Dawn Treader Plot Details!

ChristianityToday has posted an article about the “Narnia Summit” that was held last week, where Walden Media showed footage and walked through the entire script with Christian leaders, Lewis experts, and fan sites like NarniaWeb and NarniaFans. (Read Tirian’s report here)

It is definitly worth reading the entire article, but here are some highlights that will get everyone talking:

The Ending:

Kathy Keller: “I’m glad the final interaction between Aslan and Lucy was there in its unadulterated entirety, because I consider that the pinnacle of the entire seven books.”

I have spoken with Tirian, and he confirmed that the line “there I have another name” is in the film! This is something NarniaWebbers have been concerned about for some time. Rejoice!

The Undragoning:

Keller says she learned that writers originally wanted Eustace, still in dragon form, to fight a sea monster and “earn” his return to human form. But she says Flaherty, a committed Christian, “put them straight that you don’t earn grace, you receive it once you are humbled and aware of your need.”

Tirian also confirmed that, in the film, we will see Aslan ripping the dragon skin off of Eustace! If you have not read the book, you are probably incredibly confused right now. If you have… rejoice again!

And now for the big spoiler:

“I was less than enthusiastic about the imposition of an invented quest to recover the seven swords of the seven lords to undo some evil magic of a new witch,” [Keller] said. “It is a fairly innocuous addition, but as a purist I would have been happier without it.”

Tirian confirmed the bit about the seven swords, but added: “I haven’t seen any evidence of a new witch being added to this story.”

There is sure to be both positive and negative reactions to these spoilers, but it seems that just about everyone in attendance, even those that disliked the first two films, was generally very happy with what they saw and heard.

Thanks to Icarus for the tip!

UPDATE: There was a good deal of confusion due to the line about a witch being in the film. And while both Tirian and Specter from NarniaFans denied it, it was thought that perhaps they weren’t present when the information was given.

However, ChristianityToday released this statement today which puts any confusion to rest. “CT has since learned from Walden that the ‘new witch’ is not in the final version of the film, but was scrapped during script discussions.” So there you go, no witch!

Thanks PrincessMia241 and Narnialover101 for the heads-up!

I just hope that they put Edmund and Eustace talking to each other after Eustace gets turned back to a human in the movie. I just love that part. They have to put it in! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. yeswelovenarnia says:

YES!!! I am glad they have Eustace's undragoning the way it was in the book!!!!!!!!

    • Hope in the Lord says:

I'm glad too:D but what about Edmund, and Eustace near the end. All I hear is Lucy. Ooh, I wish it was out already I'm getting impatient.

      • NarniaWarrior says:

It sounds like a great ending…let's look beyond the Characters and the look to the message in the storyline of the book and for us today…if we had not GRACE and REDEMPTION what would we have…LLA

Hey! I love it when Christians post on Narniaweb. I'm a Jesusfan too! And I'm SOOOOO glad for these AWESOME spoilers! I hope they have the Edmund/Eustace talk when Edmund finds Eustace as a human again when he's on night guarding. And I'm glad that They have the Aslan and Eustace/dragon thing. Oh, and also the Lucy/Aslan thing. I really hope they do the part where she reads the magical book perfectly. I've always loved that part. AAAHHHH!!!!!! I CAN'T WAIT 4 THE MOVIE!!!!!!!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Lyle says:

Im probobly on the outs here… but I'm an Athiest. And I LOVE THE NARNIA BOOKS (and I have the DVD and BlueRay and Movie Companion Books). I have read all books several times since I was six (I am now twenty-seven) and my favourite being Siliver Chair, Last Battle and Magician's Nephew. While I was raised a Protestant and my family and friends practice it, the Narnia series can be enjoyed by anyone of any faith, or lack there of. CS Lewis was a genious and the series will definitely live forever thanks to it's compelling story and great morals.

      • WilliamMoseleyandSkandarcrush! says:

What do you believe in, Lyle? (respectively)

      • SavedByGrace says:

Yeah! I'm so happy that they are sticking to the book so far.

    • Thessur says:

Thank goodness! If they couldn't even get that right I was going to scream and possibly write some sort of enraged protest.

  3. pselpevensie says:

that's so cool that we're going to see Eustace's de-dragoning. that's always been one of my favorite parts in the book.
but whats up with the " undo some evil magic of a new witch"? they can't add avillian. there isn't any villians in dawn treader and if they ad one the whole plot of the book will be messed up!

  4. narniafan#1 says:

I was sure they would leave out Aslan's line "there I have another name". I am so ecstatic that it will stay!!! I'm also glad they're leaving the undragoning the way it's supposed to be. Not too thrilled with the sub-plot about the swords. I guess so long as it doesn't outweigh the main plot, it'll be alright. Fingers crossed!

