Walden Media Hasn’t Dropped Out of Narnia, Still Negotiating

We have been contacted by someone close to the production who claims that Walden Media has pulled out of making any further Narnia movies.

We are trying to confirm this news as quickly as possible. And should this indeed be the case, we have no idea what will become of the series from this point on.

UPDATE: There are a number of conflicting stories about what’s going on. We’re hearing different things from different people, so until things start to settle down we really don’t know anything for sure. What we can say for sure is that the future of the franchise at present is rather murky. Negotiations may or may not be ongoing, or may have ground to a halt for a while. We’re going to just have to wait and see what shakes out. -Tirian

UPDATE 2: I did have a chance to speak with officials from Walden Media today. Walden stated emphatically that they are still pursing another Narnia film and that they are continuing discussions with the C.S. Lewis Estate to make that a reality. At the present time nothing has been confirmed. But there has not yet been a final yes, or a final no. If Walden does another Narnia film, it will almost certainly be The Magician’s Nephew.

I think it is clear that some negotiations are still taking place, though perhaps as I suggested earlier, they are stalled. It is likely that Walden’s option on the film will last for several more years so it could be quite some time before we know for sure one way or the other.

A lot like what they did with the witch's role in the movie. The first couple trailers made it look a lot like she had a signifacant villianious role in the movie.

  2. UselessScrubb says:

They could pull a Peter Jackson and make both SC and MN back to back or at the same time and possibly save a little bit of money.. I know each film being made depends on the success of the previous but that would solve the aging issue of Will Poulter and again help cut some costs. I am more anxious to see MN myself but do not like the idea of Eustace being 20+ for the movie.

  3. Not Of This World says:

Then the "Expirement House" will become the "Expirement College" 🙂

  4. stateofgreen says:

Or maybe not even Experiment College….Experiment Real World? Eustace becomes a professor of entomology, goes to work, marries Jill, and settles down to raise a family of little Scrubbs. 😉

They started Narnia films epic! Don't stop believing that Narnia can be back to box-office films and if they will make Narnia 4 really relevant from the book, it can be one of the most top grossing films of all time. Narnia is a film were you can know Jesus better. "That's the reason why Narnia bought to life! That by knowing God's love for us we can know it better by this these films!
Further up and Further In! Time to bring Narnia back to life!

Hm. :/ Well, not so happy about them making MN, I prefer SC, though I'm happy that they are still discussing on making another Narnia movie. But…REALLY? "SEVERAL" MORE *YEARS*????? THAT'S just nuts…Man, I'm beginning to *really* see that Narnia is NOT that popular and that is VERY hard on trying to making them into film……poor Narnia…..:(

  8. Thee Narnian Meerkat says:

    AMEN!!!!

  9. Narnian Meerkat says:

Don't really like the idea of MN and SC being back to back (by that do you mean together?), but I DO like the idea of Peter Jackson being the director!!!! 😉 😀 He is SUCH a GOOD director!!! He brought The Lord of the Rings to LIFE!!! And he actually STICKS to the original storyline and books and meaning to them! 🙂 😀 ALL FINGERS AND TOES UP FOR PETER JACKSON!!!! Sorry, I just really like Peter Jackson and his films. 😉

    LOL!!!

  11. Moonwood says:

Narnia is VERY popular, it's the movies they keep messing up, buy not being close enough to the books

  12. Queen C The Gentle says:

After watching the scene about Lucy wanting to be beautiful like her sister, I mean for the first time I was ashamed of her and I never thought that would happen b/c nothing is wrong with her she is already beautiful always was just like Susan. What really matters is on the inside and not running from who you are ('Don't run from who you are'-didn't Simba's father from Lion King say that?)
Then I thought about writing a love story about 2 very different people from 2 different worlds like for example, Caspian was from Narnia and Susan was from Earth that's what I mean by 2 different worlds, but how do you write a love story? Maybe add a little Beastly(book+film) what about adventure and the characters execpt the main girl I know how to describe her. I want the world the main guy is from to be a world of magic like Narnia.

  13. daren says:

I actually disagree with this as I thought the third film was the best attempt so far. Although I liked the first two, I didnt think that they managed to capture the magic of narnia as much as say the earlier BBC versions did. With VOFDT, although they changed the story at bit more, I found that it was a lot more magical and captured the essence of what the narnia stories are about. I do hope though if the do, do the Magicians Nephew they dont use Tilda as I hated her as the White Witch.

  14. I love georgie says:

Meee I LOVE all the Narnia Movies with all my heart!!!! COME ON NARNIA!!!

  15. I love georgie says:

Personally i think they should do HHB And either SC or MN! :$ i think HHb with get higher then all of them!
    🙂

  16. I love georgie says:

    100% agreeded!!!!

