Dawn Treader VBS Curriculum Delayed

Last month we told you about Group Publishing’s Fun-For-The-Whole-Family Hour package that would include exclusive clips of Dawn Treader footage. The package was to be available on June 1 and then was pushed out to June 30. We’re received word that the date has been pushed out again and will now begin shipping on August 16.

In an email sent to those who pre-ordered the package, Group Publishing writes:

As you know, this product incorporates never-before-seen movie clips from the upcoming Chronicles of Narnia movie “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”, scheduled to release in December of 2010. Since there is so much excitement about this movie, and such devoted Narnia followers, the film makers have asked us to keep our product out of circulation so the movie clips don’t end up online.

This is unfortunate because most Vacation Bible School programs are wrapping up by August 16 so the program may have limited effectiveness.

Such are the upside and downside of modern technolgy. 🙁

  2. Eliseo says:

    well thats generic 😛

  3. Tirian says:

If this is truly because they want to avoid piracy, that's too bad. Yes, people will post clips online. And yes, that will generate more excitement in the film. This seems like Fox kind of shooting themselves in the foot.

  4. Lutra's Pearl says:

    Darn-it.

  5. WilliamMoseleyandSkandarcrush! says:

WHAT!?!?! i was looking forward to see our church do that VBS this year 🙁 Now I found out we're doing a "comet city" based VBS. No fair! When I was young enough to be in VBS they had boring stuff, but now that I'm older, they have astronomy stuff! Man, that really stinks, because I'm going to be an astronomer or a spy when I grow up. Sory, I got WAY off the subject.

  6. Sir Jack says:

wouldn't these videos put online be good advertising??
unless there horible, and nobody who sees them wants to see the film anymore… 😛

  7. Braden Woodburn says:

Well, in a way I can see that makes sense. Cause if people see the clips before the trailer itself, they may not like what they see therefore decreasing the money amount for the box office when the movie actually comes out. So I can say I am not upset about this too much. Just the trailer will be a good enough clip for me until the movie hits the theaters! 🙂

  8. Malfhok says:

It makes all sorts of sense in a marketing perspective if you think of it the old way. But if you figure that the clips would generate interest online… It's just not a good decision.

  9. Lucy says:

How come fox won't let us see the clips? Exactly how bad IS this movie that they're so scared of word getting out? LOL, I'm kidding, but only half! Still, I want to see it! I love Narnia. Don't care a fig about this pacakge thingie, but I was hoping they'd let people post the clips on youtube so we could all enjoy it. How come they're only letting the church-going folk see this anyway? What about the other Narnia fans who aren't cathioics?! As in, you know, ME!

  10. Lucy says:

Well, that's all very well and good, but there isn't a trailer yet; we're all still waiting! Can't they give us a little taste of what this film will be like? There are probably nucler missles not as well guarded as clips from this movie!

  11. Narniamiss says:

Until August?? Does this mean we may not see a trailer until then?

  12. Liberty Hoffman says:

ditto! why oh why are they doing this? 🙁

  13. Lucy Took says:

I find it odd that they would delay it that long. Most VBS programs take place in July, with schools going to year round schedules.
Hope this doesn't mean that the trailer will take that long for us to get it.

  14. Lucy says:

ugh, what a ghastly thought, I HOPE NOT!

  15. tenthofthatname says:

With a poster already in circulation in May I really don't thin

  16. It's Fox's decision. But I think there will be a trailer out this summer with the summer blockbusters.

  17. chirpingbird says:

I would like to point out the obvious- they are not letting only 'church-going people' and 'catholics' (more Christians, actually, I'd think) see the clips. You could buy the package if you want. They are included in the VBS package probably becasue VotDT is a very symbolic book.

  18. HighQueenofNarnia says:

Darn! Oh well. My first thought after reading this is that production, for some mysterious and unknown reason, isn't releasing the trailer until July and doesn't want any major spoilers before that. Why else would they skip from June 30 straight to August 16? Late July for the trailer, I'd say. And, what's the use of delaying the inevitable? I mean, on August 16 or shortly thereafter, people are going to post the clips on the Internet. Why delay it? This I do not understand.

Lucy, not all VBS people are Catholics. And many Narnia fans are Christians, including myself. I'm thinking that Fox and production are thinking that they'll potentially reach many fans by releasing clips to Christians. And, just because you're not a Christian doesn't mean that you can't buy the package (at least, to my understanding).

  19. chirpingbird says:

"Such devoted Narnia followers"? They've been watching us!!!

  20. HighQueenofNarnia says:

Double ditto! Why delay the inevitable till late summer rather than allowing people to see it in the early to mid-summer?

  21. HighQueenofNarnia says:

I highly doubt that… although, with the American government in particular these days, I don't know. 🙂 But I get your point.

  22. HighQueenofNarnia says:

Amen! Maybe if we make noise long enough and loud enough, they'll actually release the trailer before school restarts! (That was a Marshwiggle statement- I sincerely hope that the trailer will come out before that time!)

  23. Starlily says:

For some reason I'm not surprised… Oh well, I wasn't going to get the VBS thing anyway. I'll just have to be patient.

  24. Hm. Slightly self-defeatist there…Makes no difference to me, since I won't watch the clips anyhoo, but I sympathise with all you poor starving spoiled fans. 😉
I do hope for their own sakes they move the release date back to June. And I'm glad they realize we (fans) exist. That's…comforting, somehow.