    • Ariel_of_Narnia says:

The whole "I have another name" line was the highlight of the whole report for me! I'm so happy it's in because VDT wouldn't be VDT without it!

      • Narnia&The_North says:

Me too! I really didn't think they would leave those parts in! Now I really can't wait for VoDT to come out!!

  5. sirsimon says:

I think the swords bit will be alright, they have to find the lords to find the swords (hey that matches) About the witch, Tirian said there's no witch and if there was, HAVE YOU GUYS HEARD OF THE LADY OF THE GREEN KIRDLE!??!

Hurray about the undragoning bit, that's going to be wicked, and I love that the line is still in.

With this and the report a week ago of the beautiful footage, we can all relax, this film will be amazing.

    • WilliamMoseleyandSkandarcrush! says:

Is that in the leaked script? I hated that stupid thing. It crushed my heart!

    • High Queene ShellyBelly says:

I agree, i like the idea of the swords, as it is a visual aid to portraying the book's quest in a visual medium-a movie. plus, remember ,the books are written in the traditional fairy tale format, which is intentionally sparse and sketchy to allow kids imaginations to develop and fill in the blanks. When you are trying to develop a 2 hour movie script which can also appeal to adults from a fairytale, you need to flesh out the plotlines more, not to mention portray internal motivations in a visual way. so im cool with the idea, as long as it stays true to cs lewis's intent.

  6. Reepicheep775 says:

Firstly: WHAT IS THE FREAKING LADY OF THE GREEN KIRTLE DOING HERE?! HER PLACE IS SILVER CHAIR NOT HERE!!!
That said, I was very pleased at the impression I got from the article. It sounds like the film-makers have a good idea of how the film should be (the un-dragoning of Eustace and "There I have another name"!!)

    • Mark Sommer says:

Read the comments above. Tirian says there is no witch, Green or otherwise. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • sirsimon says:

sorry if i scared ya, there will be no witch after all, summin this up with the report of the clips, this film will bloody rock!

    • High Queene ShellyBelly says:

they probably were tinkering with the idea of providing continuity between movies. Its more difficult with narnia ( more so than LOTR or star wars) because you lose major characters as the books and movies go along. They may have been concerned that there are so few characters that go on to silver chair. they like the idea of a built in audience and having more major characters follow into the next movie would help market the next movie.

  7. NarnianElf says:

YAY *jumps in the air* *runs around the house in unfathomable joy* *cant stop grinning from ear to ear* THIS IS THE BEST NEWS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. I think its awesome that they are having that quest for their swords… I think its a great idea!

    • Ariel_of_Narnia says:

But why… swords? Why not the men themselves? That's what I want to know.

      • NarnianElf says:

Well, I like it because it adds some depth.

      • Talking Rat says:

I agree– I think having to find the swords makes the purpose more superficial. Going out simply to find the men showed respect and gratitude for their loyalty to his father, a concern for those who still might be alive, and a spirit of adventure.
In my opinion, adding this sword thing takes away a lot from those. Of course, part of that might be a problem with our culture, not with the moviemakers themselves– maybe a modern audience wouldn't "get" the motivations that sent them out in the book.

      • narniafan4ever โ™ฅ says:

        Interesting last point, TalkingRat. ๐Ÿ˜›

      • tenthofthatname says:

"Going out simply to find the men showed respect and gratitude for their loyalty to his father, a concern for those who still might be alive, and a spirit of adventure."

I understand this so much and agree. I would rather have the witch's connection as a continuity bridge to The Silver Chair or no sword quest at all. Just a mysterious sword quest diminishes the value of the Lords themselves as characters associated with Caspian's family, although we might see the attitude in the story shift when Caspian meets Bern. I always felt Lord Bern portrayed the human connection between the lost Lords and Caspian's father as well as Caspian himself best.

  10. wolfloversk says:

Happiness…yay does this mean we're definitely getting the lamb-lion scene?

    • Ariel_of_Narnia says:

That's the other part I want. I'd love to see Aslan-as-the-lamb. one of my favourite parts

      • decarus says:

Yeah, i have never liked the lion into a lamb part. I have always thought it was too obvious of a connection to Christianity. I hope it is cut.

      • tenthofthatname says:

I am in agreement with decarus. The lamb scene is a bit too obvious in its Christian imagery for my taste. On the other hand someone unfamiliar with Christian symbolism may not think twice about a lamb, they may consider it just another one of Aslan's many transformations, and he's eating fish only because they're by the sea.

      • 220chrisTian says:

@decarus / tenth: what's wrong with the lamb-to-lion scene? What's wrong with its being explicitly Christian? Why try to take out what Lewis intentionally put in? Neither of you seems to understand the theological depth of this scene.

