This episode was right about third favorite being the hardest to pick. The Magician’s Nephew and The Horse and his Boy are tied for my No. 1 spot. I felt a little bad about choosing one over the other but at least both made the list. On the other hand, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Silver Chair are tied for my second favorite, and I couldn’t include both of them as No. 3. I’m still not sure I made the right choice.
Of those two, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is less formulaic and has more memorable imagery and is probably the more interesting of the two. But The Silver Chair has Puddleglum so I had to vote for that.
Seriously, I do think I’m more attached to the main characters of SC than those of VDT. Which is weird since most Narnia books have as their leads a boy and a girl who argue a lot but are ultimately friends. Theoretically, the dynamic between Caspian, Edmund, Lucy and Eustace should be more interesting. But I find myself getting more emotionally involved with Jill and Eustace when I read The Silver Chair. But it’s not like I feel uninvested in the characters per se when I read The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Really, I think they’re equal in their different ways but, alas, I could only vote for one and I felt more like voting for The Silver Chair.
Hello. My personal most-favorite-to-least-favorite list hasn’t changed much since I was a kid:
#1 The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
#2 The Silver Chair
#3 The Magician’s Nephew
#4 Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia
#5 The Horse and His Boy
#6 The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
#7 The Last Battle
Thank you. Have a good day!
Magician’s Nephew #1 for sure. I love me a good backstory; and the Wood Between the Worlds is a wonderful idea. There’s so much I still want to know about Charn, but never will (by design). In some ways Lewis’s attempt at what Drout calls Tolkien’s textual ruins.
