7 New Set Videos: Eustace in Action

NarniaWeb Spy Tamara is at it again, posting seven new videos from the Dawn Treader set, including one with Eustace swinging something around, and another (embeded below) where he is crying much harder than any boy of his age has a right to cry when nothing worse than a wetting has happened to him. Listen carefully and you might be able to make out some of the dialogue:

It makes sense. Both "Get me to a British Council!" and "Get me of this ship RIGHT NOW!!!" And the video where Eustace is swinging something might be Eustace and Reepicheep fighting. I mean, he's swinging at nothing because Reep is animated. And they do get into a fight. I have nothing else to say… OH! one more thing: SKANDAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! okay, i'm good.

I think Eustace might be one of my favorite characters from the movies…Poulter's acting looks entertaining and genuine.
Lewis certainly did a better job with fleshing Eustace out than a few other main characters from the series, so they have a lot of good material to work with.
I would not say "better job" as if Lewis did something wrong by creating simplistic characters. In Narnia, simplicity (or innocence) is often associated with good, while evil is often more complex. Eustace is all about facts and reason (annoyingly so), and Lewis didn't seem to look on that kind of character very favorably.
Perhaps not a "better" job, but it seems to me that Lewis did more characterizing as the books progressed. Eustace showed a great deal of change and growing up throughout VDT and SC. He's a funny character, for his obnoxiousness (which was never portrayed favorably), but he did grow past it. Other characters, such as Peter (who I'm still a fan of) or Susan, were basically the same throughout the series.
Though I won't call Eustace an "autobiographical" character, he's a lot like Lewis was before his conversion to Christianity. After his conversion, Lewis grew to dislike his former analytical self and the system that birthed it.
"Basically the same"? Perhaps their change isn't as dramatic as Eustace, but Peter at least does change and learn things. He learns about forgiveness and leadership in LWW (he's too hard on Edmund in the beginning, by his own admission.) In PC, he learns another lesson about leadership: To trust Aslan rather than himself (the first thing he says when he meets Aslan in PC is "I'm sorry, I've been leading them wrong all along). Eustace' arc is just more clearly defined while the other characters' arcs are more subtle. That's all.
Susan, on the other hand, doesn't change very much, and so it shouldn't come as a big surprise when she stops believing in Narnia in LB. She apparently didn't mature very much from her time spent in Narnia.
I think Lewis put something of himself in all the characters. But if I had to pick one character most like Lewis, I would say Caspian. That character is almost autobiographical of Lewis' conversion. For years, Lewis was an atheist and believed the Bible was full of untrue myths… Caspian mirrors the excitement Lewis felt when he discovered that the myth was real! The myth became fact. Crucial idea in the series…One that they touched on in the PC movie, but not very powerfully.
You think about this a lot, don't you, gp? 🙂 well, anyway, I really like you're train of thought here, about CSLEWIS relating to CASPIAN
interesting, glumpuddle. i like how you explain and think it out. and i've always had a sort of respect to eustace's character, because he starts out as a nuisance and with a bad attitude, but through VDT the adventure sort of "smooths him out", if you know what i mean. he softens and begins to discover love and happiness and trust that was not there before. he didnt even trust his own cousins in the beginning, but he grows a relationship with them.
I bet it is eather when he first gets on bord or when attacks repiecheep (forgive me if I spelled it wrong:) and reep jabed him with the sword. But very good acting!

Yeah that's what I was thinking it was when I saw him like swinging his arms around. I would guess that it is the scene where Eustace swings Reep around…. Poor Reep
Good ideas. Mine was Eustace actually does accidently get himself into a duel with Reep, and he's just swinging his sword round and round, but yours makes more scence.

Wow! Awesome! This all looks so cool! Wow with Will yelling he looked either really angry or scared or maybe both. I think he said, "Get me off this ship NOW!" He must have been yelling loud to be able to hear it over all the background noise. Man, he's awesome. And I don't why but I thought when Gary hit the deck in bang video was funny and I think Eustace was swinging around Reepicheep. Poor Reepicheep. I'd about kill Eustace for swinging me around by the tail if I was a mouse. Anyway awesome videos! THANK YOU, TAMARA!!! 😀 🙂

Oh no, I hope not! That was one of the funny things I liked about Eustace! Plus, it would just be weird to see him wielding a sword in VotDT. Just wouldn't fit in my image of the character. 😉

Maybe in the movie Eustace sees Reep, and for defence, picks up a sword an d swings it wildly??? Man, Will Poulter is such an awesome actor! I can't wait to see him in VotDT. For some reason, I can't look at this vid (ARG!) but I can picture Eustace looking a mixture of scared and angry and yelling "Get me of this ship NOW!"

