Dawn Treader Plot Details!

ChristianityToday has posted an article about the “Narnia Summit” that was held last week, where Walden Media showed footage and walked through the entire script with Christian leaders, Lewis experts, and fan sites like NarniaWeb and NarniaFans. (Read Tirian’s report here)

It is definitly worth reading the entire article, but here are some highlights that will get everyone talking:

The Ending:

Kathy Keller: “I’m glad the final interaction between Aslan and Lucy was there in its unadulterated entirety, because I consider that the pinnacle of the entire seven books.”

I have spoken with Tirian, and he confirmed that the line “there I have another name” is in the film! This is something NarniaWebbers have been concerned about for some time. Rejoice!

The Undragoning:

Keller says she learned that writers originally wanted Eustace, still in dragon form, to fight a sea monster and “earn” his return to human form. But she says Flaherty, a committed Christian, “put them straight that you don’t earn grace, you receive it once you are humbled and aware of your need.”

Tirian also confirmed that, in the film, we will see Aslan ripping the dragon skin off of Eustace! If you have not read the book, you are probably incredibly confused right now. If you have… rejoice again!

And now for the big spoiler:

“I was less than enthusiastic about the imposition of an invented quest to recover the seven swords of the seven lords to undo some evil magic of a new witch,” [Keller] said. “It is a fairly innocuous addition, but as a purist I would have been happier without it.”

Tirian confirmed the bit about the seven swords, but added: “I haven’t seen any evidence of a new witch being added to this story.”

There is sure to be both positive and negative reactions to these spoilers, but it seems that just about everyone in attendance, even those that disliked the first two films, was generally very happy with what they saw and heard.

Thanks to Icarus for the tip!

UPDATE: There was a good deal of confusion due to the line about a witch being in the film. And while both Tirian and Specter from NarniaFans denied it, it was thought that perhaps they weren’t present when the information was given.

However, ChristianityToday released this statement today which puts any confusion to rest. “CT has since learned from Walden that the ‘new witch’ is not in the final version of the film, but was scrapped during script discussions.” So there you go, no witch!

Thanks PrincessMia241 and Narnialover101 for the heads-up!

I was just going to ask that. But don't take it offensively, princessspy. Hey, maybe it's because you want to be a princess and a spy. I'm going to be a secret agent when I grow up! But don't tell anyone, it's a secret!!!! (even though it's showing to the whole world! 🙂 )

  2. WilliamMoseleyandSkandarcrush! says:

I know, who thought of putting a witch anyway? And also the other added ideas. (MLG, Rhilian's wife, the witch, Lucy/Caspian thing, shall I go on?…)

  3. WilliamMoseleyandSkandarcrush! says:

Yeah for Jesus fans!! I LOVE Jesus. I only wish the whole world knew that. It's sad that some people don't know the Lord. It's more sad that I know what's going to happen to them when they die 🙁 ! *SIGH* I'm SO glad and thankful that Jesus died for me. I can't wait for the day when he'll return! I'm SSOOOOOO EXCITED!!! I wonder what my first reaction will be when I finally see him face to face…

I thought he was a good actor as Prince Caspian. 😀 I know it's strange that they changed his hair color as the character. 😛 I can't wait for this movie! 😀 😀

  5. Christian says:

I guess this means everything we heard before from the cast and crew about a "battle" has been scrapped? Hmm… I'm still a skeptic, though I'm glad they're keeping that "other name" line.

I totally disagree with the article when it talked about how the battle in LWW threw everything off. Imagine how boring that scene would've been if it was just Lucy, Susan and Aslan, and then they'd turn up on the battlefield, see all the carnage, and the audience would say "What in the world?!?" Yeah… books and movies are not the same.

    Avatar.com? What is it?

  7. NarnianElf says:

I can't believe that you don't think he's a good actor! He is absolutely one of my favorites. And I think he is pretty good looking 😀 But, I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion!

  8. NarnianElf says:

Lol, yeah. I don't know if I have been praying about Dawn Treader, but I certainly have been dreaming about it!! 😀

It's a website that lets you have your own picture that will show up on all the comments you make on this website and all other websites. (at least, on the websites that allow your pictures to show up.)

This is my question as well. Continuity is the reason for many of the changes in the films and continuity is what keeps this series moving. For most book readers today, you can easily pick up The Silver Chair, but for movie goers the anticipation of waiting at least a year is going to build up expectations. That combined with book purists ("The Narnia Police" as an article states!) seems like the bar keeps getting raised for each successive film. My encouragement and enthusiasm is with the production, give us The Silver Chair!

  11. NarnianElf says:

    Lol same here!

  12. NarnianElf says:

WilliamMoselyandSkandarCrush, we don't know who you are. Only who you like. That dosn't really tell the world who you are. 😀

  13. NarnianElf says:

Yeah!! Go God!! It's awesome knowing that there are other Christians out there. I need to meet you all now!

