VDT Blog – “Diving Right In”

When it was proposed (or mandated) that Skandar and co-stars Will Poulter and
Georgie Henley don a wet suit to earn their scuba PADI (Professional Association of
Diving Instructors) certificate before filming commenced on “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” the teenage trio dove right in, you might say, to yet another adventure and challenge.

The third book in C.S. Lewis’ series begins when the two youngest Pevensies, along with their irritating cousin Eustace, are swallowed into a bedroom wall painting, which depicts a ship sailing on the high seas.

To create the effect of the bedroom flooding with water, the production’s mechanical SFX crew, under the direction of veteran movie magician Brian Cox, and working with Barry Robison’s and Ian Gracie’s crack art department and construction crew, duplicated the sound stage bedroom set on an elevated platform which was then dunked into the smaller of Warner Roadshow’s two exterior studio water tanks. The three actors were then instructed to swim out of the bedroom door and windows to the surface.

Weeks before their scenes were filmed, Keynes, Poulter and Henley underwent a three-day scuba diving course under the supervision of Aussie diving instructor Andrew Allen. The actors trained in a local swimming pool and at sea.

You can say they all took to the lessons like fish to water.

After a relatively short rehearsal period in the studio tanks, filming began on the bedroom water scenes in late July, the first week of production. A short time later, the three young actors dove into a second studio tank, to enact the moments where they surface in the ocean and are saved by Caspian and his crew aboard the Dawn Treader.

So it IS Caspian who saves the trio from drowning. Well, I'm glad! 🙂 Woohoo!

  2. WhiteRider says:

This is very cool, now I'm just waiting for the first trailer to come out!

  3. That was pretty detailed stuff, right there.

  4. I think Caspian's the one who saved them in the book, too.

  5. Talking Rat says:

Dunking the bedroom into the water, eh? That should be pretty cool… 🙂

  6. Liberty Hoffman says:

    this is SO cool!
playing games under 24 feet of water, eh? that's crazy! lol! 😀

  7. Shy Galadriel says:

Well, that's a change. Instead of them getting sucked the picture, everything but the room becomes Narnia… Sounds a bit like the tunnel in PC. Except in this case the room stays and everything else changes… Weird. Not sure how I like it. Can't wait for the movie to come out!!!!!!!

  8. AndreyaofNarnia says:

Hmm. Well it seems that they're staying pretty close to the book. Can't wait for a trailer!!

  9. narniafan#1 says:

Sounds like it'd be a lot of fun to learn to scuba dive! Nice to get a little detail too.

  10. I_LiVe_iN_NarNia:P says:

Paper, scissors, rock!? Isn't it rock, paper, scissors? 😛 Sounds cool though, I was wondering how they would do that bit 🙂

  11. Narniamiss says:

Wow, very excited! This sounds really neat! I bet the kids had fun with that!

  12. iLiveInNarnia says:

It sounds interesting.. Dunking the set into water. not sure how i feel about that yet. Lol. But then again, that is a hard scene to film!

  13. Lady Galadriel says:

    Yes, it's really interesting.

  14. Lady Galadriel says:

Now that we know a little of how they did it, it's going to be especially interesting to watch the transition. Transition-scenes like the ones where England becomes Narnia are always interesting.

  15. 7chronicles says:

That is so cool, I never would have thought of them going to Narnia that way, I can total picture that in the movie, Visonally I think it will look amazing, and I'm so glad that Caspian is the one who saves them just like the book!

  16. Edmund-is-hot says:

    OMG
    Now I'm REALLY excited
    Aaaaaa! XD

  19. Reepicheep775 says:

I like the sound of the transition. It should really freak Eustace out.

  20. Aslan's my homeboy says:

wow Skandar sounds like a real daredevil 😉 gotta love him. Sounds like an awesome idea though! I bet the movie will be fantastic!!!

  21. LL says:

How fun!!! I'd sooo love to do that! It'd also be fun to surf the English Channel with Mr. Keynes lol!

