Comingsoon.net Confirms Dawn Treader Will Be in 3D
As an update to our story earlier today, Comingsoon.net contacted their sources and confirmed that a decision has been made and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader will be released in 3D.
Earlier today, a rumor started circulating the internet that 20th Century Fox will release The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 3D this December. ComingSoon.net has confirmed through our source that it is indeed the case.
It will be a 3D-filled holiday season, which kicks-off with DreamWorks Animation’s Megamind on Nov. 5. Disney will then release the Rapunzel film Tangled in 3D on Nov. 12, followed a week later by Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 on Nov. 19. The other 3D release scheduled for December is Disney’s Tron Legacy on the 17th, right in between “Narnia” and “Travels.”
As far as I’m concerned, there’s really no bad news here. 3D movies have been making an immense amount of money compared to what they would have made if they had only been released in 2D, even considering that this particular movie will now cost an approximately $12mil more to make now (assuming the run time is about 2 hours). The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was shot without being planned as a 3D movie, so it’s not going to be all about the special effects. And for those of you out there that really don’t like 3D movies, nobody is forcing you to go see it in 3D; there will still be a 2D version released as well.

Ooo…this is a perfect excuse for me to watch it twice. Once in 2-D then again in3-D
that was my thought exactly!
This is an aweosme thing. Narnia again and in 3D its like a dream come true and it will be escepially exciting becuase it is Voyage of the dawn treader
My dad told me this news before I read it on here claiming that he knew this Narnia scoop before I did. Although, for this so called ''rumor'' was mentioned on Narniaweb twice at two different times and thus I thought it was highly likely to happen. I never really saw in advantage in having it in 3-D, but you make a good point now I have will have another excuse to see it more times than once.
Cool, I'll watch it in 3D opening day. Too bad they didn't shoot it with 3D cameras though. 😉
great news!
I hope they will release both here. I could only see Avatar in 3D for example, the cinema's here only showed it in 3D..
Like I said before, I was against it, but it's not stopping me from seeing it in 2D so why should I care, I will be seeing it in 2D for my first viewing, then 3D for my second! With Tron being a 3D film coming out only a week after VDT, I think this is a very smart move by Fox, and God Willing it will get SC Green lit!
Guess I shouldn't be surprised considering Avatar recently became the highest grossing movie of all time. (That movie may have been in 3D, but that didn't stop the characters from being totally one-dimensional, stereotypical, and generally boring)
I will undoubtedly be seeing the 2D version of VDT first. That is the version Michael Apted had in his head when he was shooting. A later viewing might be in 3D.
I totally agree. See the 2D version first.
If I have hesitation about it, it's because it wasn't originally filmed in 3D like Avatar and therefore may not seem as seemless since they sort of have to port it over to 3D.
Why glumPuddle must continuously bash a fun movie like Avatar which had fun and entertaining characters I'll never know. It certainly taught the world how to do 3D though. I don't notice it when it's done well.
Yes, how are they going to do that? I didin't realize that it was possible to take a movie shot in 2D and turn it into 3D. Can we tell if this means it will be awkward, and in your face, kind of a thing, or less 3D and more of an enhancement???
haha, the podcast people continue their conversations… 😀
glumPuddle has a good point though: Seeing the movie as the director planned it for the first time would give us a closer vision to his.
As far as story and characters, there was nothing in Avatar remotely original. Everything was pulled directly out of other movies. The word I'd use for the script is "lazy." Endlessly predictable. Most of the dialogue made me hang my head in shame.
The only thing new was the mind-blowing visuals. Without that, it would be a very forgettable film.
From the ground up, Avatar was made to be a fun 3D popcorn ride. I guess it is encouraging that the decision to release VDT in 3D is coming after the shoot. We know it wasn't conceived as a 3D gimmick initially.
But look at Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland". The film was shot in the 2D format and was converted to 3D later. And the 3D usage was INCREDIBLY gimmicky.
Then again, Burton did already know it was going to be in 3D while he was filming it.
Not that I had a problem with the use of 3D in the film. It added to the whole trippy feel to the movie.
