Advice: Auditioning For the Role of Jill Pole

Since the release of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, we at NarniaWeb have received almost daily inquiries about auditioning for the role of Jill Pole in The Silver Chair. After the release of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, these inquiries have risen to almost unbelievable levels. We wanted to take this opportunity to give some information about the film industry and answer the questions that folks may have about how to acquire a role.

Pre-Production and Greenlighting

Before casting begins for a film, there are several steps that take place. A script is written (or at least begun), the story is pitched to the studio, and the studio then “greenlights” the film, which means that the production is formally approved and financed. After the film is greenlit, it then enters pre-production, during which the script is finalized and plans are made for the actual shooting of the film. It is during this pre-production stage that casting is done.

Casting and Auditions

The casting process for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was somewhat unique in that casting director Pippa Hall held many public auditions when searching for the four Pevensie children. These auditions were generally held at schools around the UK, with children from the drama clubs being invited to attend. This is not typical, though, and usually a casting director will work directly with agents and industry contacts to come up with a list of potential actors to fill a specific role. Several actors are given auditions and the director and producers together decide which one will best play the part. This is the way that Will Poulter was cast for the role of Eustace.

Occasionally there will be open auditions for extras at a film location shoot. When that information becomes available we always post it at NarniaWeb.

Silver Chair Status

The future of the Narnia movies depends on the box office results for each film. If The Voyage of the Dawn Treader doesn’t do well enough in theaters, it is likely that there will not be any further Narnia films. If it is successful (and no one is sure exactly what the threshold of success is in the eyes of the studio), then Walden and Fox will likely move forward and attempt to get another Narnia film greenlit.

In interviews the producers have mentioned that they are considering The Silver Chair as well as The Magician’s Nephew for the next film. This could mean that The Silver Chair would be skipped or passed over temporarily, or that both films could be made at the same time. There are any number of possibilities, but the reality is that the future of the franchise and The Silver Chair is very much in limbo right now. It also goes without saying that production for The Silver Chair has not been greenlit and is not currently looking for any actors for the simple reason that there is no production.

Advice

If you are interested in auditioning for the role of Jill Pole or any other character in a Narnia film, the best advice that we can give is to 1) get involved with a local drama group to hone your skills and 2) hire an agent who can acquire an audition for you with the casting director when the time comes. There likely won’t be any public auditions. This is simply the way that Hollywood works.

Another question that we are often asked is about what the producers are looking for. Again, since there are no producers and no production (yet), we have no idea. During the casting process for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Pippa Hall was quoted as saying that she felt that there were so many brilliant British actors that there was no need to look for someone who could “fake” a British accent. So our expectation is that the producers would probably look to the UK first to fill the role of Jill Pole.

Conclusion

To sum this all up, The Silver Chair has not yet been greenlit so there are no roles yet to be filled. If you are interested in auditioning for a role when one becomes available, we recommend that you hire an agent who can acquire an audition for you when the time comes. Good luck!

OMG, Princess Jen, you write? I do too! I've written a short story about fairies and a unicorn, and one about a griffin, and I plan to write a long one with elves and dragons. I am so gonna create a blog. I want to talk with you and Queen E and Skandar the Great and The Other Pevensie Girl more!

  2. Gem says:

Yes that's true, they have nailed every role so far. At least as far as the children go. So we really shouldn't be worrying as much as we all are, but still…

  3. Jag says:

Me and my sister met skander walking through a busy shopping centre on the Gold Coast when they were here (australia) filming, we got a photo with him and he was really nice to us and asked us how we were n stuff! And my sister got all mushy cause he had his arm up against hers when our dad was taking the photo… So now i joke to her about her boyfriend Skandy Candy! Haha

  4. Edmund's Queen says:

I have an announcement: 12 Year Olds Are Welcome into NTC (Narnian Teen Club). You're almost there and twelve year olds are wonderful people. (This is okay with you, right vice president Elizabeth?)