  22. pselpevensie says:

    very cool.
    *AH! SPOILERS*

  23. glumPuddle says:

Interesting ideas for the transition. So the water pours out of the picture and floods the room… and the kids swim out of the windows, and then surface to see the Dawn Treader? That's the impression I got.

  24. Tarkheen Princess says:

    You rock, Skan!

Boy, I can't wait till I see that movie. . .But, ofcoars, I'm being patient. 🙂

  25. Tarkheen Princess says:

Thier room is going to FLOOD? That's so COOL!

  26. Narniamiss says:

Same here. I'm wondering if Ed is going to have to pull Eustace out, since I'm assuming he will really freak out. Can't wait. 😀

  27. narnia365 says:

lol, wow! I love it! I can't wait to see it… oh wow, it will be so cool!!! I can't wait for the trailer, and then the movie! And soundtrack, and everything…

  28. The Great and Fearless Pug says:

Woah! Pretty big spoiler right there! Can't wait to see it. I think that right there is going to be the best part of the movie! Well, maybe not, but it will still be cool. 😀

  29. Long Live King Skandar says:

    This is awesome!!
I think its interesting that all three Narnia films to date (incl. VDT) include a significant underwater scene but this will be the first time it's based off the book itself..

  30. narniafan says:

Why is this stuff being posted on Facebook and not, oh I don't know … narnia.com? Anyone know when that site will be up?

  31. CaspianThePrince says:

The way they are sucked into Narnia is EXACTLY how I imagined it. I can't even believe it 😀
    I think I'm in love 🙂

  32. Starlily says:

Yeah, at least it sounds like that scene will be all right. Yay, I'm excited! Yippee! Go Dawn Treader! (I don't have time to say anything more intelligent 🙂 )

  33. redeemedqueen says:

This sounds really awesome! Caspian's saving them and they did the transition to Narnia the same as in the book (I applaud their creativity with it)! SOOO EXCITED!!!

  34. Mapthestars says:

It reminds me a lot of like how Michael Bay did this one shot in his movie "The Island" where a room was flooded with water. you can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwFmP0Qt-5Y go to 52 secs into the video.

  35. Andrew says:

I have made a labelled diagram of the tanks at movie worlds studios, it should assist the descriptions in the blog. Check it out here – http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/6505/tanks.jpg

  36. Nathan says:

Uh oh. It sounds like they're going to make this one untrue to the book also, which means it's not going to be successful. The movies can only be successful if they stay true to the books.

Oh boy. It sounds like this is going to be the last Narnia movie made.

I guess we'll never see the Silver Chair.

  37. Bother Eustace says:

So, it's as if the entire room itself is transported to narnia and dunked in the sea. Wierd.

  38. Silver the Wanderer says:

Sounds really neat! The transitions from Earth to Narnia are pretty hard to film (I was quite happy with the train station transition in PC) so I'm excited to see how this one turns out!

  39. HighQueenofNarnia says:

Well, of course he's a daredevil- that's practically his middle name. The subtitle for him in the Prince Caspian movie companion is Daredevil in Disguise- guess he's not in disguise anymore!

  40. HighQueenofNarnia says:

That would be really cool! It mentions in the book that the Pevensies know how to swim (even though they didn't in PC)- they could save Eustace (not that they'd really WANT to, of course…) 🙂 Although I can't say that I like the idea of Lucy, Edmund, and Eustace swimming out of the bedroom- I really like the idea of them going through the picture into Narnia!

  41. HighQueenofNarnia says:

For some reason this story makes me laugh and laugh. I could just see them all underwater with scuba masks and English clothes on- not exactly a match! I can't wait to hear stories about that!

  42. HighQueenofNarnia says:

Thanks Andrew, that was really cool!

  43. Lucille Brown says:

But hey, maybe this is showing an example of how the rest of the movie is different to the book. Maybe all the scene are similary changed like this one.

  44. Eliseo says:

I think I like this transition better than the book, because I just dont see them suddenly being sucked into the picture without making it look …. not very good. Beside, the essence of the book is still there; they are in the room… there is magic and all of sudden they are swimming for their lives so that Caspian can save them. Sounds good to me.