so Ben is back onset Wednesday. seems like he took 2 days off (Mon and Tue) since Kerrie's blog site didnt show anything significant during those two days. Tamara and other vid spies didnt seem to show anything either. but at least Ben is now able to interact with the fans. they've been waiting a long time for that. he missed the schoolkids with their field trip to the set last friday though, he probably would've loved talking to them and asking if they've read the books yet.
now the for the videos:
vid#1= that looks to be Eustace vs Reep! 😀 he looks like he's trying to whack something lower than him and who else could it be? nice!
vid#2= Skandar on deck with a stick! watch out people! lol! nice to see Gary Sweet interacting with some of the main cast for a change. i dont think they were shooting anything at this point, just rehearsing i think, because the director had them remove the stairs to prep for the actual shoot.
vid#3= now they shoot! what did Skandar say? this is an Edmund scene since the camera was only focused on him. seems like the Dawn Treader is under attack again or something, Drinian fell to the deck. Edmund looks either panicked or exhilarated. could this be related to the Dragon attack?
vid#4= it is truly remarkable how they are able shift something as delicate and as heavy as the Dawn Treader like its nothing, that is one remarkable piece of machinery under there 🙂
vid#5= Ben looks….ticked off? (any lip readers here?) he is either miffed about something– judging by the scowling/ eye-rolling/ defensive body language– or he's telling a story in a really animated manner (he is an actor after all). makes me kinda wonder if its anything VDT related or if some other experience (like his insane Toronto schedule!) the only thing i can make out is about halfway through he says "Oh, thats not fair" to the lady he's talking to, which led me to wonder if there is trouble in Narnia paradise.
vid#6= Will getting hosed down! 😀 judging by his "Earth" costume, this is for when Eustace is rescued from the waters.
vid#7= and it is indeed! boy is Eustace upset. and the crew just laughs at his face. LMAO! i hope that take is a keeper, Will was very good in that scene, hilarious and thoroughly convincing! i can only make out "What?! <mumble, mumble, mumble>…. right now!!!" is this the British Consulate scene? i hope they can include that line somewhere.
Ha, I couldn't quite figure out what Drinian was doing in video 3! As I always say, I can't wait until the movie comes out and we can see all these scenes in their entirety rather than little clips. It will be sooo cool to know that I got to see it in its filming. Thank you Tamara for the videos!
the first video(eustace swinging something) looks like eustace was challeged to a duel by a minotaur
actually maybe the minotaur was just watching or something because he turns around and starts swinging in a different direction- maybe thats him dueling reepicheep
I agree with you Princess Arya. I thought this was a nice way for people to state there thoguhts and feelings on Narnia matters, I really think we should get back to JUST doing that and nothing else. And Tell It Like It Is, the reason we are offended is because we do have a life don't appreatite rude and insulting things.

In the Drinian one, Skandar is saying after Drinian falls, he says to the camera, "that's brilliant!" Not sure why, though. I love Eustace's tantrum! Can't wait to see that scene. Wow Tamara, thanks so much for staying on top with all this, it's so much fun seeing these videos!

How do you manage to hear that stuff? I turned up my volume, tried lip-syncing, tried to block out all the other noise, but didn't succeed!

*sigh* Where's a ban button when you need one? In more relevant news, I've begun to get VERY excited about this movie. Very very excited. Excited enough to read the book all over again two days before it comes out so I can be hyper-critical, LOL. If it's better than Prince Caspian (even without Will Moseley *sad sigh*) then I will be satisfied.

My dad went to the set around lunchtime yesterday and he got to go on the Dawn Treader – he says the detail on the boat is amazing! Sadly, he wasn't allowed to take pictures 😉

Hmm…. if you listen closely in vid # 3, you can hear Skandar saying something… and what about Drinian falling? was he shot with an arrow or something, or was the ship supposed to pitch violently and Drianian falls down…. *gulps* I hope that the production isn't taking too much creatuve freedom.
But on the other hand, Skandar looks (and sounds) wonderful, and so does Ben, and I must say that Will Poulter looks and sounds just like how I imagined Eustace to be! 🙂

I was thinking that, but then, on the other hand, he doesn't appear to be swinging a mouse by its tail…. Sharper and quicker arm movements and all.
no it seems like Eustace was swinging something *at* Reep instead of *swinging* Reep. judging by Will's body movements he's swinging a stick/ sword at Reep but Reep is just moving too fast and taking quick shots at Eustace. Eustace seems terrified, panicked and trying his darndest best to defend himself even if he stands no chance 😀

you know i love to watch the camera and where its going and whats its filming so i can sort of picture in my head what it would look like in the movie version. its fun, and it stretches your imagination!

I agree with all of you that Will polter did great, but there was one scene that some of you talked about and htat was " dirian reacting to 'boom'" which was my presonal favorite because it showed great close ups on Ben and Skandar. I wonder if Tamara will get any videos of Georgie Henley?

Well from what I can see & hear, on the 3rd clip with Caspian, Edmund and Drinian, after the bang when Caspian helps Drinian up, Edmund yells, "Caspian, I see it!"
actually im pretty sure he called out Lucy's name, and it sounds like he's saying, "Lucy, can you see it?" you have to listen really closely, but i dont think anyone knows for sure.
Ben Barnes to the women in the crew: "I could be back home in London now and pick up chicks… Instead I must be here and make this damn movie day in and day out!" "Anyway… Do any of you two have boyfriends?" 😉
