Video: Eustace and a Minotaur

The latest video posted by NarniaWeb Spy Tamara shows the crew filming a scene in which Eustace (Will Poulter) runs into a minotaur on board the Dawn Treader. You can also see Howard Berger with the minotaur, and 2nd AD Jeff Okabayashi talking through the microphone (left side).

UPDATE: Tamara sent us pictures and a report:

Hi, I went to the set again this morning and last Friday. Unfortunately I didn’t see anything to too exciting this time. I did get some shots of Will but that was about it. Some of the photos I have included show the bronze statue, and you can see in the photos that they look like fauns, but they have no horns.. Also, I only just noticed that some of the Narnian crew have different coloured outfits. Some are blue (top) and maroon (pants) and some are maroon (top) and blue (pants). Am I the only person who’s just noticed that?? Haha. Do you think it’s got to do with ranking??
A funny story, there were a whole bunch of people crammed right up at the fence watching and a few of them started to call out to Shane Rangi who was walking around. He came over to talk to them and this little old lady asked him to pose while she took a picture and he gave all the little kids high five’s (don’t reckon they’d have a clue who he was lol). I couldn’t hear what he was saying but everyone was laughing really loudly and some guy came over and had to tell everyone to shut up!
I also heard some people talking and apparently this is the last week that they will be filming at Cleveland!

  1. Ya, I mean if you listen carefuly and think about it when they say "even the slightest of enemys can unite the oldest of foes" (sorry if I'm noyt exact I know it "unite" or "reunite"). Anyways It means that someone currently attacking needs everyone of that land to help defete. And they say" Wasn't it your people who fought along side the White Witch. Yes and I'll gladly do it again if it would rid us of these barbarians" . Which means you may not like it but to free your land you need to team up with the people you dispise. So the minotaurs eventually.

I think the BBC version reflects the time and environment in which the books came out, not just in special effects but in the way themes and portrayals were done. I think the BBC version would be considered suitable for a 50s audience. The new movies probably aren't, but that's the appeal of the stories and the universe CS Lewis created. CoN is to an extent timeless in nature, any generation can still find something likable about them as the success of the movies prove today.

  3. I agree because after I watched the bbc version of The Silver Chair I didn't want to read the book because the others have been so much like the book that I figured that was like the book to and when I did I got bored, but I aws wrong like a year later I read the book and the movie was so off I mean Jill wasn't even blonde.

  4. Narniapinoy says:

I totally agree! say it to GP's face. ^^

  5. tenthofthatname says:

I feel the same way in general, the BBC version brought nothing new to the world of Narnia for me. The current films are different for sure, but I really like what they brought to the world of Narnia. And honestly if it were up to me, The Silver Chair couldn't be done without a hard PG or 12A rating. It was a particularly morbid book and to my memory the only one that involves cannibalism so to speak, eating a Talking Stag and all!

  6. Leolani says:

I think the newer Narnia films don't compare to the BCC versions. If only the graphics of the new ones could be mixed with the spirit of the old ones!

  7. Leolani says:

oops… I meant to post this as a reply to the comments above. oh well 🙂

  8. Leolani says:

Well Susan is in 'the horse and his boy', and Peter is in 'the last battle', but not visa versa.

  9. Leolani says:

Indeed! his character would be so incomplete without the british counsel!

  10. Leolani says:

Yes, we Know that Reepicheep is the first creature he encounters because we have read the book, and I would suggest that you should too. And they would be following the book nearly word for word if I (and many others who grew up loving the books) could have our way.

  11. Leolani says:

    he was sea-sick

finally something from Eustace that we can all see and post pictures of! 😀

this is hilarious, Eustace running around the ship in panic, i am so enjoying how they're building up his character. since he still has his Earth clothes maybe this is the part where he just woke up from being rescued and is disoriented.

i figured that they would do Eustace' scenes on the days that Ben Barnes isnt on set. i found it odd how earlier reports featured mostly Ben and Skandar and Georgie but no Will. then i realized that it plays nicely to Ben's schedule since he has to leave for Toronto and wouldnt be on set last Friday, and sounds like even Monday.