  14. narniafan4ever ♥ says:

haha….we should have a Narnian Christian reunion! lol 😀

  15. tenthofthatname says:

The greatest strength of Narnia is its broad appeal to Christians and non-Christians alike. When a non-Christian gets the moral of the story without having to know Christ to understand a principle of grace, you know the story is a powerful one.

  16. narniafan4ever ♥ says:

No puedo esperar para la película tampoco!

  17. narniafan4ever ♥ says:

    haha! I don't feel quite so embarrassed now…. 😀 😛

  18. tenthofthatname says:

I am in agreement with decarus. The lamb scene is a bit too obvious in its Christian imagery for my taste. On the other hand someone unfamiliar with Christian symbolism may not think twice about a lamb, they may consider it just another one of Aslan's many transformations, and he's eating fish only because they're by the sea.

  19. tenthofthatname says:

"Going out simply to find the men showed respect and gratitude for their loyalty to his father, a concern for those who still might be alive, and a spirit of adventure."

I understand this so much and agree. I would rather have the witch's connection as a continuity bridge to The Silver Chair or no sword quest at all. Just a mysterious sword quest diminishes the value of the Lords themselves as characters associated with Caspian's family, although we might see the attitude in the story shift when Caspian meets Bern. I always felt Lord Bern portrayed the human connection between the lost Lords and Caspian's father as well as Caspian himself best.

    Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy sounds sweet!! 😀

  21. Starlily says:

Yeah, I didn't mind the battle in LWW. It didn't bother me at all. But everyone has their own opinion. What bothers me might not bother someone else, and vise-versa.
(But I also have to disagree with the article, because I liked to see the rhinos fighting in the battle 😛 )

  22. The Great and Fearless Pug says:

What was that toward the end? "Although I don't agree with some of the things they are doing, so far they seem to be doing pretty well." That leaves me a little nervous. Of course, they were also talking negatively about the ressurection and the battle being intermingled together, which I thought was fine. In which case, I think it's going to turn out great! I wish it was here already!

  23. Aslanisthebest says:

How relieving that there isn't going to be a witch!

  24. Liberty Hoffman says:

YAY!!!!! I am SO happy! I knew everything would turn out alright! I am so glad to hear about everything! awesome! :D:D:D:D:D

  25. 220chrisTian says:

@decarus / tenth: what's wrong with the lamb-to-lion scene? What's wrong with its being explicitly Christian? Why try to take out what Lewis intentionally put in? Neither of you seems to understand the theological depth of this scene.

  26. terebinthiangirl says:

yeah!!!! i'm so glad they "scrapped" the new witch part! that would have ruined the whole movie

  27. 220chrisTian says:

@tenth: the article makes it clear that Apted didn't "get" the message of the book, i.e. grace, without help from Christian and Walden Media Prez Michael Flaherty. He had to drill it into everyone, for a solid day, what grace really is. Without him, Apted and others would probably have shown Eustace earning his undragoning. 😛

  28. tenthofthatname says:

220chrisTian: Only people familiar with Christian symbolism would think there's theological depth in that scene. That's why I don't think it hurts to keep the scene in the movie, because it only feels explicit when you know Christian symbolism. To anyone else, the lamb is just another shape Aslan can take, no different from an albatross or a house cat. But I personally can do without the lamb scene, I much prefer the subtlety of "There I have another name." It sends a message that can be felt by Christians and non-Christians alike.

  29. tenthofthatname says:

220chrisTian: That's very good of Flaherty. What's your point?

  30. Eliseo says:

maybe the "mixing of other Narnia books" isnt necessarily a reference to the Silver Chair, but of the Horse and His Boy, seeing as how some Indian actors have been cast as Calormene abassadors.

  31. tenthofthatname says:

I was considering this too, but I'm stumped as to what that element would be plotwise since HHB happened so long ago and we know Aravis joined Archenland instead, unless the reference is strictly stylistic.

  32. RumbleBuffinTheStrong says:

    wow not bad.

  33. GlimGlum says:

Greatly encouraged by this news. This will help VDT's success(IMHO) and hopefully open the door for The Silver Chair.
    Sail on VDT! 🙂

  34. Puddleglum says:

Though I generally like the idea of being faithful to the books, I enjoyed the battle scene in LWW. Not for the battle itself, but because of the final scene where Peter, even motivated by seening Edmund fall to the witch, cannot defeat her. Instead it is only Aslan who can ultimatly do so. How different from other adventure/action films we see, where a hero in similer circumstances emerges victorious on their own.

  35. liz says:

he waz good in the film and stardust, so waht if they made him different from the book @ least part of it followed the book, right?

  36. Hope in the Lord says:

I know I know, you're right. Just I've heard so little of him in this movie and he is my favorite character more so then Eustace.

