It’s Official: Narnia Returning to the Big Screen Thanksgiving 2026!

Let the countdown begin, NarniaWebbers! For the first time since 2010, the world of Narnia is returning to the big screen.

Netflix has officially announced that Greta Gerwig’s first Narnia film will debut exclusively in IMAX theaters for a four-week run beginning Thanksgiving Day 2026. The adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia will hit approximately 1,000 IMAX screens worldwide, with a streaming release on Netflix scheduled for Christmas 2026.

The project is gaining momentum, with filming set to begin in July. For fans, it seems clear: Aslan is on the move.

Traditionally resistant to extended theatrical windows, Netflix’s CEO Ted Sarandos approved the plan after months of negotiations. While IMAX has guaranteed a two-week theatrical run, a third week could be added based on demand. Discussions are ongoing about a possible expansion into non-IMAX theaters before the streaming debut.

Greta Gerwig’s insistence on a theatrical release has been a point of discussion since her involvement with the franchise was announced but picked up steam this past October with a report from Puck’s Matt Belloni.

Netflix has also committed to marketing the IMAX release as a major theatrical event, with the film branded as a “Netflix/IMAX” title—a key concession to both IMAX and Gerwig.

Stay tuned to NarniaWeb for the latest updates on Netflix’s Narnia films!

  16. Col Klink says:

Exciting! I was dreading something happening to prevent the movie from being greenlit. I remembered the C. S. Lewis estate pulling the plug on that Silver Chair movie a while back. (That can’t still happen, can it? I hope not. I kind of want this movie to get made even if it’s bad. In that case, I’ll have the fun of criticizing it. 🙂 )

  17. Francesco says:

Yay. So happy 🙂 When are we going to know which book they’re adapting?

I must to decry “SHENANIGANS”{!} for Mr Lewis’s short term memory gaff ~ In the first movie Aslan declared that “ONCE A QUEEN OR KING OF NARNIA ALWAYS A QUEEN OR KING OF NARNIA”! so why is QUEEN SUSAN BEING SINGLED OUT IN THE LAST BATTLE FOR HAVING GROWN UP ? although she didn’t have a major part in the battle in the lion witch & wardrobe SHE FOUGHT GALLANTLY IN PRINCE CASPIAN ! and would have made King Caspian a BRILLIANT QUEEN ~

But when will we find out for CERTAIN WHICH book is being adapted?!? I know everyone thinks it’ll be The Magician’s Nephew but when (now we’ve got an approximate release date,) are they going to stop messing us about and TELL us for sure????

  25. Rick Kuhn says:

    Yeah. Mn please

  26. Having seen Gerwig’s Little Women, I can imagine her painting a beautiful picture of Digory’s grief. And having seen her Lady Bird, I can imagine her painting a fascinating depiction of the family conflict between Digory and Uncle Andrew. Having see her Barbie movie, I can imagine an aptly stylised world created for the visuals. A vision of nature tailored for Narnia.

Having seen a clip of her talk show interview about her failed How I Met Your Dad pilot, I expect the acting of the First Joke and the other jokes to be hilarious!

  27. Col Klink says:

@Johnathan Paravel, isn’t the conflict in Lady Bird supposed to be one where neither family member is totally right or totally wrong? I feel like in The Magician’s Nephew, Digory is totally right, and Uncle Andrew is totally wrong.

  28. Katie Wright says:

Finally after 15 years we’re finally getting a Narnia film in the making hopefully. 🙂 🙂 🙂

  29. Hi Col Klink, it’s great to get a reply message from you as I really enjoy your posts and comments.
I was looking at the concept of Family Conflict more broadly when I referred to Lady Bird and Digory and his uncle. I believe Gerwig would be able to deftly portray the dynamic there. Which in a way is a dynamic between four characters, Digory, Polly, Andrew and Jadis. Andrew is used by Jadis, while he idolises her, Digory resents Andrew’s actions at the beginning which got them into that mess, Polly resents Digory’s action with the bell, and Jadis aims to use Digory too.

So to answer your question, I don’t think that the family conflict in MN is the same pattern or ‘type’ as in Lady Bird, but I believe Gerwig is so talented and competent that she will do a thoughful and captivating adaptation of it. Just like she portrayed issues of family in Little Women really realistically, in my opinion.

  30. Pete says:

This is fantastic news!!! I can’t wait to find out more – especially which story she’s making first. It would be so fascinating if it were MN this time – especially as it hasn’t been brought to life on television or film before.

  31. Col Klink says:

@Johnathan Paravel, thanks for your reply too.

  32. Musgrave says:

Are you guys going to make a countdown like in the good olden days?

  33. Miguel Beritan says:

Does that mean we’ll have a trailer this year? If so, by the Lion’s mane, what great news!!! I’m so happy

  34. João says:

Real Narnia movie news?! The world is healing <3

  35. Anna says:

Wow! I think filming won’t be complete until late 2025 so I would be shocked to see a trailer but maybe a promotional image or two from the film!

  42. Jonathan says:

I really hope they do the Magicians Nephew, we had the lion Witch and Wardrode done twice in the last 20 years by BBC and then Walden so it would be nice to have something new and different. I’m not sure they will have the nerve to do it though
