VDT Blog – “Diving Right In”

Posted January 30, 2010 11:01 am by fantasia_kitty

When it was proposed (or mandated) that Skandar and co-stars Will Poulter and
Georgie Henley don a wet suit to earn their scuba PADI (Professional Association of
Diving Instructors) certificate before filming commenced on “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” the teenage trio dove right in, you might say, to yet another adventure and challenge.

The third book in C.S. Lewis’ series begins when the two youngest Pevensies, along with their irritating cousin Eustace, are swallowed into a bedroom wall painting, which depicts a ship sailing on the high seas.

To create the effect of the bedroom flooding with water, the production’s mechanical SFX crew, under the direction of veteran movie magician Brian Cox, and working with Barry Robison’s and Ian Gracie’s crack art department and construction crew, duplicated the sound stage bedroom set on an elevated platform which was then dunked into the smaller of Warner Roadshow’s two exterior studio water tanks. The three actors were then instructed to swim out of the bedroom door and windows to the surface.

Weeks before their scenes were filmed, Keynes, Poulter and Henley underwent a three-day scuba diving course under the supervision of Aussie diving instructor Andrew Allen. The actors trained in a local swimming pool and at sea.

You can say they all took to the lessons like fish to water.

After a relatively short rehearsal period in the studio tanks, filming began on the bedroom water scenes in late July, the first week of production. A short time later, the three young actors dove into a second studio tank, to enact the moments where they surface in the ocean and are saved by Caspian and his crew aboard the Dawn Treader.

General Movie Discussion | Official Movie Blog #2

NarniaFans have posted the second entry in the official production blog, though apparently its been renumbered to be the "first" blog entry for some reason. Either way, it can be found at NarniaFans, though it doesnt actually contain much if any information we didnt already know before:

Doesn't contain anything we didn't know?!

What about all those details on how the kids are getting to Narnia this time?

By the way, it doesn't seem that this is NarniaFans posting these, just that they're reposting the Facebook blog, which can be found on this fan page: http://www.facebook.com/narnia?v=app_23 ... =831925479

Yes, it is from the Facebook page. There was definitely new info there! The reason it was renumbered is because it's the first blog on a new VDT fan page; the other official fan page is for the Chronicles as a whole, while this one is just for VDT. I read the whole thing and enjoyed it.
We've been speculating about how exactly the transition from the bedroom to Narnia will happen - well, the blog made it pretty clear that the room will be filled with sea water and the kids will have to swim out. Not swim through the picture, but rather through the windows of the room... as though the room itself was transported to Narnia and dropped into the sea. I find that VERY interesting! Not even sure what to think at this point.

Salem posted a quote from a set report in the "Picture in the Bedroom" topic (just a couple threads below this one) which said pretty much the exact same thing, about 2 months ago:

Wow! I was wondering when another one of these would come out. Image Image We already did know that the bedroom gets filled with water (see icarus's post above). But there are definitely more details now. I really enjoyed reading it. It must have been so exciting to actually act out.

I don't know what happened to the picture, and I'm wondering... Image I hope that it's still there, considering that there may be a lot of other changes elsewhere. Perhaps they stare at the picture, but it won't actually swallow them up. So many possibilities.

The picture is still there, just seems that they don't get swallowed into it. I feel like the blog post is very clear that they swim through the window, and than up to the surface of the ocean.

Intriguing . . .

So they swim into Narnia through windows and such ey? I can take this departure from the book just fine personally - it was always going to be a strange one to interpret onto the screen.

The way I plan on looking at it is it's more Narnia comes through the painting rather than the children going through the painting, into Narnia - if you get my drift. So the ocean pours through the painting and engulfs 'the world', the only thing surviving intact being the room and contents (ie, the kids).

It might sound a little odd, but explaining it in my head helps justify they way they've decided to do it.
All in all, I'm quite looking forward to seeing this scene on screen, it should look amazing - the blog made out like it was pretty fun to film at any rate! Image x

I never could picture them falling into the ocean from above like in the book anyway! this is SO much better!