Don't forget about Alice, she's doing pretty good at the box office atm. 😉 Burton's highest grossing film to date, and that says a lot.
i have a question… is it playing in 2d at the theater?
oh sorry nevermind i just read the end
I'm not overlay crazy about 3D, but this makes perfect sense for the marketplace. It's a no-brainer… the film is sure to gross at least $12m more with 3D than without.
Me neither, but I hope it goes well and makes a lot of money. Personally, I like 2D better.
I'll def want to see the 2D first, maybe followed by 3D. I'm really glad this will bring in more $, therefore bringing more movies!
Well, like I said on the previous topic, i can see how alot of people might be annoyed by the studio forcing 3D onto the movie – it is not part of the director's vision, and it would only be a superficial add-on which serves no real benefit to the story.
However, like i said, i would be more worried if it were the other way round and they had designed the movie to be 3D – there would have been an undue focus on the visuals, and no doubt they would of gone out of their way to incorporate unnecessary scenes or gimmick shots, purely for the purposes of showing off the 3D effects.
At least this way, we don't need to be worried about missing out on an integral part of the movie once the film leaves cinemas after its theatrical run. The 2D version will still be the definitive version, and since that's all we are going to be able to watch at home, i'm more than happy that's the way it is.
Whoa! For some reason, I had in my head that they already confirmed it wouldn't be in 3D…guess I was wrong, then. Oh well. Actually, this is perfectly fine with me. Like mentioned before, as long as it wasn't shot specifically in 3D (and full of distracting "special effects" made just for the sake of things popping out at you), I think the 3D is a good idea! If it makes more money for Narnia, I say bring it on!
Does this mean that VDT will be in IMAX?
I am by no means against 3D movies in general, but I gotta ask – is there any artistic merit to this when the movie was not actually shot in 3D to begin with?
Maybe not, but with all the other movies coming out in 3D around that time, it seems like there's a definite practical reason…
Thankfully, my theatre doesn't release 3D movies. So 2D for me, and that they didn't make it with intent for 3D gives me some reassurance. I just hope they don't make the 4th installment purposefully for 3D and ruin it. Make them for 2D and then change them 3D and I'll be happy.
Yeah. And with SC being my favourite….
I might be inclined to think that this is an APRIL FOOLS.
But if it's true, then I'm super excited!!!!
lol. only one problem: it's not April 1!
I'll still be seeing this is 2D..
I am really excited about this! This should help VDT to bring in more money.
THAT IS SO COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂
Oh my word why fox why. Nobody is going to see it in 3D my friends already said they wont so now I think the audience is going to not be focused on the movie they will be more focused on the visual effects I think plus it essential supposed to be a 3D movie in the firs place. All I know is that I hope it is in 2D that's what I'm going to seee
All the numbers indicate otherwise. Avatar recently became the highest grossing film of all time, with most of that money coming from 3D showings. Alice in Wonderland was also in 3D, and did very well.
I'm not really thrilled that VotDT will be in 3D, but I am relived that it was not shot for 3D so we won't be seeing any 3D moments…..
Hmmmmm… I really don't know what to think. I just hope they aren't spending that $12 million for nothing. I've never seen a real 3D movie, so right now I'm wondering how it will differ from the 2D. Will anything pop out at you? I can't imagine what would. Maybe the sea serpent. 😛
So assuming the audience pays $2.00 extra for the 3-D version, how many tickets would have to be sold to compensate for the $12 million spent to convert it to 3-D? It looks like the answer is approximately 6 million. I'd say Dawn Treader can sell that many 3-D tickets.
Starlily, with 3D, everything looks as though you're /right there/. For example, I went on a 3D "roller coaster ride" and it really looked like I was in a roller coaster car and that it was really connecting with the tracks I saw kind of sticking out from where the screen should be (as though they really extended beyond my moving chair). (The most irritating part of the ride was that, at one point, there was this really annoying light in the top-left corner of my vision and though I tried to block it with my hand, it was still there!) So that's how 3D works.
I will do everything possible to avoid seeing it in 3D. If that is not possible, I will certainly pass on seeing VDT. Wont lose sleep.
