Netflix Film Chief Looks “Beyond 2021,” Mentions Narnia

In Netflix’s recently released slate of films for 2021, The Chronicles of Narnia was nowhere to be seen. However, in an interview with The New York Times, Netflix’s Head of Original Films spoke about projects beyond 2021 and mentioned Narnia:

Mr. Stuber said he was encouraged that “the quality of the filmmaking continues to grow” on Netflix but would like to increase the company’s focus on big-budget action films. He sees Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead” as one example of that this year, but is also looking beyond 2021 to movies like “The Gray Man,” starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, from Joe and Anthony Russo (“The Avengers”) and a new adaptation of “The Chronicles of Narnia.”

This interview snippet follows a recent update from Narnia producer Mark Gordon, who stated that Narnia films and television series were still in the works at Netflix. As of now, we have no word on when the upcoming Narnia adaptation will be released. Here’s everything we know about Netflix’s Narnia.

How do you feel about Netflix’s upcoming Narnia adaptation being listed among big-budget action films? Share your thoughts in the comments below or the discussion forums.

Still over 365 days until it comes!
Seriously though, it’s good to see it getting mentioned this frequently by the folks at Netflix- I think we can take this as a pretty good indicator that Narnia was not simply bought as a speculation and then forgotten about. Aslan is on the move!… albeit rather slowly….

We have been assuming (or at least I have) that Covid has postponed production of Narnia, but I’m starting to question if that’s actually the case. The only thing that would have likely been postponed is filming, and I don’t think they’re that far along as we’ve heard nothing. In the meantime they can certainly write scripts, storyboard, cast people, and do all sorts of other preproduction planning. Possibly even as far as start to put together props and costumes.
I’m thinking that filming later this year and a release in 2022 is not impossible. It even seems to be loosely implied here.

    “I call all times soon.”

I’m a “patterns” person: Concerning Narnia (specifically Wardrobe), Walden’s Wardrobe was released 17 years after BBC’s Wardrobe. I’m hoping Netflix’s Wardrobe will be released 17 years later in 2022. 😉

    BBC ‘88
    Walden ‘05
    Netflix ‘22

That’s assuming they do Nephew & Wardrobe at the same time, or they just do publication order. 😉

Thinking the same thing. I’m wondering if they’ve got their eye on a December 2022 release…

  6. Keeper of Lantern Waste says:

From the business perspective, it will be very interesting to see which order they choose. Personally I’m betting chronological because publication might not produce enough interest with no new stories until after VDT.

10,000 years later, bunch of business bs, many have given up hope, I only have a little, I waited 10 years and forgot about it for several cause I have a life but this is just sad, should’ve filmed all 7 books YEARS AGO, at least BBC filmed 4, they didn’t wait a freakin decade to film a movie that takes place after VDT, it’s pretty sad when Eustace is almost 30

  8. Dianne Reif says:

Please produce NARNIA series as soon as possible. Everyone wants this.

  9. Andy Harrelson says:

Patience is a virtue, I sure hope it’s worth the wait!

Very nice! I like that. 🙂

I agree. And if they know any Narnia fans at all – and I sure hope they do – they’ll understand that MN ranks high on most people’s lists. It would make a lot of sense for them to start with MN, because it would get serious fans (like us) excited, and get casual fans (like my family) curious. I absolutely love LWW, but if I were trying to generate new interest in Narnia I would go with MN.

To answer the main question though, I knew Netflix would not forget Narnia. On another show of theirs, “Locke & Key” they made several (hilarious IMO) Narnia references. More importantly, they shelled out a ridiculous amount of money – I’m no business savvy entrepreneur type, but common sense says you invest that much in something you gotta use it. 🙂

Netflix’s Narnia has nothing to do with the movie trilogy

  13. Michael says:

Thank God, I hope they follow through

I still can’t believe the other stuff though, they just had to cut The Silver Chair, it is such a bad *** story! It’s just awesome! A whole new part of Narnia and new characters, and it was the last of the original Pevensies as kids, technically it’s just Eustace and he’s a Scrubb but still he’s family and was a kid still in The Silver Chair, I can’t believe how dysfunctional and uncooperative the film industry is these days, I wish Walt Disney was alive, he’d film all 7 easily. I hope Netflix does The Silver Chair and not some PC joke or too far from the book, I’m trying not to be bitter but they really need to do this, The Silver Chair, it doesn’t matter in which order anymore cause it’s a new cast now, and all 7, I’d love all 7 books as movies and possibly the shows as spin offs

  15. Vedica says:

Besides eagerly waiting for Netflix’s Narnia, I’m hoping they don’t change the actors who played the Pevensie siblings characters 🙁 And they also take the fimls forward gracefully. Because I’m a big fan of the 3 Narnian films. I hope they don’t ruin it. The story, the peace, the magic, the characters, and the actors.

  16. Aslan Return says:

I agree with you 100%. In truth it is a small chance, but it is always good to have hope.

  17. Matt says:

In my view if money is no object they should script all the films/series before they start.

Some of the children aren’t meant to age much between stories, so ideally you would film some of them back to back so the actors ages remain appropriate for their characters.

  18. Cat says:

    I definitely agree.
If I were them I’d be filming most of LWW, except for the older Kings and Queens, then PC, then VDT (with makeup or whatever to make Caspian look older), then SC, then LB, then MN, then finish off LWW and do HHB (if the actors/actresses weren’t as old as they needed to, use makeup or something like is used in the Deathly Hallows Epilogue). Then I would release them in chronological order, perhaps with HHB after LWW. And be very clear with everyone along the way what was happening. And release pictures of all the cast along the way.
But that’s just me. I wouldn’t mind even if they released MN before the rest were all filmed, just have as close to proper aged kids for each film.
While they’re at it, they really need to find a fair-haired Lucy again. 🙂 And swap Ed and Peter’s hair back to book colour. And cut the senseless unbook battle scenes. We’ve got Disney’s one of that now, we don’t need another.

  19. Cat says:

    Definitely…!

  20. Cat says:

The Silver Chair is arguably the best or closest to the best book in the series – how could they think of not doing it? A story of human failure and redemption, with a strong *heroine*, what’s not to love in today’s society?

  21. Cat says:

I wish! I’d almost get Netflix just to see one film/series. Which is pretty impressive.

  22. Jacqueline says:

As far as I am concerned,I hope that it is better to produce The Silver Chair as fast as possible.Since I just hope that the rest of Narnia movies could be accomplished at speed so as to make the great masterpeceice have a complete ending rather than a totally alternative series from the first book to the last one of narnia story is produced. Those former three movies have taken irreplaceable position in my mind, and I also wish to see the actors and actress of Pevensies again in the last battle, that would be wonderful.

Referring to The Silver Chair, perhaps it is a novel start of journey of the story to some extent(new characters join in, the difficulty of presenting a new movie that is able to deeply rooted in the audience’s mind after several years since Dawn Treader and without disparity with previous ones ), but I reckon that the consistency with the content and theme of original book really does matters(by the way , movies made by BBC did a good jobs at the point),which means new ideas are appreciated ,but the theme and motif in book are something really valuable, accompanying with adjust in the weak points in book.