No hold on just a minute...
Read more carefully:

Quote:The third book in C.S.

(Emphasis Added)

The quotation clearly tells us that the book begins with the three children being swallowed into a bedroom wall painting. We can assume that the three children in the movie will be swallowed into a bedroom wall painting as well. If they weren't, then why should they even mention the way it happened in the book?

I'm guessing that the reason they specified that the "book" started this way is probably because the movie is going to start differently, perhaps at the school location that we heard about earlier. There is no reason to believe that the circumstances of how they enter Narnia will be any different.

The reason they dipped the entire set into the tank was to create the effect of water running into the room. This is a visual adaptation of what was tactile and olfactory in the book: the smell of the sea air, the feel of the sea breeze. In fact, the kids even got splashed by the picture before they entered it, didn't they?

It seems that the reason that the actors were instructed to swim through the windows and door was so that the actors could breathe! It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the plot. They weren't directed to swim out the windows in the shot, they were instructed to swim out of the room when the shot was over, presumably.

Even if the room does fill with water, we can safely assume that the children get into Narnia through the picture, -although I hope this effect isn't carried out like the BBC version, with the children shrinking and all. More than likely the room will seem to get larger and more flooded as we see it through the children's perspective. Kind of like the railway tunnel in PC. We as the audience saw the tunnel get stripped away just as the Pevencies saw it happen. Or even LWW for that matter. We as the audience entered Narnia sideways. We moved further behind rows of coats until suddenly the branch of a tree was visible. The shot didn't stay in England, watching Lucy enter, nor did it jump ahead into Narnia waiting until Lucy got there. Rather, we enter Narnia the same way Lucy enters it. From her perspective almost.

I think this is what they are trying to achieve for Dawn Treader. Stylistically it would match well.

I completely agree...It's quite tacky and I am very pleased that it does not appear that they are doing it that way...P.S. Movie Aristotle, happy birthday!

This is one scene I was worried about, I wasn't sure how they were going to go about it but it seems as if it will go just like I imagined. I am so excited for this movie and think it will blow audiences away just as LWW did. I see the room filling with water then the three being swept in through the picture from the water and then Caspian rescuing them. I am feeling very positive for this movie Image I don't care if they aren't exactly to the book, as long as they get the main story like LWW was. I am going to compare VDT to LWW Image

After reading some of the comments I am curious about how it was done in the BBC version because I haven't seen all of those... I think I'll go look into them.

Movie Aristotle, great analysis of the blog. I was panicking because it sounded like they would be going through widows and doors to get to Narnia. Now I feel much better.
~DaughterOfEve~, in the BBC's version, they shrink and sort of fly through the picture into the water. Compared to now the special effects aren't great but they did very well considering when they were making VDT and that they didn't have a lot of money. I would definitely recommend watching the BBC versions. I absolutely love them.

^^ BBC's version was really silly.....they kind of shrunk and all of them floated in one tight group and were basicly paced in the water......hardly dramatic! Image

So it IS Caspian who saves the trio from drowning. Well, I’m glad! :-) Woohoo!

    • Reepicheep The XII says:

I think Caspian’s the one who saved them in the book, too.

      • narniafan4ever ♥ says:

Yeah, this is nice to know…and I think that the bedroom filling up unstead of them getting sucked into the picture may be a better choice….cause I can see how having then sucked in the picture could look cheezy, if you know what I mean. It’s great in the book, but it would be hard to portray it on screen without it looking wierd. idk. I guess as long as they do it well, it will be great! :D Sail on, Dawn Treader!!!!

    • liz says:

just a info, if anyone hasnt the movie easy viture,it on starz early premure channel.

Yes! I cann’t wait for the first trailer

      • [ForNarniaAndForAslan] says:

THAT’S WHAT WE’RE WAITING FOR TOO!!! SO EXCITED!!! The first time we saw the PC preview was in the theater and I was actually breathless afterwards!!! CAN’T WAIT!

That was pretty detailed stuff, right there.