  45. ~Lava~ says:

Cinematically, it is better this way, I guess. Also, a wave did break into the room so there is some basis. I hope they did not show them swimming out of the room through the windows and doors though.

  46. Narniangirl says:

Ha I think reading the first bit kind of makes every girl fall a little bit in love with Skandar (where as with me it's more lol xD) It almost sounds as if they're bigging Skandar up(sorry for crude phrase but I can't describe it any other way) now Will Moseley's left, I got that impression also reading the movie companion. I just wish they'd do blogs more often and give us a trailer!

  47. Griffle says:

So do you think they will still shrink in size to fit through the frame of the painting like in the book or will they have to struggle to get get through? 😉

  48. Griffle says:

My thoughts exactly, I have 0.0 % interest in checking out a Facebook page.

  49. Griffle says:

Right! It's really strange and it feels all wrong. I really don't see the reason for the change. Also, I'm shocked there are so many people on here that think this is how it was in the book. Go read the book again people! I'm sure they will make it really cool and I'm sure I'll love this scene when I see the movie, but for now though, it just feels all wrong.

  50. luis says:

    awsome

  51. Starlily says:

Lol, I read the blog and I realized they were calling the game Paper-Scissors-Rock. Where I come from, we call it Rock-Paper-Scissors. xD I just think its funny.
Also when I read the end of the blog, I thought they said Skandar was going to surf all the way back to England from Australia, instead of shipping only his surfboard. Oh, I'm so silly. 😀

  52. Aravis and Hwin says:

Yes! I cann't wait for the first trailer

  53. narniafan4ever ♥ says:

Yeah, this is nice to know…and I think that the bedroom filling up unstead of them getting sucked into the picture may be a better choice….cause I can see how having then sucked in the picture could look cheezy, if you know what I mean. It's great in the book, but it would be hard to portray it on screen without it looking wierd. idk. I guess as long as they do it well, it will be great! 😀 Sail on, Dawn Treader!!!!

  54. Lady Galadriel says:

O.K., here's what happens in the book. Lucy mentions to the boys that the picture is coming to life, and after they are talking about it, a wave comes through the picture INTO THE ROOM and soaks them. Then they are drawn into the picture and into the sea.

What is the big deal if the whole room floods? Would that even be a change from the book?

Since we don't know all of the details, I don't know if they actually get sucked through the painting. It's one of the tricky things about a transition-scene, I suppose, because there are different ways they could do this.

I just hope the painting is still there, and chances are it's going to be. If it's not there, then I will be mad! But at the moment, I am much more concerned with the bell tower scene. For example, with all the changes in PC, did fans dislike the fact that a train goes by the Pevensies right before their transition?

So right now, I'm all for it. But of course I will reserve my final opinion for when I actually see it, since we've only got snatches of information right now.

  55. liz says:

just a info, if anyone hasnt the movie easy viture,it on starz early premure channel.

  56. ~DaughterOfEve~ says:

I have been so excited for this scene and it seems as if it will be as I exactly imagined it. I am so excited for this movie. The long wait is making me appreciate it more and more!!

  57. The Batman says:

Wow that sounds really cool! I thought that part would be all CG or something.

  58. narnian resident says:

woh thats cool i never thought of the idea of the room flooding with water thats creative. i wondered how they were going to do that scene with them going through the picture and now it seems more clear. all i could imagine was wind whipping through the room and the picture getting bigger. this sounds awesome!

  59. It sounds like an awesome scene!!!!!!! I can't wait to see it!!!! That is so cool how the bedroom is going to be flooded!!!!

  60. Puddleglum says:

I'm just thinking of there being an english child's bedroom resting on the bottom of the sea in Narnia. Salt water would wreck havoc with the furniture.
Curious how they will work out what happens when the children swim "out" of the room, what do they see once "outside"? Wood framing? Or do they just suddenly appear on the surface?
OOOH My head! Thinking of all that moving water makes my stomach swim. I need to take a walk through a nice safe swamp.