  5. Gem says:

I think you're a bit too young for Jill, and Polly and Aravis don't look like what you do. But don't give up! I always though of Jill as having short light brown hair with bangs, so get a haircut and maybe you'd have a shot! ^_^

  6. Gem says:

She's too Hollywood. That would NOT work as Jill, everyone knows that!

  7. Edmund's Queen says:

LOL Princess Jen! I quote the movies all the time too. It seriously is only kissing paper. NBD. Now if it was his shoe we were kissing, that'd be another story. And I wouldn't kiss him in real life. Not unless he like asked me out and I really liked him and we became close. And the chances of that are like one in a million.

  8. Gem says:

Nesselphie- I think your age isn't something to worry about, although they might look for someone a little younger, more around 15 or so. But if you're British and interested, than there's no reason you can't try. As long as you have brown hair, I'm saying go for it!

  9. Queen Elizabeth says:

You could write about all of us and our love for Narnia and how it has affected our lives 🙂 Like, I didn't want to be a director until I saw Andrew Adamson.

  10. Queen Elizabeth says:

Yes. I think 12 is a muture enough age to join the club 🙂 But let's keep it at that now lol 🙂

  11. Gem says:

I guess you could say she's a favorite, but I think it's more that she is the next available young female role and since there are millions of teenage girls who are insane fans of Narnia, either the books or the movies or both…well, you get the idea.

  12. Edmund's Queen says:

It is my dream to be in a fantasy movie. To be in Narnia would be exhilarating. I wonder just how many other girls there are out there preparing to be Jill. And only one of them will be chosen. I'm probably not experienced enough, but I am only a year younger than Will P. That's about the age they'd be looking for, right?

  13. Queen Elizabeth says:

I love that quote! Funny story: I was watching PC with my dad the other day and when Ed said that my dad was like "Is he gay?" And I'm like. "WHAT NO!." Then my dad said, "Well he is mad that Susan kissed that long haired guy, and he does where a scarf and carry a purse."

    And I said, "IT"S A SATCHEL!!!!" lol 🙂

  14. Edmund's Queen says:

But then by the time they'd make SC, Will would be way too old, like in his twenties. They have to finish up all the Eustace stuff first, because they can't get another Eustace. Will Poulter is the one and only Eustace.

  15. Gavin P says:

Well, some good advice would to be when you audition, in the theory that you will have to have prepared a monologue, do not make the mistake of choosing an excerpt from the book that your character says. If you don't do very good in that part, chances are you won't get the position. What I mean by, "KNOW THE CHARACTER YOU WANT TO AUDITION FOR INSIDE AND OUT!!!" is that you should know the personality, situation, ect. of your character, and choose a monologue that has a similar character, with a possibly similar situation. Ultimatly be creative, make the people you are auditioning for intrigued by you! =)

  16. Cat1234 says:

Thank you so so so much for the advise 🙂

  17. Queen Elizabeth says:

QUESTION FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN THE UK:
Do you guys ever try to do an American accent. I think English accents are amazing sounding. One time I tried it out at the mall and people actually thought I was British lol. but do you guys ever try to sound American? 🙂

  18. Princess Jennifer says:

Yeah, you are right. That means they will probably do the Last Battle after SC Because Eustace is in that book. Do you think I would be an ok Aravis ?

  19. Princess Jennifer says:

    I have long brown hair !!! And a good british accent !!! But, I"m only, 12. ……..Sigh………

  20. Princess Jennifer says:

right !! I bet you are one of the top 5, if you don"t get picked !!! I hope you get picked !!! I would even like to be in a small role…

  21. The Drama Queen says:

I would LOVE to play Jill Pole as well as all the other girls on this site. lol. Though I am american, when our school had auditions for Pride and Prejudice, I was told I had a perfect british accent by the director. I have been involved in acting classes and theatre program for 2 1/2 years, and I enjoy acting SO MUCH. I turn 16 this july, but people tell me I look 13, so that might work to my advantage for once!! I even told my mom that when auditions come around, I am auditioning no matter WHAT. Good Luck to everybody out there!! God Bless!!