  • Talking Rat says:

Dunking the bedroom into the water, eh? That should be pretty cool… :)

  • Liberty Hoffman says:

    this is SO cool!
playing games under 24 feet of water, eh? that’s crazy! lol! :D

  • Shy Galadriel says:

Well, that’s a change. Instead of them getting sucked the picture, everything but the room becomes Narnia… Sounds a bit like the tunnel in PC. Except in this case the room stays and everything else changes… Weird. Not sure how I like it. Can’t wait for the movie to come out!!!!!!!

    • Lucille Brown says:

But hey, maybe this is showing an example of how the rest of the movie is different to the book. Maybe all the scene are similary changed like this one.

  • AndreyaofNarnia says:

Hmm. Well it seems that they’re staying pretty close to the book. Can’t wait for a trailer!!

    • Starlily says:

Yeah, at least it sounds like that scene will be all right. Yay, I’m excited! Yippee! Go Dawn Treader! (I don’t have time to say anything more intelligent :) )

  • narniafan#1 says:

Sounds like it’d be a lot of fun to learn to scuba dive! Nice to get a little detail too.

  • I_LiVe_iN_NarNia:P says:

Paper, scissors, rock!? Isn’t it rock, paper, scissors? :P Sounds cool though, I was wondering how they would do that bit :)

  • Narniamiss says:

Wow, very excited! This sounds really neat! I bet the kids had fun with that!

  • iLiveInNarnia says:

It sounds interesting.. Dunking the set into water. not sure how i feel about that yet. Lol. But then again, that is a hard scene to film!

  • Lady Galadriel says:

Now that we know a little of how they did it, it’s going to be especially interesting to watch the transition. Transition-scenes like the ones where England becomes Narnia are always interesting.

  • 7chronicles says:

That is so cool, I never would have thought of them going to Narnia that way, I can total picture that in the movie, Visonally I think it will look amazing, and I’m so glad that Caspian is the one who saves them just like the book!

  • Edmund-is-hot says:

    OMG
    Now I’m REALLY excited
    Aaaaaa! XD

  • InLoveWithAslan says:

    Ok. Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • NarnianElf says:

Wow that is an AWESOME idea!! This is going to be fantastic!! I am so excited.

  • Reepicheep775 says:

I like the sound of the transition. It should really freak Eustace out.

  • Aslan's my homeboy says:

wow Skandar sounds like a real daredevil ;) gotta love him. Sounds like an awesome idea though! I bet the movie will be fantastic!!!

    • HighQueenofNarnia says:

Well, of course he’s a daredevil- that’s practically his middle name. The subtitle for him in the Prince Caspian movie companion is Daredevil in Disguise- guess he’s not in disguise anymore!

      • 220chrisTian says:

Am I the only one that found this disturbing when I read it? Why a daredevil? Why fearless, in the face of possible death? I didn’t know I needed to pray for his physical safety last summer and fall! Maybe I’m wrong but this sounds to me like he’s more than just an adventurous nature-lover, like he’s seeking thrills–or death. [Does he have a death wish?] I pray God makes Skandar desire peace and safety! :(

      • Eustacegirl says:

        hes a guy

      • [ForNarniaAndForAslan] says:

Well, I don’t think Skandar has a death wish. I’m a daredevil too, and I’m a girl, and a Christian too at that! I would say let’s not go overboard, but that would be too lame of a pun. :D
All the same, I am seriously praying for his safety.

      • HighQueenofNarnia says:

No offense, 220chrisTian, but I think you might be overreacting. I think that Skandar really enjoys challenges like this, and even though it’s not the safest of environments, he’s not actually trying to kill himself. I don’t think that he wants to die- I certainly hope that he doesn’t! (That would entirely ruin HHB!) But it cannot possibly hurt to pray for his physical safety as well as his (and others’) emotional and spiritual safety.

  • LL says:

How fun!!! I’d sooo love to do that! It’d also be fun to surf the English Channel with Mr. Keynes lol!

  • pselpevensie says:

    very cool.
    *AH! SPOILERS*

  • glumPuddle says:

Interesting ideas for the transition. So the water pours out of the picture and floods the room… and the kids swim out of the windows, and then surface to see the Dawn Treader? That’s the impression I got.