Wow! You must of had some bad experiences with 3-D.
I'm watching the 2D first… I saw Alice in wonderland in 3D, the glasses killed the feeling… Didnt really enjoyed the movie, it was a great movie though, but I really really hate 3D-glasses… I think I'm gonna write a song about it..
NOOOOOO!!!!
Nooooooooooo
Noooooo!.. wait, why am i saying no. i like the idea. i think. 🙂
YESSSSSSS!
Yesssss!! i think. 😉
Totally!
As long as the 3D conversion can pay for itself and then some then im all for it!
After the feedback of Avatar–this doesn't surprise me. I will DEFINATELY see the 2D first… Apted did direct it for this so yeah. Wow this is interesting news!
I've never really been a fan of 3D movies so i was hoping that VDT wouldn't be 😛
Oh well at least it's not stopping me from seeing it in 2D
Oh no! I'm pretty sure the theaters around here only have movies in 3D. I, for one, am not in favor of this. At least it wasn't made for 3D. Then, if I'm right about the theaters here, I can at least enjoy it as much as the other two on DVD. Not that I wouldn't enjoy it at all in the theater, but I'm watched about five seconds of a 3D movie (with the glasses on) and I got a headache. That's not very good, considering the fact that I am not prone to headaches. Oh well, I can hope for the best. Maybe I'm wrong about the theaters around here…
I just saw Alice in 3-D, and though I liked the movie, I could never completely focus on anything. Maybe it's just me?? Idk. I'll definitely be seeing this in 2-D the first time, and I'm not happy that the marketing for this is now going to be all "NARNIA IN 3-D!!!" because that bugs me.
Hopefully Harry Potter doesn't go this way now, too. It's an annoying fad, but if it helps rake in enough money to make The Silver Chair, so be it.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Harry Potter will be in 3D too.
LOL! I just read that on MuggleNet… geez. So long as I can see it in 2-D, I guess I'll be fine.
Hmm… Well, my first thought was "NO!" However, I may be being hasty, since I have not actually seen a movie in 3D. I'm going to refuse to think negative, because I just KNOW that I'm going to like VDT! Besides, it'll still be released in 2D. Who knows, maybe I'll like watching it in 3D. I'm just glad that it wasn't shot as a 3D movie, as that sounds a bit weird to me.
For those who have seen a 3D movie in the theater, do you have to wear the weird red/blue glasses?
Thankfully the glasses are no longer red/blue, but just like normal, clear glasses. Things look a lot more realistic than when they have a purplish tinge with the old 3D glasses!!!
The one thing that comes to mind: The shot of the Dawn Treader riding out of the picture frame into the theater will blow your socks off! (if they shot it coming right at the camera… I hope they did, but since it was shot for 2D who knows)
greetings fellow centaur! 🙂
I had to see Alice in Wonderland a second time, this time in 3D because I heard it was so much better, and it was! In this case, the movie had scenes where things were meant to fit in for a 3D movie (things go flying towards the screen, etc.) A part of me feels that if the filmmakers do not do this, the movie will not be anything special. I found myself constantly taking my glasses off and looking at the screen during the talking scenes of A in W to even see if the glasses made much of a difference, which they did not. I think that unless more people see the movie, they will be spending unnecessary money to convert it into 3D in which case, the Walden Media Narnia series will just be a trilogy.
Avatar was cool in 3d. Voyage will be cool too! But 2d will be fine. Because it's a great story. The story itself is fine 2d or 3d!
I think this is great! I personally would like to see it in 2D first to see how it was originally, but I am definately seeing it in 3D! I felt like jumping and screaming and finding some way to vent my joy when I heard this! 3D is soo cool. Makes it seem like you are completely in the story, and living onboard the Dawn Treader with the characters.
OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
I am seriously freaking out now. YES YES YES!!! My prayers have been answered!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I'm not going to worry so much about VDT going up against Tron Legacy. And like someone said, this gives me yet another excuse to deplete my bank account and see this movie multiple times in both 2D AND 3D. 😀 YAY!!!!!!