  17. I love georgie says:

They have to make more NARNIA!!! They should make HHB and MN Or SC I personally think..the first one was AMAZING the second one was GREAT the third was AWESOME i have no favourite and i just seem to think that HHB will have a better reaction!…bbut i also think that the reason LWW set such high exspectations was because everyone was so familliar with it And Almost everyone had read it! So thats why they think there dropping the standard and stopping the movies cos they think there getting bad! when its just that everyones not so familiar with the others?? 🙂

  18. Not Of This World says:

I assume that would be http://www.cinimascore.com????

  19. Puddleglum says:

I have been arguing for both films being made together for some time now. Perhaps we Narnians need to be a little more outspoken on the subject.

  20. I love georgie says:

I would like them both made at the same time TWO!!! But they are doubtfull about making one let alone two at the same time! 🙁 but it would be epic! if they could!!! xD PLEASE MAKE THEM BOTH AT THE SAME TIME!!:P

  21. Puddleglum says:

Way I see it. If the Lord of the Rings could all be made at the same time, why not Narnia?
Granted, there finantial reasons to be considered, but all the three movies have made money, have they not?

  22. I love georgie says:

Yeah Why dont they Just Use the Money From VDT and make them Both Then they Would have the Profit of two Movies at the end they would both be out at the same time or thereabouts and could use it to make either HHB or LB because the money wud be really high and then walden media and all them would have the confidenceto make it..i reck it goes something like this…
    -Money From VDT goes to
-SC because MN has special funding them both being made
-then use the money from them to make
    -HHB
    -LB
not as simple as that but there's an Idea ?

  23. Jessica hankinson says:

No!!!!!!!!!!They have to make another movie,i live on Narnia I watch the movies every night before bed,im reading the last battle now,and i love all the Narnia books and movies,if they stop making Narnia movies i am gonna have my dad drive over to Walden Media and demand more Narnia, and if they say no i am gonna sit in the building untill they say yes!!Thats how much i love Narnia!!! 🙂 <3

  24. Not Of This World says:

I'll join you in the sit in 🙂

  25. Not Of This World says:

    Like your plan ILG

  26. I love georgie says:

SAME HERE I WOULD SIT THERE WITH YOU TILL THE WORLD ENDS!!!

  27. CitizenCairParavel says:

    When does the sit-in start?

  28. I love georgie says:

I Dont Care who Directs The film I dont care how long it takes I dont care who the actors are Or which movie they do..But They need to make more narnia!!!! If they Dont We Should Start A humuges Protest like Jess H Suggested And Go to Walden Media and Demand the movie be made!!!!… 😀

  29. Anhun says:

@Puddleglum: No they haven't. Prince Caspian was a serious money-loser. A representative from Walden said, in December 2010, 2.5 years after PC came out, with home discs and TV licensing in the mix, they STILL hadn't made their money back on PC.

In the case of VDT, I haven't heard anything official. We have it on good authority that VDT cost roughly $255 million. How much the studios made out of the ticket sales and other revenue sources is an industry secret. My guesstimate is that they've passed the 200 mill mark, but they haven't made back all of their money yet. It still didn't lose as much as PC, not nearly.

  30. Child of Aslan says:

Agreed! I just hope everything get worked out smoothly and there's no more setbacks like this…=/

  31. Child of Aslan says:

Lol, that would be so funny! =)

  32. Not Of This World says:

But Anhun, if the buget was $250 million and they made $415 million off of it, wouldn't that be a higher gross?

  33. BM says:

ATTN: NARNIA FANS. including me. Don't stop making these films because the last Harry Potter film will be over this year so guess who will be able to take on the audiences now? NARNIA will and there are still many books to be completed and many people to reach with the good Christian message of Jesus.

  34. Seiko says:

True with Harry Potter done there will be less to distract from Narnia. Granted, their will be two Hobbit films, in December 2012 and 2013. What they could even do is work on both films, and ultimately film them when they get to it and release them both 1) December 2014 and 2) December 2015. So we'll have to wait 3 1/2 years but then just 1 year. 4 1/2 years with 5 narnia's in total.

Let's face it; they need a new strategy. Doing one every so many years isn't particulary proving to be a sucessful venture. Competition is troublesome, namely in US markets with Harry taking it down. Why can't go see two entirely different fantasy franchises?

Another idea is to not release "The Silver Chair" around December, perhaps earlier, maybe in August, or the start of November (the latter would give it a month before Hobbit 1-2). And then christmas comes around and it rakes in a little more cash.
This kind of talk versus those fighting for Magician's Nephew, age issues, money, etc, can be why nothing is working out. Then again, it's been over six months. Time to stop being babies and do something. Take action.