    • Narniamiss says:

Same here. I’m wondering if Ed is going to have to pull Eustace out, since I’m assuming he will really freak out. Can’t wait. :D

      • HighQueenofNarnia says:

That would be really cool! It mentions in the book that the Pevensies know how to swim (even though they didn’t in PC)- they could save Eustace (not that they’d really WANT to, of course…) :) Although I can’t say that I like the idea of Lucy, Edmund, and Eustace swimming out of the bedroom- I really like the idea of them going through the picture into Narnia!

      • WillMoseleyandSkandarcrush! says:

Doesn’t it say in the book something like Lucy kicked off her shoes while Eustace foolishly flapped his arms up and down? I don’t know what I’m talking about!! :) But Ed or Lu probably does something like that. I’m so excited!!! This sounds really cool. Maybe water starts gushing out from the painting and carries the pevs and scrubb inside the painting. Anyways, who cares now, the day is comeing slowly!!! Can’t wait for it any longer. And like I said b4 in the other link, like, two links down, I said it’d b sweet if Edmund saved Lucy or something. Maybe have Lu fight for Edmund when he’s being taken to the dungeon. Remeber a while it said Edmund was in a dungeon? Perhaps that’s why Lucy has a sword. I wish Edmund or Lucy would fight back to being kept from being separated from Pug. It’d be SO sweet! Showing how brotherly and sisterly they r.

    • Griffle says:

So do you think they will still shrink in size to fit through the frame of the painting like in the book or will they have to struggle to get get through? ;)

  • Tarkheen Princess says:

    You rock, Skan!

Boy, I can’t wait till I see that movie. . .But, ofcoars, I’m being patient. :)

  • Tarkheen Princess says:

Thier room is going to FLOOD? That’s so COOL!

  • narnia365 says:

lol, wow! I love it! I can’t wait to see it… oh wow, it will be so cool!!! I can’t wait for the trailer, and then the movie! And soundtrack, and everything…

  • The Great and Fearless Pug says:

Woah! Pretty big spoiler right there! Can’t wait to see it. I think that right there is going to be the best part of the movie! Well, maybe not, but it will still be cool. :D

  • Long Live King Skandar says:

    This is awesome!!
I think its interesting that all three Narnia films to date (incl. VDT) include a significant underwater scene but this will be the first time it’s based off the book itself..

  • narniafan says:

Why is this stuff being posted on Facebook and not, oh I don’t know … narnia.com? Anyone know when that site will be up?

  • CaspianThePrince says:

The way they are sucked into Narnia is EXACTLY how I imagined it. I can’t even believe it :D
    I think I’m in love :)

  • redeemedqueen says:

This sounds really awesome! Caspian’s saving them and they did the transition to Narnia the same as in the book (I applaud their creativity with it)! SOOO EXCITED!!!

  • Mapthestars says:

It reminds me a lot of like how Michael Bay did this one shot in his movie "The Island" where a room was flooded with water. you can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwFmP0Qt-5Y go to 52 secs into the video.

  • Andrew says:

I have made a labelled diagram of the tanks at movie worlds studios, it should assist the descriptions in the blog. Check it out here – http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/6505/tanks.jpg

  • Nathan says:

Uh oh. It sounds like they’re going to make this one untrue to the book also, which means it’s not going to be successful. The movies can only be successful if they stay true to the books.

Oh boy. It sounds like this is going to be the last Narnia movie made.

I guess we’ll never see the Silver Chair.

  • Bother Eustace says:

So, it’s as if the entire room itself is transported to narnia and dunked in the sea. Wierd.

    • Griffle says:

Right! It’s really strange and it feels all wrong. I really don’t see the reason for the change. Also, I’m shocked there are so many people on here that think this is how it was in the book. Go read the book again people! I’m sure they will make it really cool and I’m sure I’ll love this scene when I see the movie, but for now though, it just feels all wrong.

