VDT to Open Against Another Movie: The Tourist

Sony Pictures announced today that they will open The Tourist, a romantic thriller starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, on Dec. 10 — the same day The Voyage of the Dawn Treader opens in theaters in the USA. The Fighter, starring Christian Bale, Mark Wahlberg, and Amy Adams opens the same day. The full press release is available here.

I don't think they are going to be aimed at the same market, so it's not as bad as it sounds.

  2. LL says:

    Both sound quite uninteresting.

  3. narnian resident says:

ugh, i could care less about those movies. why oh why do they have to do this to Narnia, its quite rude in my opinion. PC had to put up a fight, and now VDT. how rude.

  4. QueenLucy12 says:

Yes NarnianResident! They are very rude to Narnia!!!
But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why???????????????????????????????????????? We Had that Day First!!!!!!!!!! Everybody has to get alot of movies out right before my bday, huh!? but i'll only be seeing Narnia on that date! 10-12th is NARNIA'S People!

  5. Voyage is a family film. Kids, teens, parents will all come to see it. The Tourist and the Boxer are more oriented for adults.

  6. NextJillPole says:

They aren't in the same genre. We would have a MAJOR problem if Harry Potter and Narnia came out on the same day, or Twilight or something……………

  7. Yeah, the Tourist isn't much of a big deal, nor is the Fighter, excepting the actors. It's only guys & adults who are going to watch those movies during the Christmas season. What family-get-together group is going to watch those movies with kids when there are going to be plenty of other family movies (most especially Narnia)? The ones that we really have to worry about are Harry Potter (grrr), Tron Legacy (I bet it's going to get a negative critical response), Tangled (the new Disney Rapunzel movie) & Yogi Bear (I saw the trailer, & the acting & animation was lame & it's as unfunny as Marmaduke & Cats & Dogs 2). I don't think we have to worry about Twilight since it was in theaters 2 months ago! Support VDT! BTW, I won't be able to see VDT till after Dec. 15, coz of school. 🙁 *SAD*

  8. Bookwyrm says:

Rude? Dearie, we don't live in a magic universe where everyone bows down and worships at the feet of the Narnia fan. People are going to release their movies when they see fit and I rather doubt they're doing it to pick the Narnia franchise.

  9. Bookwyrm says:

If this were a superhero movie or something of the like, I'd be worried. But the description of that movie screams R-rated, so I doubt it will do VDT any harm.

  10. Pepper Darcy says:

yeah, I think VotDT is rather safe right now. I've seen lots of advertising *way* before where as with PC we saw a lot less media etc. (i.e. we saw a narnia poster last week when we went to see Toy Story 3). It's being advertised! 🙂 It'll have an audience, even Mom is *supper* hyped about this movie, and we're taking a bunch of friends to see it. Plus I'll probably see it twice (in 3D) 🙂 So, no sweat? 🙂

  11. Not Of This World says:

    Yeah! We can take 'um!

  12. Alas, 'tis true; Bookwyrm has said it rightly. One might as well be a fan of *those* movies and detest "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" for "daring" to open on *their* weekend. 🙂

  13. Knight of the Lion says:

I don't think either of those movies will be any competition for VDT. I mean, its a family film and is it just me or does the The Tourist or The Fighter sound very kid friendly to you?

  14. Aslanisthebest says:

If something like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, or any related genre was being released at the similar time, then it'd be time to worry. Likely, a family wanting to go to the movies would pick VDT over a romantic thriller… so no need to get worried unecessarily. :/

  15. Lucy says:

No biggie. No parents are going to take their kids to watch a "Thriller" no matter WHO happens to be staring in it; but parents will watch VDT with their kids. We're good, darlings, no stress, no stress.

  16. williammoseleyfanandskandarcrush/1 says:

Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie are pretty big celebrities… this isn't too good 4 VOTDT

  17. SparkyTheHappyGiraffe says:

    Yes! Very rude!

  18. for narnia and the north says:

You know, Narnia's release date was announced a long time ago, after many delays and changes. Both the Tourist and the Fighter, if I'm not mistaken, had release dates announced recently. So I think that there's a possibility that the dates will change, even though that chance gets smaller as we approach Dec. 10 (!!!)
And this is kind of random, but those two movies have such boring titles. Not EXCITING like the VOYAGE of the DAWN TREADER! just sayin'

  19. aravis tarkeena says:

I have no worry's about those films. The problems are Tangled,Harry Potter, and Tron. We REALLY have a problem with those films because they are major competion.

