Narnia Sound Mixer Nina Rice on the Film’s ‘Huge Sonic Scope’

Narnia’s sound mixer Nina Rice has spoken of the film’s “huge sonic scope” in a new interview with the Irish Film and Television Network (IFTN).
“I have recently wrapped on the new Narnia film, The Magician’s Nephew. It was a truly magical journey working with Greta Gerwig and the crew. Stepping into the scale of Narnia with Greta and the incredible cast has been a career highlight. The sonic scope of this film is huge and working with Greta to capture the incredible performances is an honour. I am incredibly excited for the world to experience what we’ve created when it hits the cinemas.”
Nina Rice, Sound Mixer
In film-making, sound mixing is the post-production process whereby the audio captured on set is integrated with additional dialogue recorded in the studio, sound effects, and the music score, to create a single cohesive soundscape for the finished movie.
Rice’s comments would seem to suggest that her work on the film is already completed, and potentially hint that music-based scenes such as Aslan singing the world into creation will play a prominent part in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew.
Rice’s comments also echo those made by IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond who previously talked about the “unbelievably contemporary music” featured in the production, as well as comments made by composers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who have previously hinted at a somewhat unconventional take on creating the score.

nina rice probably has as good a view as Greta herself on the making of this movie. That includes the supposedly rock and roll score and the confirmed casting roles that we don’t know about. However the comments she made seemed to be about her personal journey in making the film, not the film itself.
One thing about Greta, is she loves a dream ballet, what’s more fitting than a lion singing a world into existence at the end of the second act of a film. Very- Singing in the Rain

“like a dream within a dream.” wink wink
Well, it sounds like everyone who has had a part in this project has only positive things to say (which I know is probably required but still). Hoping that it turns out well!
everytime i read something about the movie. i get more excited!!! i cant waaaaaaaait
217 days to go!!!
217 days ago was 18th September, 2025
I can’t wait! To be honest, I’m a bundle of nerves; I still can’t believe it!
I know right!!! So long since an adaptation and now were suddenly around 7 months away!!
Definitely a mixture of excitement and anxiety
I’m calling it… we’ll have a teaser by end of May.
Why so soon? I gear its too early for Netflix
Yes, but perhaps not too soon for IMAX?
“Netflix has committed to market the IMAX release like a typical theatrical tentpole movie” (Puck news)
@whitestag Hmmm. I gues we should take the average of the 2? Was Frankenstein in IMAX?
The trailer will play during a big family IMAX film , check the imax schedule and guess which of the releases will have the trailer, maybe something will pop up before the next IMAX investors call next week Thursday
by end of may we might get a title reveal or first poster. probably not a full teaser.
I dont mean to be a wet blanket, but i think netflix will keep things secret until june or july earliest. i hope im wrong though.
If I had to guess I would say it will come out in front of SuperGirl or the Minions Movie in early July. MAYBE Mandalorian and Grogu at the end of May if we are lucky.
I am the biggest Narnia fan I know and have been most of my life.
I can’t wait to NEVER see this. I am actively looking forward to not watching it and it failing financially.

100%. You’re spot on. I knew the moment that I heard Streep’s name get associated with this film–specifically, with Aslan–last year that this film series was going to be a barely veiled Trojan horse.
To those who might strongly disagree with or laugh at this perspective, I respectfully say that naivety, wishful thinking, and a lack of intuition are causing you to not see clearly.

it’s so sad that people are just complaining about it without even watching it! how can you criticize something you don’t even know?

Because it’s already been confirmed that it’s making drastic changes to the books that are very important. We know they have completely changed the time period for this movie which would completely change things for the next. And while I didn’t mind rock scores, it doesn’t seem that it should fit with these stories. The biggest issue is if Streep is really voicing Aslan, as that would change a major character and major theme, especially if that holds true for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. That’s what has really set people off against this film. Although that hasn’t been confirmed that’s who she is playing. It has been confirmed she is in the movie from one of the actresses, and from that statement it seemed like it might not be voice work. But it doesn’t completely debunk it either, and the voice of Aslan hasn’t been reported. So we have someone not tied to a character and a character without an actor attached. Although, I’ve seen voice actors get announced late in the post-production since that can be done later. But if this person has finished the sound mixing that would mean the voice work should be finished. I’m waiting to pass judgment until I see it, as I’d like to trust Greta. But if Meryl Streep is playing Aslan, this movie will fail big time.
Because we already know things that ruin the movie for some people. For some it might be the casting, for others the 1950s setting and everyone has the right to hate those. You’re free to be excited and enjoy the movie however it turns out but others have the right to be upset about things we’ve learned so far. You can’t force people to shut up just because their opinions make you uncomfortable. You’re not living in cotton wool, you live in a world, among people. Don’t expect them to put your personal comfort above the need to express their feelings in a matter like this.
To those who have been here from the start slowly piecing the news of what may be expected, we will all have to see the trailer and see the project for ourselves. For those who just slightly pop up to comment on only certain news out of whatever stress thus far, well … let just say these are not for the lighthearted so either way enjoy that news. Either way, how ever that is, it have been work with someone who understand the craft and reference of films in addition to doing the research for the author’s work so visually could expect 80s-90s dark fantasy. Anyway, count it down for the days.
What does she mean by sonic scope? The definition of sonic that pops up online for me is “denoting, relating to, or of the nature of sound or sound waves”. Does this mean the film will have “sci-fi” music?
Sonic just means sound. Therefore she’s simply saying that the film will have a diverse range of different sounds – whether that’s music, or sound effects, or just overall atmospherics, we don’t know, but its exciting to imagine what might be in store!
Thank you for explaining that to me! 🙂
Reading about this ‘huge sonic scope’ and ‘contemporary music’ only reinforces my fears. Nina Rice mentioning ‘incredible performances’ alongside the Meryl Streep rumors (and her confirmed scenes with Emma Mackey) suggests we are getting a ‘reimagined’ Aslan that fits a rock-and-roll aesthetic rather than Lewis’s Lion.
In The Last Battle, the Narnians were tricked because they wanted to believe a ‘new’ Aslan had come, ignoring the donkey’s ears poking out of the skin. A 1955 setting, a psychedelic rock score, and a non-traditional voice for Aslan aren’t just ‘creative choices’—they are the ears poking out of the skin. I won’t be waiting for the trailer to be sure; if this is the direction, I’ll be canceling my Netflix sub the day TUDUM drops. Who else is seeing the ‘whole picture’ here
I’d like to clarify my post a little. Given what we know about this movie, as lined out in the comment, we have a pretty clear picture of what the movie is going to be like, and it won’t be like Naria. I am asking those of you who are likeminded to join me in dropping their Netflix subscriptions on the day the trailer drops. We must make sure Netflix knows the reason and pray they learn from this incident.
I want to believe the best about this production, but I won’t watch it if they change too much
I just relistened to the Focus on the Family audio drama for MN. I am working on sketching my own personal adaptation. I think this is what we should all do. We should make our own versions to celebrate our love of Narnia.
I just re-listened to Focus on the Family Radio drama too. Those are wonderful. Absolutely love them!
LOL I’m good. I’ll wait and reserve judgment until I actually see the movie/trailer. You don’t get extra fan points for being a sensationalist…