  22. the other Pevensie girl says:

Unless, of course, I HAD married Edmund, in which case, my last name would be Pevensie.. hence username. ;D Unfortunately, I haven't quite accomplished that feat yet, so I suppose for now it is simply a creative username, haha. Edmund's Queen – Ooo! You write songs too? 😀 I wrote one based off of VDT, but for some reason they found that some famous country singer who is actually a recording artist was more apt for the credits song.. sheeeesh.. (x It would be so amazing to have a song in a film, especially a Narnia one!

  23. Princess Jennifer says:

To Queen Elizabeth : That is funny !! So now what does your dad think of Skandar ?!?! Ha Ha !!

  24. Princess Jennifer says:

I do have bangs by the way , Thanks !! Maybe I could get a small role or when they make HHB I will be old enough. Thanks again !!

  25. Princess Jennifer says:

Oh……… Thank you !!! Thank you !!! Thank you !!! Yahoo !!!!! I would hug you if I could !!!! Thank you so much !!!! I will be mature and I will give my alligence to the club !!!!!! Thanks!!!!

  26. The Drama Queen says:

I have shoulder length light brown hair, and bangs!! Is Polly's hair supposed to be straight, wavy or curly? what about eye color…height? I would guess the actress they choose for Jill should be shorter then Will by like and inch or two… just my opinion.

  27. Princess Jennifer says:

Seriously ? Oh COOL !!!!! I am beginning to write more too !!! I have already wrote a whole book !!! It is about a horse and a girl. I wrote it when I was 11. I am 12 now. You should publish your book !!! My book isn"t published yet.

  28. Gem says:

Princess Jennifer- you're welcome. Wait, what part do you want in HHB?
Well, The Drama Queen, I always thought of Jill as having short light brown hair with bangs and being tall and skinny/bony. Maybe about Eustace's height. And I think Polly should have blonde hair. I don't really think eye colors matter that much, although I could see Jill with a light brown or green and Polly with blue. And I would assume Polly to be average, maybe on the shorter side.

  29. Gem says:

Seriously, what is wrong with your dad?! Just kidding. But for real, lots of guys, at least back in 1940s England, had bags and wore scarfs. Wow, that's hilarious, and kind of sad too.

  30. Gem says:

By the way, Princess Jennifer, Will P. is 5-9, 5-10.

  31. The Drama Queen says:

Wow, this description keeps sounding more like me every time. I have short light brown hair with bangs as I said before, and I have eyes that change from a bright green to a hazel. I am DEFINITELY auditioning to be Jill, as I already look like how people think she should!! God Bless!!

  32. Queen Elizabeth says:

I've written a few books too 🙂 A series of books about a girl group of secret agents, and a book that takes place in the times of kings and queens 🙂

  33. Not Of This World says:

I wish I could play as anyone in the Movies. I don't care who. It would just be fun to play anyone 🙂

  34. Not Of This World says:

When ever I go to the store I always talk in an English accent. I think I get people sometimes 🙂

  35. Princess Jennifer says:

    Me too !!!

  36. Princess Jennifer says:

To Queen Elizabeth : That is funny about the mall !!! I will try that next time I go into a store !!!!

  37. Princess Jennifer says:

Why would that be sad ? You"ve lost me

  38. Princess Jennifer says:

To Gem : I would like to be Aravis. Since I know alot about horses and my skin is sort of tanned since I live in Kansas.

  39. Princess Jennifer says:

Are they published yet ? Even if not, that is so cool !!!!

  40. Edmund's Queen says:

Yeah, I'd never considered you would already be married to him, lol. I migh could marry Edmund, but not Skandar. I read on several websites that he's an atheist. I'm a Christian, so that would not work. 🙁

  41. Edmund's Queen says:

OOOOHHHH MY GOSH! You are SO lucky! Randomly running into Skandar at the mall!? That's like something I would dream of! And you sister…his arm was against hers?! WOW!

