Advice: Auditioning For the Role of Jill Pole

Since the release of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, we at NarniaWeb have received almost daily inquiries about auditioning for the role of Jill Pole in The Silver Chair. After the release of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, these inquiries have risen to almost unbelievable levels. We wanted to take this opportunity to give some information about the film industry and answer the questions that folks may have about how to acquire a role.

Pre-Production and Greenlighting

Before casting begins for a film, there are several steps that take place. A script is written (or at least begun), the story is pitched to the studio, and the studio then “greenlights” the film, which means that the production is formally approved and financed. After the film is greenlit, it then enters pre-production, during which the script is finalized and plans are made for the actual shooting of the film. It is during this pre-production stage that casting is done.

Casting and Auditions

The casting process for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was somewhat unique in that casting director Pippa Hall held many public auditions when searching for the four Pevensie children. These auditions were generally held at schools around the UK, with children from the drama clubs being invited to attend. This is not typical, though, and usually a casting director will work directly with agents and industry contacts to come up with a list of potential actors to fill a specific role. Several actors are given auditions and the director and producers together decide which one will best play the part. This is the way that Will Poulter was cast for the role of Eustace.

Occasionally there will be open auditions for extras at a film location shoot. When that information becomes available we always post it at NarniaWeb.

Silver Chair Status

The future of the Narnia movies depends on the box office results for each film. If The Voyage of the Dawn Treader doesn’t do well enough in theaters, it is likely that there will not be any further Narnia films. If it is successful (and no one is sure exactly what the threshold of success is in the eyes of the studio), then Walden and Fox will likely move forward and attempt to get another Narnia film greenlit.

In interviews the producers have mentioned that they are considering The Silver Chair as well as The Magician’s Nephew for the next film. This could mean that The Silver Chair would be skipped or passed over temporarily, or that both films could be made at the same time. There are any number of possibilities, but the reality is that the future of the franchise and The Silver Chair is very much in limbo right now. It also goes without saying that production for The Silver Chair has not been greenlit and is not currently looking for any actors for the simple reason that there is no production.

Advice

If you are interested in auditioning for the role of Jill Pole or any other character in a Narnia film, the best advice that we can give is to 1) get involved with a local drama group to hone your skills and 2) hire an agent who can acquire an audition for you with the casting director when the time comes. There likely won’t be any public auditions. This is simply the way that Hollywood works.

Another question that we are often asked is about what the producers are looking for. Again, since there are no producers and no production (yet), we have no idea. During the casting process for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Pippa Hall was quoted as saying that she felt that there were so many brilliant British actors that there was no need to look for someone who could “fake” a British accent. So our expectation is that the producers would probably look to the UK first to fill the role of Jill Pole.

Conclusion

To sum this all up, The Silver Chair has not yet been greenlit so there are no roles yet to be filled. If you are interested in auditioning for a role when one becomes available, we recommend that you hire an agent who can acquire an audition for you when the time comes. Good luck!

  4. Stedman says:

I hope they choose someone who looks like a normal schoolgirl whom you would expect to be bullied; and that her true beaty be shown in Narnia by Aslan. She needs a weakness (perhaps the reason she's bullied). Just look at the book and go from there to create her character. She needs to be the normal, ordinary schoolgirl whose dream actually comes true. Again, she should be a schoolgirl; not a proffesional actress. 😉

  5. Gem says:

I don't think that's logical at all to skip a book. And it really doesn't matter if you wouldn't watch HHB or don't like it, you're just one person thankfully. Sorry. Besides, they will stop making the movies before they skip one.

  6. Gem says:

Pepper Darcy- in LWW, the only kid who had read the books was Anna, it said so in the movie extra features. And to Olivia, sorry, I think you're a bit too young and too short. They will prolly look for someone around 15, after all Will P. is 17. And someone taller too. But I do think Jill should have brown hair and maybe brown eyes, so that's something good going for you. And Fan 4 Narnia, you actually sound like a better Polly than a Jill to me. You should try to go for her.

  7. Gem says:

Don't worry, Debbie, I think you are wrong!! ^_^
During Christmas weekend and the week after VDT will get lots of money and attention. Besides, VDT has been a hit overseas. I defintely think we have hope for at least SC.

  8. Gem says:

Hope you get an audition, and good luck! I love the fact that you have brown hair, cause I think most people see Jill with blonde hair, which I don't. I recommend you cut it shorter though and get bangs. That's always been my idea of Jill.

  9. Gem says:

Actually, Hannah, I think you have a much better shot at Polly than Jill. I think you look exactly like what Polly should, and since MN won't be made for a few more years, you will be the exact age they will look for with Polly, and ALSO you will have more time to practice your acting skills and British accent. Good luck!

  10. Gem says:

Hi to you too. Yeah hopefully for you the will make the movie within the next year or so, otherwise I think you'd be too old. ^_^
Oh well, we'll see what happens!

