First Look at Lamp-post on Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ Set?
NarniaWeb has obtained a photo taken on the set of Netflix’s The Magician’s Nephew that includes a blurry look at two lampposts. The image, reportedly taken in October, was photographed on the same large outdoor street set near Longcross Studios — the one we recently linked to the homes of Digory and Polly.
According to planning application documents, filming on this set has spanned a full 30 non-consecutive days and involved hundreds of crew members and extras, suggesting the location was being used for significant scenes.
Given the scale of production here, we suspect portions of the “Fight at the Lamp-Post” sequence were filmed on this street as well. If that is the case, this may be our first look at the lamppost design that Jadis brings to Narnia.

If this is our first glimpse of the lamppost’s design, what do you think about it? Let us know below!

Between the Victorian-era terraced houses and the old fashioned style lampposts, it’s comforting to know that we are still going to see some of the classic aesthetics from the book, in spite of the time period shift.
So cool! I can definitely see it in a snowy Narnia, though it’s a bit more hard to imagine it springing up out of green grass. I wonder how they’re going to handle that? How will the sun reflect off the glass?
Ditto what Icarus commented.
I doubt that is the actual lampost. You can see another one on the left hand side behind that guy’s head. I think it’s just a row of lampposts.
@booger, yes they are multiple Lampposts on the set, but given that they will all be identical, it is somewhat immaterial whether its the exact “one” or not, at least as far as the overall design aesthetic goes.
Definitely a lamppost! Good work set designers 😉
We are here for all the little tidbits! I don’t think there is a crossbar on the lamp post, though. Or am I missing it? That’s kind of important; how else will it grow in Narnia?
As Icarus pointed out, I do appreciate that the old aesthetic is still being preserved in spite of the time shift. Makes me think that maybe the change won’t have too much of a jarring impact overall…
I saw people complaining on Instagram that this doesn’t look magical enough, as if it’s supposed to be some magical street lamp in London.
@Noelle Torgerson I actually thought of that when the lamppost grows in Narnia, maybe we don’t have to see it, but only the characters’ reactions.
At least we’ll still have the lamppost, even with the time period shifts. Maybe in LWW (assuming that will be the next one), we might have a vintage wardrobe as well.

To Jasmine Tarkheena:
That would be a unique way of doing it, but I must admit I’m a little bit confused on why we wouldn’t need to see the lamppost. It’s a really big part of the story and I feel like the scene would be a bit clunky if we only saw the characters’ reactions to it instead of the actual visuals. Would you mind explaining a bit more, please? 🙂
@ Anfinwen you can make out the crossbar right below the actual lamp. It shoots off to the left!
Pretty cool sneak peek — seeing the lamppost on Greta Gerwig’s Narnia set already gives such magical, nostalgic vibes
It looks very ordinary – but it’s supposed to! 🙂
@Noelle Torgerson I’m glad you ask. Well, since it seems like they’re going chronologically instead of publication, if you’re reading LWW first, you have no idea what a lamp-post is doing in the middle of the woods. Then MN as a prequel gives the answer. So I kind of feel like by just seeing the character’s reaction to the lamppost growing, it would not ruin the essence of LWW.
To Jasmine Tarkheena:
Oh my goodness, I never thought of that! Thank you for clearing that up! That’s a really good idea.
No one going to mention Greta meeting the POPE?!?
@Alex Anar, we did spot that Greta Gerwig met the Pope, however I guess since it was entirely unrelated to Narnia, and not specific to Greta Gerwig’s Catholic School upbringing either (lots of other stars were there) I think it ended up not quite reaching the threshold for a full news story.
It did however get discussed on our Discord discussion group for Patreon subscribers!