  42. Edmund's Queen says:

I have a friend who has published a book of poetry. It's called "Take Time…" You two should check it out. You can get it at Amazon and Barnes and Noble.com. It is so cool to talk to people who share my interests! I might make a good director, Queen Elizabeth, since I'm the oldest child in my family and therefore good at bossing around. XD

  43. Edmund's Queen says:

Group web hug everyone! LOL 🙂

  44. Edmund's Queen says:

You are so encouraging! You are like my angelic little Narnian sister!

  45. Edmund's Queen says:

IDK, do you have dark hair?

  46. the other Pevensie girl says:

Yeah, I did too, that's a huge bummer since he seems like a pretty nice guy! D: I consolidated by making a pact to pray for him every day last August. I'm really holding out for him to come to Christ someday! (:

  47. Princess Jennifer says:

    Yes, Dark brown hair.

  48. Princess Jennifer says:

And you are like my angel like bigger sister !!! I wish we could meet !! Better yet, I wish we were sisters !!

  49. Princess Jennifer says:

lol !!! Big Web Hug indeed !! lol !! Thank you so much !!!

  50. Yeah, once upon a time I wanted to be a centaur in a Narnia movie too. That was until I found out that in LWW, most of the centaurs had to be on the makeup chair by 3:30 am to get their prosthetic ears glued on and all that sort of stuff. Not exactly my cup of tea.
But good luck to you! If you're a morning person, and posess a lot of patience, you'll be a great centaur!

  51. kasey says:

i am going to try as hard as i can i have a good english accent . so i hope i can at least be seen thanks !!!

  52. HighQueenofNarnia says:

No, sir, you would be perfect as Puddleglum. Simply because you would refuse to deviate from the character in the book, and that would make SC a lot more enjoyable. 😉

  53. Princess Jennifer says:

I am not British but I wanted to say that I think It"s funny how everyone in the mall thought you were british. I will do that next time I go to a store !!! lol !!!

  54. Queen Elizabeth says:

    *hugging the screen 🙂

  55. Queen Elizabeth says:

I'm the oldest in my family too! And no I haven't published any, just for school stuff. And I do like things being a certain way so that would make me a good director too 🙂

  56. Gem says:

Wow, Aravis from Kansas? Sorry, not sure if that would happen! I really think that they will get someone of Arabian descent or some other Middle Eastern country, I mean, that's what I always thought of Calormen, a very Middle Eastern-y culture and country.
Oh well, it's fun to dream though. I mean, I so want to be Jill, but I know that won't ever happen.

  57. Queen Elizabeth says:

    I will to 🙂

  58. Pepper Darcy says:

ha! (i'm laughing at myself) IF I had the fortune of being cast as Jill (I look young enough for it, people think I'm like anywhere from 12-16 even though I'm 21) I'd be such a stinkin' sucker… cuz I'd come here and see what people thought of me, and then I'd always come away crying… :'( Sigh… but oh well, I wish I could try, but unfortunately I'm not from UK. They'll choose someone really cute though! I'm sure! 🙂 And I'd really to NOT get out in a Hollywood atmosphere… that's not a great place to be, so I'm safe here! 🙂 God does know what He's doing by having me here 🙂 I'm safe in ignorance of some things going on out there 😉

Merry (early) Christmas all you Narniawebbers: this Peppermint Winter is so surgar sweet, what's December without Christmas Eve?

  59. Gem says:

That people would automatically write you off as gay just because you are wearing a scarf or carry a bag.

  60. Gem says:

Wow, yeah, 21 is probably a little old, considering that Will P. is like 17. Ha ha, oh well, maybe you could go for the Emeral Witch. Do you look anything like Tilda Swinton? ^_^