  37. Midshipman Pepper Darcy says:

I'm totally excited that VDT is keeping the important lines! It's really nice to meet other Christians on NarniaWeb!

  42. Mirima Rosetrader says:

Wow this is so exciting! Now we are getting some real news! I am so glad they are having Aslan say "there I have another name" because I love that line and I love that they are having him rip the skin off Eustace SO psyched about seeing that! I hope they don't add the witch, but if they do I'll have to see if I like her before I make my opinion. Well great news! Thank you Tirian for hunting for those confirmations! Long live Aslan and Sail on VDT!

  43. always narnian says:

WOW WOW WOW!!!!! I didn't know there were so many Christians out here! I am glad I made the comment and got to see that! I am glad about those two lines too!!! YES!!! Yay! For Jesus' Glory Alone,
    Always Narnian

  44. Narnia&The_North says:

Me too! I really didn't think they would leave those parts in! Now I really can't wait for VoDT to come out!!

  45. WilliamMoseleyandSkandarcrush! says:

He is a good actor, but in Prince Caspian, he was horrible. But I have a feeling that he'll do good in VOTDT.

  46. WilliamMoseleyandSkandarcrush! says:

good point. I never thought of that.

  47. WilliamMoseleyandSkandarcrush! says:

seriously, this is so cool to know how many Cjristians are on Narniaweb. Even though I don't know who u r, I can't wait to meet u guys in heaven!! 🙂

  48. NarniaWarrior says:

    Yea….no witch !!!

  49. narniafan4ever ♥ says:

    LOL! 😀 😛

  50. decarus says:

I think that Christianity is less explicit then that. You can believe it or not. God doesn't take away the choice and yet i think this is the only place where i would consider that the Chronicles of Narnia make an explicit connection to Christianity. You can't take it to mean that it has a connection to anything else. I completely agree that there are a lot more connection to Christianity throughout the entire series, but this one could only connect to Christianity. It just seems to obvious.

Though i guess like tenthofthatname says i may only see it as obvious because i know the connection and the average person won't. Either way, i've never liked it and really if there is one thing in all the books that i don't like that is okay. I just like the less obvious of 'there i have another name'. Christianity isn't obvious. It doesn't take away the choice. I hope that the lion to lamb is cut, but the line is great and i hope it is in.

  51. 4signs(rpt) says:

Jollification! I hope he's right about people who disliked the previous films being ok with this one. There's just too much stuff that I couldn't hack in the first two… and I still long for a Narnia movie that I can really let my guard down and enjoy. I'm so glad we lost the witch. That plot device is getting old anyway since they brought the WW back (however briefly) for PC. And explicitly Christian scenes from the book left unaltered in the movie??? Yessss! 😀

  52. Lyle says:

Im probobly on the outs here… but I'm an Athiest. And I LOVE THE NARNIA BOOKS (and I have the DVD and BlueRay and Movie Companion Books). I have read all books several times since I was six (I am now twenty-seven) and my favourite being Siliver Chair, Last Battle and Magician's Nephew. While I was raised a Protestant and my family and friends practice it, the Narnia series can be enjoyed by anyone of any faith, or lack there of. CS Lewis was a genious and the series will definitely live forever thanks to it's compelling story and great morals.

  53. WilliamMoseleyandSkandarcrush! says:

What do you believe in, Lyle? (respectively)

  54. WilliamMoseleyandSkandarcrush! says:

    who invented "LOL" ?

  55. SavedByGrace says:

Yeah! I'm so happy that they are sticking to the book so far.

  56. sirsimon says:

sorry if i scared ya, there will be no witch after all, summin this up with the report of the clips, this film will bloody rock!

  57. Aravis says:

    Agreed times 4! 🙂

  58. High Queene ShellyBelly says:

I agree, i like the idea of the swords, as it is a visual aid to portraying the book's quest in a visual medium-a movie. plus, remember ,the books are written in the traditional fairy tale format, which is intentionally sparse and sketchy to allow kids imaginations to develop and fill in the blanks. When you are trying to develop a 2 hour movie script which can also appeal to adults from a fairytale, you need to flesh out the plotlines more, not to mention portray internal motivations in a visual way. so im cool with the idea, as long as it stays true to cs lewis's intent.

  59. High Queene ShellyBelly says:

they probably were tinkering with the idea of providing continuity between movies. Its more difficult with narnia ( more so than LOTR or star wars) because you lose major characters as the books and movies go along. They may have been concerned that there are so few characters that go on to silver chair. they like the idea of a built in audience and having more major characters follow into the next movie would help market the next movie.

  60. cuppycakesrach says:

Awesome! super excited!! cant wait for the movie to come out… i don't think that the sword thing is that bad of an idea .. it could work lol.. oh well i'm just excited! woot woot! lol