  13. JadistarkilleR says:

that was when Reep was the only Narnian creature on ship. obviously on the film there are a lot more creatures than him. i have no problems with Will running around the ship being frightened witless by seeing Narnian creatures. it serves to underline how completely narrow minded he is and would only better his character when he redeems himself later on.

  14. JadistarkilleR says:

if they had Ben without the beard he wouldnt look like he has aged at all, because even if Skandar and Georgie have obviously matured, Ben looks exactly the same as he did two years ago. i kid you not (its the genes!). so they had to make adjustments to Caspian's look to "match" the look on the kids.

  15. JadistarkilleR says:

because its Eustace! 😀 the kid with the smartest mouth that side of Narnia 😛

also there has been a dearth of anything Eustace related, some photos came out but we cant post them since they came from that extortionist papz site. most of the week was exciting with Caspian and Edmund and Lucy, but everyone knows that Eustace is the new guy, and he was noticeably absent in their scenes.

  16. tenthofthatname says:

Just wanted to say that I agree with what you said about Ben Barnes not aging, it's so true especially when you look at his Dorian Gray! Though I think the beard adds more than 3 years to his look, not that it's a bad look at all.

  17. LadyLiln says:

Not necessarily against minotaurs or artistic liberty, minotaurs just seem out of place onboard VDT. I think any massive creature's appearance will be jolting and magnified on a ship.

Even so I think they're the perfect creatures to first scare Eustace out of his wits. They'll do the trick. 🙂

  18. liz says:

Lucy , u know they did try 2make her come back in the 2nd narnia movie(disney version)also. didnt like that part, she had the whole 2hrs on the 1st movie & then she had about 5-10mins in the 2nd one right?

  19. Starlily says:

I agree that minotaurs seem a little out of place on the Dawn Treader, but I'm hoping they won't be too conspicuous. Once you get used to them, I mean. Of course to Eustace, that minotaur would be WAY more than conspicuous 🙂

  20. Starlily says:

🙂 Yeah, that's happened before to me. You have to be fast to get in the first five comments.

  21. daughter of the King says:

As Trufflehunter says "…we would not have Aslan on our side if we had that sort with us…(paraphrased, Prince Caspian)"
I would go along with Minotaurs becoming good guys after all these years, except in the book they specifically do not contact any of the creatures who formerly fought for the White Witch.

  22. FriendOfNarnia2 says:

They already have a version that is a word for word adaption. It is called the BBC version. I think BBC showed that even if you follow the books word perfectly you're not guaranteed a great film.

  23. Aravis(narniafan#1) says:

Maybe so, but it also could be that he did something wrong and he's trying to hide some place. Several other reasons, though.

  24. Aravis(narniafan#1) says:

    Thanks Tamara!!!

  25. Eden says:

    True. *nods in agreement*

  26. StBrianofMinneapolis says:

Eustace + more narnians than Reep = Awesome, unless of course this cuts into Eustace and Reep's interactions.

  27. Lady Polly says:

WOW!!! I guess eustace is scared i can't to see what he thinks reepicheep.

  28. Pattertwigs Pal says:

I completely agree with you Pogginfan. I was wondering if anyone else was going to pick up on that. If it was soon after he had come aboard the ship, he would be wet. I hope they have a way to make it so that the first creature he sees is Reep. That is important to set up their relationship. I hope this scene is when he is running away from Reep.

  29. Anonymous Narnian says:

That would be interesting, GP. Adding to the psych of suddenly being surrounded by mythical creatures and also to his resentment of being in Narnia.

  30. Lutra's Pearl says:

I think tha the is the BEST Eustace they could have gotten. That is what I always thought he would look like. Keep the story of Aslan alive!

  31. Lutra's Pearl says:

I don't know but they really need to find out. Nice to see a fellow Redwaller! Keep the story of Aslan alive!