  • Silver the Wanderer says:

Sounds really neat! The transitions from Earth to Narnia are pretty hard to film (I was quite happy with the train station transition in PC) so I’m excited to see how this one turns out!

  • HighQueenofNarnia says:

For some reason this story makes me laugh and laugh. I could just see them all underwater with scuba masks and English clothes on- not exactly a match! I can’t wait to hear stories about that!

  • Eliseo says:

I think I like this transition better than the book, because I just dont see them suddenly being sucked into the picture without making it look …. not very good. Beside, the essence of the book is still there; they are in the room… there is magic and all of sudden they are swimming for their lives so that Caspian can save them. Sounds good to me.

  • ~Lava~ says:

Cinematically, it is better this way, I guess. Also, a wave did break into the room so there is some basis. I hope they did not show them swimming out of the room through the windows and doors though.

  • Narniangirl says:

Ha I think reading the first bit kind of makes every girl fall a little bit in love with Skandar (where as with me it’s more lol xD) It almost sounds as if they’re bigging Skandar up(sorry for crude phrase but I can’t describe it any other way) now Will Moseley’s left, I got that impression also reading the movie companion. I just wish they’d do blogs more often and give us a trailer!

    • HighQueenofNarnia says:

I don’t really know about that, Narniangirl. I mean, if you’re a girl, you can admire a guy for being daring and not fall in love with him.
Also, I wonder what part Lucy is going to play? Everyone seems to be talking about Skandar/Edmund and a little bit of Will/Eustace but not Georgie/Lucy! Granted, the article does tend to focus on Skandar, but still. It’s not like Lucy’s character or Georgie’s to just sit there and wait to be rescued- wonder what she’s going to do?
Another question: Was Skandar 17 at the time of this shooting? Because if he was 18, why was it mandated that he take scuba lessons? He’s a legal adult.

      • HighQueenofNarnia says:

I’m not sure where the edit button is so I have to double-post- sorry! Yeah, Narniangirl, they are making much out of him- but you know who they should really be "bigging up"? Will Poulter! He’s going to be in the next couple of movies- and Skandar’s not. And the reason that they’re doing it is so every girl will swoon and every boy will be amazed and every person will go see the movie!

      • 220chrisTian says:

I assume Skandar was 17. Wasn’t this early in filming, like July? He turned 18 in September.

      • [ForNarniaAndForAslan] says:

Well, I’m glad Edmund’s character gets to do more in this film, b/c it’s the LAST film for him. If they don’t "big him up" at all, I’ll be disappointed. I was glad Peter had such an amazing role in PC (the fight with Miraz, the awesome jump over the drawbridge, etc.) b/c now we all miss him.

      • narniafan4ever ♥ says:

Yeah, we all miss him, but he is going to be in this film! At least, there was his double casted, so he must be in it. So excited!!!!!!!! :D :) ;) :P :o hee hee

  • Starlily says:

Lol, I read the blog and I realized they were calling the game Paper-Scissors-Rock. Where I come from, we call it Rock-Paper-Scissors. xD I just think its funny.
Also when I read the end of the blog, I thought they said Skandar was going to surf all the way back to England from Australia, instead of shipping only his surfboard. Oh, I’m so silly. :D

    • Lillyput90 says:

Well, where I come from it’s called Scissors, Paper, Rock:). So I guess it’s different everywhere aye!

      • [ForNarniaAndForAslan] says:

we always said "scissors, paper, stone". ;) funny. also we came up with a more complicated version involving "earth, fire, water." the earth would muddy the water, the water would put out the fire, and the fire would burn the earth. I know that’s lame…you can tell how bored we were with car trips… =) =)

      • Starlily says:

No I like that, ForNarniaAndForAslan. :) It makes about as much sense as the original version.
And it’s funny how everyone calls the "Rock-Paper-Scissors" game (or whichever name you prefer) a different way. I never even thought about it before. Guess you learn something new every day. ;)

  • Lady Galadriel says:

O.K., here’s what happens in the book. Lucy mentions to the boys that the picture is coming to life, and after they are talking about it, a wave comes through the picture INTO THE ROOM and soaks them. Then they are drawn into the picture and into the sea.

