Carey Mulligan in Negotiations for Role of Digory’s Mother in ‘The Magician’s Nephew’

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that British actress Carey Mullligan is in negotiations to play the role of Digory’s Mother in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew.

This also marks the first time that an authoritative industry source has officially referred to the project by the name of the book.

Carey Mulligan is perhaps best known for roles in films such as The Great Gatsby (2013) and has been nominated for the Best Actress at the Academy Awards three times for An Education (2009), Promising Young Woman (2020) and Maestro (2023).

Sounds like a good choice. In addition to her more famous roles mentioned in this article, Mulligan also had a big part in Bleak House (2005.) I’m a bit surprised they were able to get her for Digory’s mother since that’s not a big part. I wonder if it means they’re expanding on the character or if Carey Mulligan just really wants to work with Greta Gerwig.

I would expect them to develop Digroy’s mother in the film.

She kind of looks the part!
Also good to have authoritative confirmation on the book they’re adapting… even though we kind of already knew.

I think she’ll get similar treatment to Laura Dern’s Marmie’s treatment in Little Women, but slightly more limited due to the obvious narrative constraints.

11 Day until the Narnia announcement in Netflix’s Tudum. Count Down.

  6. This is such nice news! She has a face that could easily be a poorly mother. And to have an Oscar nominated actress is a good idea.
