Aslan, Shasta, and the Problem of Pain | Talking Beasts Flashback

This episode was originally published in April 2019.

To mark the 70th anniversary of The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis, we are re-posting our discussion of one of the memorable scenes in The Chronicles of Narnia: The meeting between Shasta and The Great Lion. In this chapter, “The Unwelcome Fellow Traveller,” Aslan gives meaning to the hardships Shasta has endured.

Looking forward to listening to this – I don’t think I was around on NarniaWeb during the first release. Will post my thoughts later!

Just a heads up; the link to Glumpuddle’s grandfather’s lecture is not active anymore. Can that be updated?

    Great episode!!

Aslan as the ‘Unwelcome Fellow Traveler’ for Shasta’s whole life was such a lightbulb moment for me! I always focused on this chapter, but seeing that idea applied to his entire journey makes the story feel even richer. There’s something really comforting about knowing there’s been guidance all along, even when we didn’t realize it.

I love how you connected Shasta’s sense of something ‘greater’ beyond the hills with his eventual discovery of his true identity. It’s a reminder that, deep down, we all have those moments where we sense there’s more to our lives than what we currently see. Shasta’s journey is such a great metaphor for that!

Will need to listen through the rest of The Horse and His Boy commentary now!

Completely unrelated note; will there be anymore ‘Stump a NarniaWebber’ segments for future seasons? I’ve missed them!

Thanks for sharing that story with your grandfather, GP.
