Critics Praise McAvoy in Fox’s ‘X-Men’ Prequel

20th Century Fox’s X-Men: First Class hit theaters on Friday and grossed $56m in the United States in its opening weekend. The film features James McAvoy (Tumnus) as a young Professor Xavier, who was played by Patrick Stewart in the previous films. Most reviewers have praised McAvoy’s performance. Entertainment Weekly writes: “McAvoy and Fassbender are a casting triumph. These two have, yes, real star magnetism, both individually and together.” Watch a clip.

Decent movie. McAvoy as Xavier and Fassbender as Magneto were the best part.

Well, I can't say that I imagined James to be in a movie quite like that. So, technical and pretty scary. I think he's a good actor. But like Ben, I don't think James will ever be in a film that I personally could watch. There's a shot of the girl in bed, and that could mean several different things. If any of you have seen the movie, it would be awesome if you could tell me what the story is like……….

I just saw the movie on Friday and McAvoy was reaaallly great in it! 😉 But unfortunately, there was a decent amount of unnecessary and inappropriate content, which would especially not be good for a Christian guy (I don't know if you're a guy or girl, so I'm just saying… for that matter, I don't know if you're a Christian, but forgive my assumption!). If you want to know details, then I would suggest going to a site like pluggedin.com. Of course, the reviews on "Plugged In" do contain spoilers for the movie, so if you don't want to know the whole plot then I suggest looking on IMDB or dove.org .

But otherwise, the movie was really awesome! 😀 A good addition to the X-Men series. 🙂

Don't you just hate it when movies are ruinined by unnessesary curse word or innopropriate content?

@ Not Of This World: Yes!!!

  6. Princess Lucy says:

which of all the x-men films did you guys like the best?
This film will definitely increase James popularity!

  7. glumPuddle says:

McAvoy has had the best post-Narnia career of any of the actors. But then again, I guess we should wait and see what the Pevensie actors do now.

X1 was good. X2 was great. X3 was bad. 'Wolverine' was horrible. FC was okay.

    (Small spoiler ahead)
The scene you are referring to is an important piece of Mystique and Magneto’s development. Mystique (who has the power to change her appearance at will) is trying to be in a sexy form for Magneto, but he tells her she should look like herself (even though her natural form is blue and weird). Mystique is ashamed of being a mutant and her appearance, but Magneto tells her she should be proud of it.

Magneto's parents were killed in the holocaust. They were killed for being what they were. Magneto has vowed not to let humanity respond the same way to mutants, and that's what makes him an interesting character and a sympathetic villain. But ironically, this desire has led to Magneto becoming a modern day Hitler. He has become the very thing he was trying to destroy.

I’m not saying this is a great scene, but at least Magneto didn't say "don't run from who you are" or "I want you to be just like you." Because that would've been super cheesy. 😉

You are right. I am a gal and a Christian. Thanks so much for being honest, MoiraRose!

  10. Aslan's BFF says:

Thank you for clarifying. I am one of those strict Christians who doesn't care for innuendos or such.

Very pleased to hear how well this new X-men movie has turned out. I was sure it was going to be as bad as the last two films. Haven't seen the movie yet, but from what I've seen thus far, I'm surprised how much I like McAvoy as Xavier.
Wasn't sure if I'd like him with out the bald head and wheelchair.

  12. Aimee says:

I was surprised as well that James McAvoy took on a summer blockbuster role but I can now see why. The movie just looked FUN! I enjoyed it.

  13. Flower Power says:

James Mcavoy was so hot i wanted to go up to the screen and kiss 'im !!! 😀

  14. Princess Lucy says:

Did anyone see James in Penelope and Starter for 10?
They really funny……James as a nerd and James as a romantic person

  15. Rilian The Disenchanted says:

It's about time they stop those X-Men movies. They had their trilogy, now prequels and probably sequels to prequels in the next couple years. When is this ever going to stop? The movie market is floated with superheroes and they all have about the same origin. The same story over and over again.

  16. Elliot says:

    Don't be stupid!

  17. Megan says:

What was that about Elliot? You need to stop being stupid yourself. What was the point of what you said? You don't need to be saying things like that just all of a sudden, because then people will think you are just plain weird!

  18. Megan says:

Seriously, FP, that was kinda…..creepy. Not to be mean, by the way! It just made me nearly pass out. LOL

  19. MoiraRose says:

Your very welcome, Aslan's BFF! 😉 I'm glad I could help.

@ Not Of This World : It is quite sad when really amazing movies are filled with bad content. ;( But thank goodness for the amazing ones that aren't! 😀

  20. Not Of This World says:

At least we know that Narnia won't ever have inoproriate content! 🙂

  21. Not Of This World says:

    X-)

  22. Anhun says:

They'll stop making them as soon as the movies stop making money. That's the business.

  23. Anhun says:

I think Michael Fassbender would make a great Rilian. He's the right age for it. I think he has the right look, and he can certainly act. I'd like to see him play Rilian (when he's enchanted) in the style of Douglas Fairbanks Jr from Prisoner of Zenda.

  24. Aslan's BFF says:

    At least we hope so…..

  25. Bookwyrm says:

I guess that means you'll be calling for an end to Narnia movies then? 😉 After all, they've had their trilogy. Why should they make more?

I assume you're also calling for an end to action movies, chick flicks, rom coms, and teen movies since they're all far more generic and repetitive than the recent crop of superhero films. Also police procedurals and medical dramas on television since Lord only knows they've all been done over and over. You are concerned with the lack of groundbreaking film innovation in Hollywood today, right? Not just complaining because you don't like a genre that's popular right now?

  26. Bookwyrm says:

I think this is the first actor suggestion for Rilian that I could support whole-heartedly. Most I see on the forums are just people picking whatever guy they think is hawt, but Fassbender definitely has the acting talent for the role and does look the part. Shame he's probably too busy and becoming too popular for a role in a kids movie.