What is the big deal if the whole room floods? Would that even be a change from the book?

Since we don’t know all of the details, I don’t know if they actually get sucked through the painting. It’s one of the tricky things about a transition-scene, I suppose, because there are different ways they could do this.

I just hope the painting is still there, and chances are it’s going to be. If it’s not there, then I will be mad! But at the moment, I am much more concerned with the bell tower scene. For example, with all the changes in PC, did fans dislike the fact that a train goes by the Pevensies right before their transition?

So right now, I’m all for it. But of course I will reserve my final opinion for when I actually see it, since we’ve only got snatches of information right now.

  • ~DaughterOfEve~ says:

I have been so excited for this scene and it seems as if it will be as I exactly imagined it. I am so excited for this movie. The long wait is making me appreciate it more and more!!

    • [ForNarniaAndForAslan] says:

My brother set my cellphone up to where a calendar event comes up every week, reminding us all that it’s one week less til NARNIA comes out!!! Right now it’s 44 weeks and 4 days… at least in the USA. =) I LOVE how they’re doing it. So true to the book!

    • The Archenlander says:

Thats exactly how i imagined it too. but i thought it would all be CG….so im pumped for the real thing.

  • The Batman says:

Wow that sounds really cool! I thought that part would be all CG or something.

  • narnian resident says:

woh thats cool i never thought of the idea of the room flooding with water thats creative. i wondered how they were going to do that scene with them going through the picture and now it seems more clear. all i could imagine was wind whipping through the room and the picture getting bigger. this sounds awesome!

  • Aravis Tarkheena says:

It sounds like an awesome scene!!!!!!! I can’t wait to see it!!!! That is so cool how the bedroom is going to be flooded!!!!

  • Puddleglum says:

I’m just thinking of there being an english child’s bedroom resting on the bottom of the sea in Narnia. Salt water would wreck havoc with the furniture.
Curious how they will work out what happens when the children swim "out" of the room, what do they see once "outside"? Wood framing? Or do they just suddenly appear on the surface?
OOOH My head! Thinking of all that moving water makes my stomach swim. I need to take a walk through a nice safe swamp.

  • [ForNarniaAndForAslan] says:

Hey, wait. They’d have to do the whole thing in one take, right? I mean, the bedroom set would be ruined. Or maybe they have several bedroom sets…

  • skandarLover45 says:

Wow! I would love to scuba dive! That would be so much fun!!! I love how they get to learn new things each film. That could really help them later in life!

  • Jill Pole says:

How can scuba diving help them later in life? Last time I checked there where laws about making kids under 18 perform dangerous stunts. Skandar is that old, but I know for a fact that the other two aren’t. Get a grip.

    • Lillyput90 says:

Scuba is cool! I would sooooo love to learn how to Scuba and if I was in Australia where all the cool reefs are, I would learn it too! Legally persons over the age of 12 can learn scuba, and if it was me, the company asks me to learn scuba for a movie, I would jump (probably backwards off a boat I guess) at the opportunity:)

      • Jill Pole says:

Really? Are you serious? Can’t people be arrested for things like underage stunting?

      • HighQueenofNarnia says:

Yes, they can. However, learning to scuba dive was a safety precaution so the actors wouldn’t drown and could stay safely underwater for long periods of time. Notice that the article said that Will, Skandar, and Georgie were "mandated" to learn (e.g., so that they would be safe). The production was looking out for their safety. Scuba diving, in this case, is not a stunt- it’s merely a precaution. A stunt is, according to my understanding, an action by an actor which appears in the production. You know, like when Will M. jumps up on his galloping horse during the castle raid in PC, or when Anna falls off Aslan’s How during the battle, or when Skandar slips off the castle wall to be "caught" by a Gryphon, or when Georgie steps on that fragile, thin piece of ground and falls a little way down the gorge. I guarantee you, that unless the production decides to really mess up the movie, you will not see the actors with scuba masks on! And I’m not sure on this, but I think that the actors are in compliance with the UK and Australian laws on scuba diving. If what Lillyput90 says is true, then they are within the law. It’s not like Arabella was doing it. Although that would be cute! :)
Probably Georgie’s and Will’s parents had to sign some type of permission slip to allow them to do that though. If Skandar was 17 at the time then his parents might have had to as well.