      • tenthofthatname says:

220chrisTian: Only people familiar with Christian symbolism would think there's theological depth in that scene. That's why I don't think it hurts to keep the scene in the movie, because it only feels explicit when you know Christian symbolism. To anyone else, the lamb is just another shape Aslan can take, no different from an albatross or a house cat. But I personally can do without the lamb scene, I much prefer the subtlety of "There I have another name." It sends a message that can be felt by Christians and non-Christians alike.

      • decarus says:

I think that Christianity is less explicit then that. You can believe it or not. God doesn't take away the choice and yet i think this is the only place where i would consider that the Chronicles of Narnia make an explicit connection to Christianity. You can't take it to mean that it has a connection to anything else. I completely agree that there are a lot more connection to Christianity throughout the entire series, but this one could only connect to Christianity. It just seems to obvious.

Though i guess like tenthofthatname says i may only see it as obvious because i know the connection and the average person won't. Either way, i've never liked it and really if there is one thing in all the books that i don't like that is okay. I just like the less obvious of 'there i have another name'. Christianity isn't obvious. It doesn't take away the choice. I hope that the lion to lamb is cut, but the line is great and i hope it is in.

  11. Long Live King Skandar says:

Hey, sounds great! It seems like the important principles and concepts (redemption, grace, etc.) were kept in the story. About the witch thing, I won't get too worried as long as the PERSONALITIES of the characters aren't changed drastically. (Peter in PC? Anyone?) If the new witch is indeed included, then that just shows what Hollywood tends to think: "any good adventure story needs a good villain," or something. I can live with that.

    • narniafan4ever โ™ฅ says:

Ya, I agree. I wish they hadn't changed Peter's personality so much! That got me a little irritated….haha. Oh well. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Ariel_of_Narnia says:

I hated the way they ruined Peter! Second to Aslan, he's my favourite character in the whole series! I hate it when moviemakers take my favourites and totally butcher them (even if the way they did him is understandable).

Good to see some fellows with sense putting this film together.
I was ready to resign myself to the enevitable, and wait for this to turn into just another series of adventure tales.
Thankfully the introduction of another witch was scrapped. As for the Green one,(who will remain nameless here), any addition of this character will only muddle the existing story. Not to mention confuse the next one, should it follow.

  18. Eden says:

Oh, wow, I am so so SOOO happy that they kept the line from the Aslan/Lucy talk. *sighs contentedly* I could die from happiness right now, because of that and the Eustace/Aslan part that they kept.

I just wonder how they'll do Eustace's undragoning. It will be a tricky scene to do. I mean it works well in the book, but I wonder how they'll interpret it in the movie? And I wonder if Aslan will turn into a lamb at the end? And I wonder if they'll have Lucy pray to him when they're at the Dark Island, when he comes as and Albatross?
Well anyway, I can't wait for the movie!!!

The greatest strength of Narnia is its broad appeal to Christians and non-Christians alike. When a non-Christian gets the moral of the story without having to know Christ to understand a principle of grace, you know the story is a powerful one.

      • 220chrisTian says:

@tenth: the article makes it clear that Apted didn't "get" the message of the book, i.e. grace, without help from Christian and Walden Media Prez Michael Flaherty. He had to drill it into everyone, for a solid day, what grace really is. Without him, Apted and others would probably have shown Eustace earning his undragoning. ๐Ÿ˜›

I still can't figure out how the Seven Swords actually work…As it has nothing concerning the Witch now. What such weird collection could possibly do?

  40. farsight1 says:

    HOORAY! THE WITCH IS DEAD!

Ok, now I'm 100% optimistic about this movie.

  41. JadistarkilleR says:

ok so witch/ snake cave/ malevolent spirit is gone. question is what will they use as a lead off to Silver Chair? sometimes they scrap something that initially prove controversial only to replace it with something worse. i'm hoping this is not the case, because frankly i dont want to think what they came up with to replace the evil witch/ snake cave.

they're not actually gonna have Rillian born at the end of the film are they? because other than Eustace, nothing else really links VODT to SC. Caspian doesnt really count because he's hardly there, although his part is pretty significant at the end.

    • tenthofthatname says:

This is my question as well. Continuity is the reason for many of the changes in the films and continuity is what keeps this series moving. For most book readers today, you can easily pick up The Silver Chair, but for movie goers the anticipation of waiting at least a year is going to build up expectations. That combined with book purists ("The Narnia Police" as an article states!) seems like the bar keeps getting raised for each successive film. My encouragement and enthusiasm is with the production, give us The Silver Chair!

  42. Aslan1982 says:

I remember Ben Barnes saying there was links to the The Silver Chair in this new movie. If the Lady of the Green Kirtle is not in the new Voyage of the Dawn Treader film then what is Ben Barnes referring too. What is going to be the point of collecting all these swords then? It sounded like a very good idea, shame it might have been cut.