  32. Embrace says:

Eustace: "WAAAAAH!!!" The Minotaur: "You´re not used to us Eustace?" 😉

  33. Lutra's Pearl says:

QUESTION HERE!!! Why is every one upset that Caspain is using Peter's sword? I mean Peter gave it to him at the end of PC, wouldn't it make sence for him to us that really great sword? I mean I would. I would like some feed-back on this one to see what other people think. Keep the story of Aslan alive!

  34. Lucille Brown says:

Yeah.It would so cool if they had him say that in the movie.

  35. K. J. Hill says:

lol, I love it! Thank you!

  36. Is Will yawning or shouting in the 8th pix?

  37. Tauriel says:

Ugh, the White Witch in the BBC series was so damn UGLY and just awful! Bleargh! Tilda Swinton was awesome and had beautiful costumes.

  38. se ve bien el video pero no sebe el personaje pero sebe poco sisisisisisi pero nimodo sisisisisi bye

  39. Princess Arya says:

Looks like a yawn to me 😀

  40. Ben says:

I'm glad to see that the Telmarine crew still has the Spanish/Mediterranean look from Prince Caspian. I don't mind the few Narnian creatures on board either.

  41. pselpevensie says:

    these are awesome! thanks tamara!

  42. Shy Galadriel says:

Is that Taylor Swift in pic 7? ;P

  43. NarniaNut says:

Oh jeez.I always automatically thinki you are talking about Will MOSESLEY!
    Its so annoying!

  44. NarniaNut says:

Oh,that guy!I forgot all about him!
. I meant to send this reply to Princess Arya but there wasn't a reply button!
    Go Narnia! 🙂

  45. daughter of the King says:

Yes, creative license should be used when making adaptations, but only to make the story better. Prince Caspian was perhaps a better movie, but it was not a better story. Above all, the goal should be to tell a good story, not just a good movie. If it will improve the story, then creative license should be used in excess, but so far the films have not improved the stories, only made them different.

  46. JadistarkilleR says:

check the forums, theres a thread dedicated to this topic.

personally i have no problems with Caspian using Rhindon, at least during his reign. flags bearing the Lion as a standard of the Narnian rule is fine, but i believe you need something more significant to represent the ruling monarch– hence the sword of High King Peter.

  47. Lucy says:

I know I just wish.I wonder how Lucy and Edmund get in to Narnia:)

  48. tenthofthatname says:

    I confess…I don't know what a GP is.

  49. Lucy says:

    Well I like both witches.:)

  50. Lucy says:

Oh I understand. Do you like minotaurs?

  51. Lucy says:

I don't like how Eustace looks in his actor form!

  52. yeswelovenarnia says:

    so cool thanks!!!

  53. Omg I'm watching this in class (my teacher doesn't care as long as the computers and us are quiet) and its hilarious because my computer at home is slow and this is much faster so its better so I can really see the look on his face and how hes runingand its ssoooooo funny.
    P.s. we're in free time.

  54. tenthofthatname says:

What makes a story "better" is going to be purely subjective. Several people think the relationship between Peter and Caspian made the story better, several people do not, and some think it made the story worse purely for giving the characters a facet to their personalities that wasn't there in the books. I have to disagree with the latter's point of view because for me PC answered a question that was completely avoided in the book: How do the Pevensies feel being made young again? For me this is integral to the realism of a character and it was missing in the book. The film put it in. That makes for a good story to me, even if that makes the story a little more adult than the books intended.

  55. Ugly Pig says:

My point is; why is he so disgusted with Reepicheep if he's already encountered a bunch of weird creatures? That is the beginning of the animosity between Reep and Eustace which is fairly significant in the early parts of the story.

  56. sory for not saying this earlier but if you look closly but he looks behind him so hes running away from something.

  57. Roguewolf says:

I don't know if anyone said this, but won't a minotaur mess up the plot a bit? I mean, when they face the dufflepuds and Eustace as a dragon, they may not be as afraid. Don't get me wrong, I love minotaurs! I'm just concerned about the repercussions this might have on the story.

  58. Narniamiss says:

Wow, I love the look on Will's face!