  11. Not Of This World says:

    Merry Christmas!!

  12. Yeah, if I even bothered to try, they would probably laugh at me! I'd make a terrible Jill Pole! Starting with the fact I can't act. Not to mention I hate acting. Plus I'd probably kick up a fight with the producers and scriptwriters if anything in the script was 'out of character'. Oh yeah, and there's that whole thing about me having a terrible memory! Pepper Darcy, you'd probably do a better job than me!
I would love to work on the Narnia movies, but I reckon the only thing I'd be able to do is hold up the chrome and grey scale spheres. Ha, I bet I'd even have trouble doing that!
Oh well, I can still support the movies with money and good reviews 🙂

  13. Edmund's Queen says:

I know what you mean about Twilight; I'm 16 and my mom won't even let me see it. I don't really want to anymore though. Being in a Narnia movie would probably be the biggest event of my life next to getting saved. Unfortunately, I don't have an agent, and have only a little experience acting. But if I keep working, maybe… Anyway, Merry Christmas!

  14. Jill_Pole says:

Well… seeing as I live on the other side of the world, I won't have a chance of getting Jill Pole…
I remember watching the old Narnia in the Library in Primary School, and I was so envious of the actors in it!

    BUT

From the example of the actors in the Narnia films, I have been motivated to follow my dream and start acting school
    HAPPY CHRISTMAS!!!

  15. Jill_Pole says:

sorry, that didnt answer your question!!!
I think funny stills from the movies would be a start
how will you get it to them?

  17. just jill says:

i think they should do silver chair then the las6t battle then go back and do the magicians nephew the the horse and his boy. Braden Woodburn i can't believe you don't like the horse and his boy, that's like my favorite Narnia book

  18. just jill says:

I'm 11 to and have medium length brown hair some drama expirience peaple say my imitation of a british accent is very good. i am 4 ft 10 and would LOVE to be jill pole

  19. The Drama Queen says:

I know what you mean, It would mean the world to me if I got the part of Jill because I LOVE Narnia, I LOVE acting, and I just think I would portray her well. Never give up on your dreams, and keep working as hard as you can to get an audition, and the best of luck to you!! All these girls on here saying "oh, my hair is the wrong color" or "I don't have an agent,so I won't get the part" they need to believe in themselves!! Because in my opinion NEVER is just REVEN spelled backwards. God Bless!!

  20. Pepper Darcy says:

seriously on the info about Anna reading the books? I read and heard from interviews that Georgie had before she was cast… I'm not discrediting what you are saying, Gem. I'm discrediting whoever got their stuff mixed up, because *someone* messed it up somewhere! 🙂 It's not you, but whoever else 🙂

But thanks for telling me that! 🙂

  21. Jana says:

    It s ok..I live in Czech republic….:-(

  22. Emilee says:

    Thanks for your support:)

  23. Emilee says:

Thank you(: I appreciate your comment, I have always seen Jill with brown hair too. Not just syaig that because I have brown hair. But I do have side bangs:) But thanks again for your support:)

  24. Emilee says:

Hey! I have an agent and an easy way to get one is look up close modeling/talent agents near to where you live. You will most likley have to send in some pictures of your self and set up a time for which you can meet! Most agents do not have sign up fees just when you book something they charge. I am hoping for the role of Jill too(: I wish you the best of luck!:)

  25. First of all, I don't get how you know all this, but I trust the that the Narnia movie makers know what they're doing. I too would like to see another movie if not all of them. At least I know that my family has spent alot of money on Narnia if they don't make enough money.

  26. Good luck. Now, if you make it, I can someday say, "I wished the actor of Jill Pole good luck when she was 16!"

  27. Cynical Narnia Fanboy says:

    I would recommend Saiorse Ronan…

  28. Gem says:

Oh well, maybe your right and they did all read the books, but I am 100% sure that they said Anna was the only one who read them in the extra features. Although I'm sure they all read them at some point, even if it wasn't before the film. Well, you're welcome! And thanks for not blaming me if I'm wrong!! ^_^

  29. Gem says:

Me too. I hope that Jill is a brunette, whether it's you or some other actor! xD

  30. Queen C The Gentle says:

Well I might send it to Georgie. Merry Christmas and thanks for the tip! Anyone else have any ideas?

  31. Emilee says:

Ha yes I hope so too:) I hope maybe I could play her but if not I hope the actress has brown hair(:

  32. Emilee says:

Sorry wrong comment:) But thank you greatly! Yes, you could say that and I could say you gave me support to go after my dream! Thanks alot!