  43. Paul T P says:

Well that sounds excellent, I had been hoping that they would keep the 'another name' and 'un-dragoning' portions in but to be honest I thought it would be a rather slim chance- good to see folks are prepared to stand up for what makes the Narnia books what they are, and that now people seem prepared to listen to them! Praise God!

    • NarniaNerd says:

I agree with you! Praise God that they kept those IMPORTANT elements of the story. It's really exciting. I'm just so excited!!! I'm bursting with excitement.

      okay, calming down…

  44. NarniaNerd says:

YAY!!! No witch. Omigosh, I am so excited about this film!!! I don't think I will be disappointed by this one. ๐Ÿ˜€

  45. Phoenix says:

Awesome! It looks like the film is coming together the way we would like it too…

  46. Cithea says:

I am SOOOOOOOOOOO happy they are going to leave the line in! I'm happy times 10! ๐Ÿ™‚

  47. Christian says:

I guess this means everything we heard before from the cast and crew about a "battle" has been scrapped? Hmm… I'm still a skeptic, though I'm glad they're keeping that "other name" line.

I totally disagree with the article when it talked about how the battle in LWW threw everything off. Imagine how boring that scene would've been if it was just Lucy, Susan and Aslan, and then they'd turn up on the battlefield, see all the carnage, and the audience would say "What in the world?!?" Yeah… books and movies are not the same.

    • Starlily says:

Yeah, I didn't mind the battle in LWW. It didn't bother me at all. But everyone has their own opinion. What bothers me might not bother someone else, and vise-versa.
(But I also have to disagree with the article, because I liked to see the rhinos fighting in the battle ๐Ÿ˜› )

    • Puddleglum says:

Though I generally like the idea of being faithful to the books, I enjoyed the battle scene in LWW. Not for the battle itself, but because of the final scene where Peter, even motivated by seening Edmund fall to the witch, cannot defeat her. Instead it is only Aslan who can ultimatly do so. How different from other adventure/action films we see, where a hero in similer circumstances emerges victorious on their own.

  48. QueenLanitheHyper says:

    Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy sounds sweet!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  49. The Great and Fearless Pug says:

What was that toward the end? "Although I don't agree with some of the things they are doing, so far they seem to be doing pretty well." That leaves me a little nervous. Of course, they were also talking negatively about the ressurection and the battle being intermingled together, which I thought was fine. In which case, I think it's going to turn out great! I wish it was here already!

  50. Aslanisthebest says:

How relieving that there isn't going to be a witch!

  51. Liberty Hoffman says:

YAY!!!!! I am SO happy! I knew everything would turn out alright! I am so glad to hear about everything! awesome! :D:D:D:D:D

  52. terebinthiangirl says:

yeah!!!! i'm so glad they "scrapped" the new witch part! that would have ruined the whole movie

  53. Eliseo says:

maybe the "mixing of other Narnia books" isnt necessarily a reference to the Silver Chair, but of the Horse and His Boy, seeing as how some Indian actors have been cast as Calormene abassadors.

    • tenthofthatname says:

I was considering this too, but I'm stumped as to what that element would be plotwise since HHB happened so long ago and we know Aravis joined Archenland instead, unless the reference is strictly stylistic.

  54. RumbleBuffinTheStrong says:

    wow not bad.

  55. GlimGlum says:

Greatly encouraged by this news. This will help VDT's success(IMHO) and hopefully open the door for The Silver Chair.
    Sail on VDT! ๐Ÿ™‚

  56. Mirima Rosetrader says:

Wow this is so exciting! Now we are getting some real news! I am so glad they are having Aslan say "there I have another name" because I love that line and I love that they are having him rip the skin off Eustace SO psyched about seeing that! I hope they don't add the witch, but if they do I'll have to see if I like her before I make my opinion. Well great news! Thank you Tirian for hunting for those confirmations! Long live Aslan and Sail on VDT!

  57. NarniaWarrior says:

    Yea….no witch !!!

  58. 4signs(rpt) says:

Jollification! I hope he's right about people who disliked the previous films being ok with this one. There's just too much stuff that I couldn't hack in the first two… and I still long for a Narnia movie that I can really let my guard down and enjoy. I'm so glad we lost the witch. That plot device is getting old anyway since they brought the WW back (however briefly) for PC. And explicitly Christian scenes from the book left unaltered in the movie??? Yessss! ๐Ÿ˜€

  59. cuppycakesrach says:

Awesome! super excited!! cant wait for the movie to come out… i don't think that the sword thing is that bad of an idea .. it could work lol.. oh well i'm just excited! woot woot! lol