  35. Anhun says:

If Narnia comes out in early November, it will be forgotten by Christmas. Look at HP7. It was a popular movie by any standard, but it had no holiday bump. Luckily for Warner bros., people will show up in hoards to see HP no matter when it comes out. That's not the case for Narnia. The Narnia movies need the holiday bump.

  36. Anhun says:

The gross is higher than the budget, yes. But studios only get a cut of the gross, not the whole thing. How much of a cut? That depends on a number of factors, the more the movie makes it's first week or so, the larger the studio's share. For "slow burner" movies like VDT, the studio can take home less than half of the gross. I made some rough calculations, based on how much studios generally make off of box office in different times and places. Based on that, I would guess that they took home roughly $180 million from the film's theatrical run. That's just an estimate, though. We can't know for sure.

  37. Child of Aslan says:

Absolutely! The HP movies have been a huge distraction for many people…=/ I hope more people get the true meaning of these wonderful stories! =)

  38. Child of Aslan says:

Amen! Count me in!!! (Even though I most likely wouldn't be able to make my way to walden by myself, but I would be there in spirit!!) =D

  39. Child of Aslan says:

    Yeah, we should! =D

  40. Chronicle says:

Come on Fox you're giving Percy Jackson a sequel surely you can give Narnia one as well.

  41. Not Of This World says:

But who pays for the budget? Is it the producers or the studio? I've always have thought the producers pay for it.

  42. Not Of This World says:

I can wait till 2014 for the next one. I don't think it would be smart to go up against the Hobbit. Plus I don't think that is what C.S. Lewis would want, considering that Tolken was his friend.

  43. Not Of This World says:

    AMEN!!!!!

  44. Seiko says:

    Two Things:
If they are making a sequel to Percy Jackson, which made roughly 233 mil on 75 mil budget, or Prince Of Persia, which made 335mil on 150 mil budget, than certainly Narnia3 which made 415mil on a 155 mil budget is far more of a winner than these two.

  45. No news in SO LONG. I'm afraid the franchise really is about to end.

  46. I love georgie says:

Owell who cares if you dont make a big profit!!! 🙂 do it for the fans And for C.S Lewis!! so what if you spend a bit of money on it ITSWELL WORTH IT !! if i Had millions of dollars i would happily spend all of it on Narnia!!!

  47. Queen C The Gentle says:

    Happy Birthday Georgie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  48. Savber100 says:

The sheer amount of spam and misspelling on these comment sections really makes you go "O_o".

Anyways, I really hope they end it here. Bluntly put, the Narnian films are not good anymore. The first was decent but the franchise went downhill since. Call me pessimistic but the numbers do NOT lie.

But the good news is that if the contract expires with Walden it gives other talented people a chance to reboot or finish the series.

If we're going to make Narnia, we need the best because I will have nothing less for Narnia. I simply have enough of these mediocre adaptations from uninspired filmmakers and I'm willing to end this series to start again.

  49. I love georgie says:

Maybe if walden Media drop Out A better one will come in And Re Gain Narnia!! 🙂 and NARNIA WILL BE SAVED!!!
    P.S HAPPY BIRTHDAY GEORGIE!!!!

  50. Musgrave says:

Does anyone know if there is a soundtrack for the focus on the family radio theater narnia productions?

  51. Anhun says:

Simply not true. World wide, LWW has sold more than twice as many copies as the rest of the books in the series combined. If I remember correctly, there was an interview with Mark Johnson where he remarked on how different it was working on LWW, where everyone knew the story as a beloved classic, versus PC, where a lot of the people involved in production had never read the book and were asking what it was about.

  52. I love georgie says:

But Diddn't VDT come out in December ?

  53. Anhun says:

Yes, and VDT had a holiday bump. Without that it probably would have fallen off the grid completely after a week or so, and would have been a financial catastrophe, as opposed to a smaller loss.

  54. Anhun says:

the producers are usually part of the studio.

  55. farsight-mssngr says:

Happy 16th Birthday Georgie Henley! -sorry late greetings!
Wishing you all the best! I Love You Queen Lucy The Valiant!
God Bless you and your family always!

  56. Not Of This World says:

So why don't the people who give the most money get the most money? Filmmaking sometimes just doesn't make sence.

  57. Not Of This World says:

Do you mean the real Georgie Henly? She's 16? Seems like she would be older.

  58. Queen C The Gentle says:

I love how Narnia's all about adventure, courage, and such but what about the romance it would have been interesting to add more romance…if it were to be a love story but still take place in Narnia what would it be called?

  59. farsight-mssngr says:

In what part do you mean? Yes she's 16 and she is so beautiful in movies and even in real life and she is very kind-hearted that's why I Love her very much!-but I love all the cast of Narnia films!