      • Hermitess of Narnia says:

I heard on a video, (I don’t know if this is completely accurate) that all schoolchildren in England have to be able to swim a certain number of yards.

This is going to be so much fun! Aunt Alberta Scrubb will really ground them after this!

      • Jill Pole says:

I’m not talking about them having scuba gear in the actual movie, I’m talking about the legality of the thing. That’s what stunt doubles are for!

    • Queen Emily of Narnia!! says:

there’s nothing wrong with scuba-diving and anyway if you want this film to turn out good maybe it’s a good thing they do these stunts and anyway i’m sure there’s safety!

      • skandarLover45 says:

Jill Pole you need to get a grip obviously it’s just preparing them for the underwater scene. never are they actually going to go scuba diving in the movie. their agents/parents/them have signed contracts with a scuba diving trainer to teach them how to stay underwater for a long time. RELAX!!

      • Jill Pole says:

I’m not an idiot I know what I’m talking about. I know that they aren’t actually going to scuba dive in the movie, I’m just saying what are their stunt doubles there for anyway?

      • HighQueenofNarnia says:

If the actual actors (Georgie, Will and Skandar) are coming to the surface in the movie, then they will need scuba training. Teaching doubles to scuba dive but not the actors would be a waste of time. And maybe production wants an underwater closeup. Anyway, I think that it’s legal and I hope that it contributes to the success of the movie!

  • aslan's child says:

    coollllll!!!!!!!cant wait to see it!!!

  • Queen Emily of Narnia!! says:

I’m so glad that te’re keeping to the book and the’re obviously taking it really seriously to take diving lessons and everything! It’s going to be really great and i can’t wait!please comment!!!;)

  • WarriorQueen says:

Oh, that was fun to read!

  • Baraslan says:

Here’s how I picture this. In the book, it describes the painting as looking like it’s becoming more and more life-like, to the point where the waves begin to move and water actually splashes out of the painting. In the described movie transition, I’m picturing that the picture on teh wall transforms into a ‘picture-framed’ porthole of sorts as the whole bedroom is transported to Narnia. SO the painting of the Dawn Treader on the ocean, becomes the real Dawn Treader and the kids are looking through the rooms ‘porthole’ (previously a painting) out into the ocean where the Dawn Treader is sailing. The bedroom, obviously not designed to work as a sailing vessel, immediately begins to sink, causing water to pour in through any open areas (windows, cracks around door, and of course, the painting/porthole itself, eventually). The kids escape the bedroom and are rescued by the crew of the Dawn Treader that they were just looking at through the ‘porthole’ in their (now sunken) bedroom.

  • HighQueenofNarnia says:

I don’t know if I like the "swimming out of windows" bit. I always imagined this scene as this: the waves start to move, the ship starts to go up and down. Eustace freaks and tries to break the picture, while the Pevensies try to stop him. They all get really close to the picture, which has been getting bigger. Suddenly they’re not standing on a floor anymore (it disappears), they’re standing on a giant size picture frame, with waves lapping up and pouring through. They try to steady themselves. Just then, a big wave comes up and sweeps them off the picture frame, which also vanishes. However, you don’t know that until Eustace starts whining about wanting to get back, which is the scene after Caspian helping Lucy, Edmund and Eustace into the ship. Then, when Eustace looks back, nothing is there. It’s simply vanished, which is an unnerving experience for Eustace. Then you continue with the story. I just described what’s in the book- it’s actually not that hard to put on screen, with clever camera angles and special effects.

  • Mal says:

Wow… I am SO EXCITED FOR THIS! I mean, learning about what the ship looks like and seeing pictures of the actors is good, but hearing about what’s going to happen is AWESOME! Sail on VDT.
