On the Box Interviews Will Poulter

Onthebox.com interviewed Will Poulter for his role in School of Comedy which will come out on DVD in the UK next month. Of course, while chatting with Will, they asked a few questions about The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

You’re filming The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader in Australia at the moment, how’s that going?

Its really good fun thank you, I’m really enjoying myself but I am missing home quite a bit, especially my family and friends. Although I will be sad to leave I will be really pleased to be home for Christmas.

Your character, Eustace Scrubb, isn’t very well behaved and of course you played the ‘most badly behaved kid in school’ in Son of Rambow. How do you keep getting these type of roles?

I know, I would really like to play a nice character for once! I feel quite bad about having to play those characters and I hope there is no one like Eustace Scrubb!

The famous introduction in the book by CS Lewis is: “There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it.” Would you say that’s a fair evaluation of your character?

Absolutely. He is a complete brat, he’s obnoxious, rude, selfish and cowardly and has no respect for anyone other than himself. However he does become a much better adjusted person at the end of the book.

They definitely plan on making the Silver Chair, so it looks like Will Poulter will get his wish! You're very right, though, about Eustace's transformation. It would be so much more believeable to see him making an effort to be better and having occasional slip-ups, which is how C.S. Lewis depicted it, than to have a complete turnaround right after his transformation.

Finally, positive news for Book Purists coming from an insider to the DT camp. I rejoiced in this statement about Eustace's character.

  3. Fire Fairy says:

That sounds promising. Who knows, maybe Georgie will have an influence on his language. 😉

  4. Fire Fairy says:

It's been said that Michael Apted connects with the character of Eustace and understands him in the same way that Andrew Adamson understood Lucy.

  5. Fire Fairy says:

    You know you're a Narnia nut when… [I don't think I even need to say it]… 😉

  6. Long Live King Skandar says:

Oh yeah, Fire Fairy 🙂 Like Georgie in LWW, like they said in the DVD commentary. The potty bucket or something, and Will Moseley and Skandar had to pay up for every time she heard them swear. haha so funny. Sigh i feel so much better about everything now..i think its safe to say that they've gotten Eustace's part just right. He's one of the key players in this story, so its crucial that they show how much he's come around by the end of the adventure

  7. Fire Fairy says:

I think it's rather funny that we Narnia nuts analyze every little thing the actors/moviemakers say about or say something somewhat related to VDT. "At" vs. "by"… Does that mean they changed the plot???? (Don't worry. I do the same thing ;-))

  8. Long Live King Skandar says:

Oh my gosh i meant potty mouth bucket…i dont exactly remember what they called it now. Man that was embarrassing I mean potty MOUTH bucket..oops

  11. narniafan4ever ♥ says:

haha….yeah. 😀 It is so far away!!!!!!!!

  12. narniafan4ever ♥ says:

And the funny thing is, it seems as though the people who play mean characters are really the nicest people in real life….lol Interesting…….. 😐

  13. Peepicheep says:

    I can't until I see it!!!!!!!! 😀

  14. Anna's Sister says:

Of course we count the trailer! 🙂

  15. Anna's Sister says:

I can't believe Will is sixteen!! Further up and further in.

  16. CoriaKing says:

Finally! I'm glad he knows his character well. I think Georgie Henley(or however you spell it) hadn't even read Prince Caspian when she acted for the movie!

  17. Duffleglum says:

    Almost a year!!!
once it does reach a year, everything will speed up – spoilers, trailers, graduation, summer, and then….
    *woooot!*

  19. Princess Arya says:

If this is just a rumor (I read it on the Internet I think so I'm not sure how reliable it is) I don't know, but wasn't there a behind-the-scenes feature when Georgie asked Andrew Adamson, "Now, this is the train station fight scene from the book, right?"

  20. He sounds like a nice boy. He feels bad about playing a bad character… lol.

  21. 220chrisTian says:

LWW filming and the potty mouth bucket: Will and Skandar swore?! They were teenagers! [17 and 13, respectively] I thought Georgie was referring to the crew and older cast members.

  22. Fire Fairy says:

I think in LWW's audio commentary Will and Skandar admitted that they had to contribute several dollars to the potty mouth bucket. (Besides, Georgie was 8-9 years old. They probably had to contribute for much more than just swearing).

  23. Fire Fairy says:

Oops! Talk about embarrassing! I really hope she's read VDT!!

  24. aslanschild says:

did that have any thing to do with a poster of the traveling… something?

  25. Yeah, it does sound like he's really gotten into his part and I am curious as well to see how he turns out. I'm also curious to see how bad he's going to be, and how he will do it. After all, I never really have seen him in action. well, you know what I mean, in " show biz".

  26. Edson07 says:

This is amazing, i love will so much. He is a great actor and he understands the rol very well…

  27. Edson07 says:

    GREAT, AMAZING

  28. NarniaPinoy says:

I agree Fire Fairy, very well said 🙂

  29. Starlily says:

    Lol!

  30. Starlily says:

Indeed. I'm glad C. S. Lewis put that in, that becoming "good" is a slow but steady process, not a "poof and it's done" thing.

  31. narnia fan7 says:

    a good intervew will

  32. Hannah the Manticore says:

It probably doesn't mean anything. More than likely, William is a smart kid, and he wishes to sound like a smart kid.

  33. ChristProclamer says:

For LWW, Tilda Swinton hadn't read the book, either. And none of the actors, as far as I can see, is really fluent in NarnianVerse.
"So, did you make up the fox, Andrew?"
"Wasn't the waterfall scene in the book, Andrew?"

  34. ChristProclamer says:

Ha ha. During LWW production, the PottyMouth Bucket I think was mostly a way for Georgie to get away with heckling money out of anybody for anything–be it Skandar saying 'Blighter', Will's cellphone having a bad ringtone, or James blurting out expletives because his nose was falling off. Some of it was innocent, some of it wasn't (Skandar said he spent 'half my wages' on it), but none of it ended up in the blooper reel–nor anywhere else, as far as I know.
