Dark Horizons’ Notable Films of 2010 – Dawn Treader

Dark Horizons is in the process of reviewing the notable films of 2010. They have picked Dawn Treader as one of them. Some highlights from their story:

“The budget has been cut to a still substantial but more reasonable $140 million which means less pressure to perform but a tighter control on production. Fox Walden also isn’t as strict as Disney on sanitising the product so the film will hopefully take more risks – that could be one of the reasons Disney opted out (they cited ‘creative differences’). The release is back to the more suitable December slot, while director Michael Apted is a far more skilled hand at both drama and action/adventure than previous helmer Andrew Adamson.

The only downside here could be Walden itself which has been keeping production rather quiet and didn’t have any set visits to the film, even for locally based journalists like myself which has surprised more than a few people. A decently updated production blog is online which is a nice start, but the buzz needs to begin early to make sure this doesn’t go the way of ‘Caspian’. Lets hope the film becomes the hit it could be, because the next book ‘The Silver Chair’ is also one of the best of the series and deserves a big-budget adaptation.”

    Yay, go VoDT!

    Onward to success!

Go, Dawn Treader, go! For Narnia and the North! (Or in this case, the Eastern Edge of the world)

  4. Caspian says:

C'mon, VDT! We can do this. Just as long as they realize that 'Creative Differences' and 'Risks' are okay so long as you don't change the story too much…;D

*crosses fingers* I'm not going to jinx us by saying "At least it can't be as bad as PC", but…

Very encouraging little review. I also happen to agree that they need to start on their marketing of VDT or it could take the same road that PC did…

  6. Fox and Walden will promote the movie. Fox did some good promoting for Avatar. They'll do the same. But the story of the Dawn Treader should promote the film itself. It is the best in the series. Tell your friends who haven't read the series. I wait with anticipation

Dark Horizons said some nice things! thats awesome. Go Dawn Treader!

  8. Lady Galadriel says:

    Awesome! 😀

True, word of mouth though seems to be a good way to let people know about the movie. Some friends of mine didn't even know PC came out until I told them about seeing it a week later. And it didn't help that the commercials they did have put too much focus on the more violent scenes and not enough on the calmer ones.

Dark Horizons on VDT: "Best of all is, the story, which lifts much of its basic outline from the best bits of Homer’s “The Odyssey”, is widely considered the best of all the ‘Narnia’ adventures." … What does this mean? That book VDT archetypally resembles "The Odyssey" … or something else?

  11. Saerwen says:

    That is really neat.

  12. Adeona says:

Wow. That's a nice little article. I think they summed up the situation pretty well.
Thanks for the good press Dark Horizons!

A better photo could have been chosen to represent VDT, though. I think the shot of Lucy standing on the balcony at the rear (sorry can't remember the nautical term at the moment) of the Dawn Treader over the ship's name would have been a better choice. Edmund looks awful in the one they are using. But the background detail is very good.

  13. Narniamiss says:

They hit it right on the nails with that one! I do think we need to do some word of mouth for this; I think that is definetly one that PC lacked.

  14. ChristProclamer says:

Great! I noticed that VoDT got a decently larger blip and rather better review than some of the other films on there. I agree: Word of mouth was a huge impact on LWW; the more people know about it sooner AND remember it, the better!
Getting really excited here, and I still have a year to go…

Hear hear on the comments for Silver Chair, PUDDLEGLUM must have his closeup!

Very cool! I love hearing news like this. I can't wait to see the movie! Onward for Narnia.

  17. Very cool
I can't wait for it to come out

  18. NarniaLuver4Ever says:

    What calm scenes? lol jk

  19. RoseRed says:

wow I really agree with that guy, he's taking a positive look at the budget and i AGREE THAT WORD OF MOUTH IS THE WAY TO PROMOTE AT LEAST UNTIL WARNER AND FOX COME UP WITH SOMETHING GOOD.
(oops caps locks sorry :s )
