Carey Mulligan Confirms ‘Narnia’ Casting

Carey Mulligan appears to have confirmed her role in Netflix’s upcoming Chronicles of Narnia adaptation. On the red carpet for her new film ‘The Ballad of Wallis Island’, Mulligan was asked how she manages her workload while raising three kids. She replied:
[…] Beef has been amazing and we’re just done, and Narnia is coming up… I’m so lucky to get to work with people that are great and so lovely.”
She was later interviewed on the BBC’s ‘Woman’s Hour’ podcast where she elaborated further on getting to work with Greta Gerwig:
Interviewer: And you’re working with Greta Gerwig next on The Chronicles of Narnia. This is very exciting… can you tell us anything about it?
Mulligan: Not much yet, because its very new, so i’m sort of not really into the process yet, but i just think she is so brilliant and i’ve always wanted to work with her. I wanted to work with her when she was acting, and everything that she’s directed has just been inspired, so she was just on this list of just people that it would make my year or decade to work with them. So i’m so excited
Mulligan also appears to have confirmed in a recent interview with AnOther Magazine that she will indeed be playing the role of Digory’s Mother in the film, and that she had been looking to work with Greta Gerwig for the last three years:
I chased Greta down for about three years,” she says. “Every time I was in the same room as her – there’s creepy photos of me on the internet next to her, just being like, “So, Greta …”

Earlier this month, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Mulligan was in negotiations to play Digory’s Mother in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew. These recent comments strongly suggest that she has now officially joined the cast.
We can now add Carey Mulligan to the short list of actors confirmed for Netflix’s Narnia, joining Emma Mackey (Sex Education, Barbie), who will play Jadis.
Filming is expected to begin this summer in the United Kingdom.
This is wonderful news! I think Carey Mulligan would do a great job in that role, whether or not the role is expanded, I think she will play the part well. I just can’t help seeing her as Sally Sparrow a character in the episode “Blink”, series 3 of the modern Doctor Who. Yay!
Filming in the summer with two cast members confirmed?
It is a nice change to have actors being confirmed and not just in talks.
Like Rich Kuhn though, I’m a little surprised that there haven’t been more of them recently.
I think they should merge her character with Aunt Letty’s in the film. This way, she will have some interesting things to do. I’m looking forward to the scene of the confrontation with the witch.
Great to have Carey Mulligan confirmed -she’s a fantastic actress and a great pick for a Digory’s Mother.
However I don’t think it’s all that weird that we’ve only got two locked-in confirmed castings so far – Magician’s Nephew is a fairly small story with only a handful of human roles, and the majority of those have been at least rumoured so far.
There’s also another month at least untill filming starts, and I wouldn’t expect them to confirm the children’s roles untill then anyway. On the Walden films even some of the bigger roles weren’t confirmed untill after filming had started.
If Gerwig is getting someone with Mulligan’s talent for a smaller role like Digory‘s mother, I’m very interested to see who’ll play Frank and Helen.
I know she’s pregnant right now, but Saoirse Ronan could still play Queen Helen since (assuming it’s anything like the book and that they’re shooting chronologically for the children’s ages) she wouldn’t be required on set until much later this year.
Welcome Carey mulligan to narnia. I liked the confirmed cast so far. I think emma mackey is a great choice for the white witch as well. I personally was not expecting daniel craig for uncle Andrew but I think he has the acting chops to pull it off. The outlier is meryl streep.
Now I am one of those people who will judge the final film after seeing it. I am mixed about the casting but I don’t hate it. Then I had a sudden thought. Greta talked about embracing the paradoxes of narnia, how it is not schematic. I wonder if she is applying that logic to aslan. What if it is a male lion with a female voice. Weird I know. But The land of narnia is wierd . A wierd creation by a wierd creator. The paradox of narnia also reflected on its creator. This is coming from someone who is open to meryl streep, but still very nervous about the choice. I am still looking forward to it, and I hope that in the end of the day that it is a good movie.
Honestly, pretty spot-on casting with this one. Excited to see her performance!
Welcome to Narnia, Carey!
Carey Mulligan is lovely, talented and has a sort of weepy face, even when smiling. Even if her role is small, she will vividly infuse the movie with pathos. Aslan approves!
Great to hear! I think this is one casting that we can all (mostly) get behind.
C.S Lewis didn’t get a female lion to play Aslan. I see the books reflect Christianity. I know that wasn’t C. S Lewis’ plan but it works out that way. Aslan gets killed in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and comes back in 3 days time so Edmond doesn’t have to. Jesus who IS A MALE in real life humbles himself comes down from Heaven to be born of a virgin. 33 yrs later he gets crucified on the cross and dies. Jesus died for us so we wouldn’t have to, and 3 days later HE is alive and about 500 ppl WITNESS it.
I like Meryl Streep she’s a very great actor. I will not watch my favorite Narnia movies with her playing Aslan. Aslan to me should and always should be a male playing the lion
@Gwen I don’t think a 75 yr old is joining a franchise playing the connective character in the property that plans to run for over 15 yrs, no matter their talent