  33. Emilee says:

Yes,I hope Jill is brunette too. I hope I could play her but wether or not I hope whoever gets it has brown hair!:)

  34. Emilee says:

Hello. My agent and I have been keeping tabs on when it comes out and when the additions do come out we will be the first to know, but guessing if the movie does get the green light possibly in about 5 months or so it really just depends on how the new movie does:) I wish you luck!=)

  35. Emily says:

I'm 16 years old and 5ft 5in. I have medium to long brown hair and brown eyes. My British accent is flawless and I have acting experience (no agent). I have always dreamed of acting in one of the Narnia films! I absolutely love the books and I think that it would be a lot of fun to play Jill Pole!

  36. narnian21 says:

Well in the first weekend alone it made over 100 million. And if it's at 185 million worldwide now (which doesn't include the foreign sales of this past week) and it's Christmas and new year coming up, I think VDT has a very good chance at reaching that goal and beyond

  37. yepilovenarnia says:

Pepper Darcy, i also love God, Owl City, and Narnia! Merry Christmas and God bless! Peppermint Winter rules!

  38. Pepper Darcy says:

Merry Christmas to you too! 🙂 Ohh yeah! Peppermint Winter rules! 🙂

  39. Gem says:

Ha ha, me too! I'd love to be Jill, even though I know I don't have a chance. I mean, except for brown hair, I have nothing they would look for. But I do hope you get a shot at it, it sounds like you've got some great experience.

  40. Gem says:

Oh my gosh, I do too!! Oh I haven't heard Peppermint Winter, I'll have to go listen to it.

  41. Emilee says:

Well you should atleast try I mean if you never try then you will never know.Even if you don't make it , it opens your eyes to more in the movie world. I hope I would get it I hae wanted this role since the first Narnia movie came out:)

  42. Cat1234 says:

How do you get an agent???

  43. Not Of This World says:

I'll be 14 in less then a month. And I'm not in any clubs. I would lick to wish everyone on NarniaWeb a Merry (belated) Christmas!

  44. Helena says:

Definatley trying out for this if the film goes ahead! Thanks narniaweb 😀

  45. Emilee says:

Find one near to where you live that way it is easier to meet up with them. Just go online and find one and you will probably have to send in photos and info about yourself and they will look over them and then decided if they wont to be yor agent or not.If so they will call you or get intouch with you. Then they will start booking stuff for you!:)Hope this helped.

  46. Edmund's Queen says:

    I agree! glumPuddle is great!

  47. Edmund's Queen says:

We can start wishing early Happy New Year's now! Did everyone have a good Christmas? I sure did. Queen Elizabeth, did you get your movie poster? Princess Jennifer, your tickets? I thought about y'all yesterday, wondering if you got what you wished for.

  48. Nesselphie says:

    hehe hopefully 🙂
I hope the auditions are soon, esp as i'm barely a month younger than Will P….
    xx

  49. Edmund's Queen says:

I wonder just how many girls there are out there praying for Skandar…
That's cool you wrote a VDT song. I have written three verses for Silver Chair, and it's coming along quite well.

  50. Edmund's Queen says:

It's so cool to see such dedicated Narnia fans, even as adults! I'm 16, and will likely remain a Narnian dreamer the rest of my life. 🙂

  51. Edmund's Queen says:

That's encouraging, Brother Eustace. Now that I think of it, though, hair color probably won't matter too much.

  52. the other Pevensie girl says:

I hope there are tons! It'd be so cool if there was an army of prayer warriors. (: Oh, that sounds neat! Do you sing/play an instrument too, or just write?

  53. Edmund's Queen says:

Good luck! 😉 We'll have to keep our eyes open for when the auditions will be. Let's hope VDT does well, so they WILL make SC.

  54. Edmund's Queen says:

Peter Jackson cast Elijah Wood in LOTR even though he had to fake the accent.

  55. Edmund's Queen says:

Queen Elizabeth: LOL about your dad! "that long haired guy" ha ha! I had a dream with Caspian in it the night before last. (sigh…) I know I'm always going on about Edmund, but Caspian and Peter are sooo gorgeous too. Narnian Kings Rule! (pun intended) 😉

  56. Edmund's Queen says:

    What mall thing?

  57. Edmund's Queen says:

    That does sound cool. 🙂
I play the mandolin and guitar, and am teaching myself piano. I usually use guitar when songwriting though. I want to get a harp, 'cause it seems more Narnian. Do you play any instruments?

  58. Gem says:

Me too, Jill has always been my favorite of the girls ever since I first read the books and became a fan of them before the movies. But I don't think Jill Pole should be 6ft tall…that's me!! So you probably have a much better chance. But oh well, there's nothing wrong with hoping or dreaming, right? Besides, I don't want to be an actress as a career, so to get all serious about being in a film and then drop it after the chance is gone is stupid.

  59. Emilee says:

yes, Jill and Susan have always been my favorite(: But yes I understand what you are saying, but even if you didnt get the part Jill you could always try for other movies:) And yes I dont see Jill 6ft. either:) So maybe I will atleast get a call back:) Ive been an extra in a few movies but never a main character!