Plus, 3D is going to work PERFECTLY with this story. The giant wall of water, the kids getting swept into Narnia by a gigantic wave of water, a sea monster, Eustace as a dragon (hopefully with some nice flying scenes), the duffers…AH THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!!! 😀
what these film makers dont seem to understand is that the novelty of 3d films will wear off!!! it is very likely that ppl will not be able to justify paying the higher prices every visit to the cinema! here in australia movies are a very expensive day out in most cities, here i pay $18.50 to se a 3d movie! and i have already said no to seeing movies that i liked the look of, because it is just too much money! i mean you can buy the dvd for that much and keep it!!! not to mention they are trying to bring the magic back to narnia with this film, and bring in the Family audience again… most family's will not be able to afford to take the whole family to a 3d movie everytime, the novelty will wear off, and ppl will stop paying the higher price!!! i just pray this will not be the case for Narnia, but im afraid it is looking that way! lets all pray for the best possible outcome for this film… and promote it to everyone you know, and everyone you dont!
Pretty much my thoughts as well. I've been debating whether to go see Avatar or Alice because I want to see how the technology these days actually feels like (I've seen some shorter 3D films many years back), but since neither movie is THAT interesting to me, I haven't decided yet. But I certainly won't go see both (and all the rest that are lining up now) because "OMG they're in 3D!!!11". Not even if I end up thinking the one I saw was an amazing experience. Going to movies is so expensive that I pick very carefully what films I see in the theatre and which ones I wait to get on DVD. And the season tickets we have here (that are a bit cheaper/one ticket than if you'd buy them separately) don't cover 3D films, so unless there's a change in that / drop in ticket prices I really think the novelty will wear off soon. And as long as the basic reasoning in Hollywood for going 3D is "more money from the tickets" I don't see that happening.
Do NOT see Avatar. It is overly political and if you're not that big into 3D movies anyway, you won't be able to ignore those undertones. Plus, the plot is incredibly weak. If you've heard the "Pocahontas with smurfs" joke, that's basically what it is. With a LOT of liberal political mush thrown in. The only thing good about the movie is the extensive amount of effects and even those, IMO, weren't enough to clear away the overbearing political message of the movie.
Alice, on the other hand, was quite an interesting take on Carroll's original stories and had a PLOT in addition to all the crazy effects. The effects add a lot of Carroll's weirdness to the story, but the film isn't just about them. And it's actually not as creepy as it may look (in comparison to Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, it is definitely not as weird).
Sweet!
My Dad is going to be thrilled!
Ok, time to do the happy dance.
haha this i want 2 see! 😀
I thank you and good coprendieron at last I can see the 3D movie of Narnia The traveler Trabesia Alba graces and made it 3D and 2D muchisimas gracias and that gives me happiness to see her in the two shapes in 3D and 2D and following so you can win hechandole Narnia!
Considering all of the other 3D movies being released at the same time as Voyage, I think it's a good move. I can't wait to see the Dawn Treader itself in 3D! 😀
okay so how will i get to see the 2D version and when?
This is awsome, narnia in 3-D my dream cme true!!!!!!!!!! im going to watch it in 2-D and 3-D
you have the excellent 3D haser narnia the traveler's Alba Trabesia hase me its wonderful to be points of the Narnia movie Trabesia Alba traveler's 3D and 2D and that's good that they put it well in 3D and 2D digital Chronicles of Narnia The Dawn of the traveler Trabesia very good and makes me see those two fastastico of Mandera to see it in 3D and 2D narnia the traveler's Alba Trabesia bye.
Alas, Google translator doesn't catch everything. 🙁
haha that's cool.
I don't think I will want to see the 3D version, but I might try it only because my family or whoever goes might want to see it in 3D.
i'm not particulary thrilled but it's not horrible either. i'll probably watch it in 3d and 2d
I can not stand 3D movies. Thankfully, it will also be in 2 D.