  20. Narnian Meerkat says:

Ooooo Jhonny Depp. I like Jhonny Depp.

  21. TigerPole says:

Well, (says with nose turned up, JK :-)) we were there first!

  22. TigerPole says:

    Hehehehe!! SO right!

  23. LucyTheValiant says:

i think if we all stay faithful and go to see VDT we won't have much to worry about 🙂
    Sail on VDT

  24. It's spelt Johnny Depp, not Jhonny Depp. Sorry, just wanted to let you know! In order for VDT to have the highest box-office the opening week, etc everybody (if they can) MUST see it in 3D, just for the first week. Something like that. Anyways, no worries. For now.

  25. Sonny says:

Why in 3D? How is that going to help? Is it more expensive?

(This coming from a guy who has only been to the movies twice in his life.)

  26. Pepper Darcy says:

Yeah, three or four dollars more expensive, depends on where you live or what theater you go to.

  27. QueenLucy12 says:

uh sorry guys i see now that i guess i dont need to worry about it much! 😀

  28. HighQueenofNarnia says:

I wouldn't dream of seeing this movie (my parents wouldn't let me anyway). Especially on VotDT weekend! I have promised and I will promise again: I will NOT see ANY OTHER FILM on VotDT's opening weekend (December 10th-12th) except VotDT!!
Just the fact that my parents wouldn't let me see it tells me that there's not much to worry about, because, as has been stated numerous times above, it's a different genre, targeted at a different audience. The only thing that gave me some anxiety at first was that the actor and actress starring are BIG name Hollywood people. But I've calmed down. 🙂

  29. HighQueenofNarnia says:

    Ditto to everything!

  30. GlimGlum says:

Something had to open against VDT. 😀

The Dawn Treader will leave The Tourist in its wake. 🙂
Reep and crew will come out ahead in the long run and holidays favor family movies more.

    Sail on VDT! 🙂

  31. FriendOfNarnia2 says:

Honestly a movie like this could actually help VDT. It's not uncommon for two movies with different demographics to help each other out.

  32. narnian resident says:

of course, i understand that Narnia isnt any more important than the other movies (well, it is to me, but anyway), i wasnt really serious about it being rude. i just say its rude cuz its rude to me (because i am a big narnia fan and it just always bothers me when movies compete on the same day, not just Narnia). i didnt mean for anyone to take it seriously. just a silly comment. probably rude of me towards them, i suppose.

  33. JadistarkilleR says:

true, both the Tourist and the Fighter are Oscar bait (those kinds of films) so they would actually be competing against each other than with Narnia. biggest threat to VDT is still TRON and that bows the following weekend. the marketing will be crucial at that point because TRON– although a scifi film against Narnia's fantasy– can take the wind out of VDT's sails. i remember LWW having a similar predicament but clever follow-up marketing and word of mouth got the tides to go on LWW's favor.

the studio has to be real crafty with the entire movie's run, not just opening weekend. i'm hoping 20th Century Fox can deliver the boost to VDT when needed.

  34. Narnian Geek says:

    I wish we did!:)

  35. Alambil and Tarvis says:

Those two movies are going to be aimed at completely different audiences; besides, VDT is going to attract repeat viewers most definitely.

The only real competition I see is Tron: Legacy, and even then I don't think it's going to kill VDT. They'll be neck-and-neck, but I don't see Tron destroying it.

  36. Tauriel says:

Oh, grow up. Narnia doesn't "own" any date. If you take the number of films that are made nowadays, you'll ALWAYS have overlapping premieres.

  37. Ranger says:

    Romantic thriller? Booooring.

  38. High Queene ShellyBelly says:

    well they should!! ha

  39. Saerwen says:

I agree! 🙂 That would be lovely. 🙂

  40. Saerwen says:

Angelina Jolie, oh GAG me. I wish it wasn'tcoming out at the same tim!

  41. Saerwen says:

    Time I ment time!!!

  42. Saerwen says:

Oh drat, I don't want to see it in 3D but if it will help, I will sacrafice *dramatic sigh* 🙂

  43. Reepicheep says:

Relax. There is and will be a lot more hype surrounding VDT than the two movies competing against it, meaning more money to be made. However, in Australia, Dreamworks' Megamind is opening on the same day as VDT. It will likely kill that as well.