3D? OOHH! Now my head really has reason to swim.
well hey if it means making more money for the movie then sure, im ok with it. doesnt bother me cuz i can just still go ahead and just watch it in 2D, and if i wanna watch it in 3D then i'll do that
🙂
oh, my… I'm excited! this is going to be awesome! especially as it will be a good movie anyways! oh boy!
Hmm…I'm fine with this, as long as it pays for itself. Possibly the attraction of a 3D film will bring in more than a 2D, and since I can see it in both formats…I'm fine with the change. Sail on, VoDT, ever toward Aslan's Country!
Sticking with the 2D version myself.
I don't care I just want to watch the movie, lol 😉
so long as there's a 2-D one, too, I'm cool. I've nothing against 3D movies, but I have a fear that I will get motion sickness (I'm quite prone to it), and it would be nice to have the option to watch VDT without puking into my popcorn.
Oh dear! Lol!
Much the same problem. Just hoping that the local theatre has the 2D option.
Same here! That's my main reason for going to see it in 2D.
That will be really cool to see! I would love to see the scene that was done with the water flooding in through the picture. I may find myself holding my breath without realizing it!
is glad its going to be in 2d and 3d will still see it more than twice
I'm going to see it in both 2D and 3D. I can't wait!
Has anyone from Narniaweb gotten official word from the production yet on whether or not VDT will be in 3D? I'd hate to get too excited one way or another until we hear directly from Fox or Walden.
It sounds to me like there are two distinct opinions about this: either you hate it or you love it. It also sounds to me like a lot of the people that have something against 3D either haven't seen a 3D movie for a while or had some bad experience with it, i.e. getting a headache or something. So let me clear something up for those people. 3D movies have changed drastically in the last few years. They are no longer the dorky movies that have stuff shooting out at you to awe the audience (although a few movies still throw those tricks in once in a while). The technology has gotten a lot better, making it so that the audience feels more like they are experiencing the movie, rather than just watching it. And let me explain how 3D works. One person (I can't remember who) mentioned that when they took the glasses off, nothing looked really different. That was because the movie was not shot as a 3D movie; instead, it was converted later. A movie that is made for 3D is shot at two slightly different angles, imitating the way our eyes work. Those two different images are then superimposed on top of each other. The glasses are made so that one lense pops inward slightly, while the other pops outward, changing the way your eyes see the image. One eye will see one part of the image, while the other eye sees the other. Your brain takes care of the rest, just as it does in everyday life, making the image look 3D. If you were to take off your glasses while watching a movie shot in 3D, you will notice that the image looks slightly blurry. That is the two images at different angles put on top of each other. That is also why several people get headaches while watching 3D movies: the glasses are making their eyes focus in an unnatural and uncomfortable way.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that 3D isn't as horrible as some people think. While I'm not a big fan of cheap 3D tricks, I do love to watch a good 3D movie. For example, I saw Up! in 3D, and while they didn't throw in any cheap 3D tricks, every shot was absolutely breath-taking. There was one shot that showed hills and clouds in the distance, and I had to double check to remind myself that I was watching a movie, and not looking out an airplane window. So before you completely shoot down the possibility of watching Narnia in 3D, I would try it out first. You might find yourself blown away.
Very interesting info there, Fire Fairy! I used to be one of those people who didn't like 3D movies, but, like you said, they have DEFINITELY gotten better over the years. I'm looking forward to this.
WOW, thanks for the info!
Yaaaaaaaay! 😀
I'm soo excited to go and see it! AAAAGH XD
awsome i will probalay go see it in both 3d and 2d.
So sick of the producers trying to make Narnia fit in the same box as every other movie in Hollywood. They should trust the unique storyline and feel of the books in stead of going for the new technology to get people intrested. Let's hope the movie's better in 3D..
While you might feel that way, truth is, what the filmmakers are doing trying to attract other people (while I'm not completely sure if 3D is the best move) is probably okay. Not everybody is like most of us- all the friends I have who like Narnia like it because of PRINCE CASPIAN's action.
Now, it's probably just where I live and the certain people I know, but that must show you SOMETHING about the general audience.
I just hope the movie is faithful to the book.
Hmm…interesting! I'll probably go see it both in 3D and 2D…