  25. QueenLucy12 says:

nooooooooooooooooooo! i wasnt gonna get the vbs thing anyway, but the trailer when will it come???? *crys*

  26. Starlily says:

Did you read the story in the Word on the Street section? It says we might expect a trailer in a few weeks. But I guess that could aways change. Still, hope for the best. 🙂

  27. chirpingbird says:

I hoped for the best and see what happened here! :p

  28. pselpevensie says:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DOES THIS MEAN THAT NOW TRIALERS WON'T BE OUT UNTIL AUGUST????!!!!!!!!

  29. Lucy says:

Oh, see, now I didn't know that. Thanks for clearing that up. However, I'd like to point out that I never said I wasn't a christian, I said I wasn't calthoic.

  30. Lucy says:

Does anybody know if there is any truth to the rumour that the vdt trailer is being released on friday with the new shrek movie? Someone said it might, but I didn't want to get my hopes up.

  31. Lucy says:

maybe they're reading our comments right now and laughing at us as they push the release day further away…whispering, "Ten bucks if you can make a Narnia fan cry!" Hee hee. just kididng.

  32. chirpingbird says:

I don't know if thats something to get hopes up for exactly. SHREK could be big competition.
Although that would be a little cool…
    and no, I don't know.

  33. Trufflehunter says:

I have not heard anything about that, but, if you think about it, it could be. It depends on how close 20th Century Fox is with the Fox Broadcasting Station. On Tuesday last week, Fox showed scenes from the new Shrek movie during Glee. If 20th Century Fox is as close to Dreamworks Animation as the Fox Broadcasting Station, than in my opinion, it's a possibility! 🙂

  34. Jeditrojan says:

    NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. ShastaTheSecond says:

"So the clips don't end up online"? Are Walden and Fox kidding themselves? This VBS curriculum could have been the biggest thing for the movie next to the trailers and posters! (I'm only half-exaggerating, of course.)

  36. Lucy says:

ah, but 20th centary fox OWNS the fox station, doesn't it? Or am I getting mixed up?

  37. Skilletdude says:

I don't care about this either way. The trailers will do enough advertising for the film with these VBS movie clips.

Marketing to Christian audiences is always a double-edged sword. It may increase the amount of people interested in the movie but it also labels 'Narnia' as Christian films and encourages churches to preach to their congregation about seeing it. Why are churches being so blatantly used to sell movie tickets?

  38. narnian resident says:

well… at least they're protecting they're footage. cant blame them for that

  39. Lady Galadriel says:

But what is the difference between releasing footage on June 30 or August 16? It's just a difference of several weeks. It's all still several months before December 10. Could it be because maybe they want to go for a later push, closer to the film's release, in their advertising?

  40. wolfloversk says:

today is not the best of days

  41. always narnian says:

Hmmm…That's very interesting. Does this mean that trailers won't come out until August also?

  42. tenthofthatname says:

I totally meant to say I don't think they'd wait till August for a trailer. A poster is already out, the window of time from now until August is too long to capture interest with just posters.

  43. Puddleglum says:

My Lady, If anything we would think that the more "advertising" they get the better.
I just do not comprehend the human mind.

  44. Puddleglum says:

I believe that it has been anounced about a trailer coming out in three weeks.

  45. RuralNarniaFan says:

Actually they're both subsidiaries of FOX Broadcasting Inc, but subsidiaries of a corporation that big will often act very separately / differently.

  46. Elf Maiden Archer of Rivendell says:

I agree with you chirping bird. Catholics are indeed more Christian. (I practice the Traditional Roman Rite; the one that the everybody practiced before they changed it in 1962 ; the one that the Saints practiced.) Anyhoo, why can't Fox & Walden Meda post the clips on narnia.com, and ask us not to pirate them. What about the people who don't want the package, but want to see the VDT stuff!? Personally, I won't completely be let down. Hopefully they'll release a trailer before the package comes out.

  47. Rob W. Case says:

That's really stupid. They might as well have not made the product at all. Vacation Bible School (where I come from anyways) is usually in July, and regular school starts up like a week from the posted date.

By the time this program would be of any value, it would be of value in the summer of 2011, but by then the film will be out on DVD…. unless they watch the film and use the cirriculum immediately following.

  48. Kris says:

Well, when you're dumb ya gotta be tough…hope they know what they're doing…

  49. glumPuddle says:

I see a lot of value in keeping things wrapped up. I don't think this wil hurt Fox in the long run.

Marketing is basically a necessary evil. It really is a shame that director's are forced to reveal large chunks of their movie out of context. But if they didn't, of course, no one would go see it.

  50. glumPuddle says:

No. It just means the VBS clips won't be available until then.

  51. narnian1 says:

Alas! I agree with the marshwiggle, I don't think this will hurt Fox either, and I'd do it too if I were them actually. But I assume the trailer will be out before then. if they allow the footage to go public then, it's only because they have already given some of it in the trailer. my guess.

  52. Anna's Sister says:

    ditto!

  53. Anna's Sister says:

What's the difference between know and August. People are going to put the clips online no matter what month it is.
On the other hand I don't think this will hurt Fox, I just hope they come out with a trailer to make up for it.:)

  54. Because it works. LWW would not have been the huge success it was if so many churches had not embraced it and ended the long-time Disney boycott. As much as people dislike us 'holy rollers', they know the Church Card works.

  55. Eustace says:

Too bad, I hoping to suggest this VBS to a church and then help out.

  56. Eustace says:

I could still suggest it, but so, many people would already be done with VBS.

  57. KingSkandartheJust says:

Oh well… You have to expect delays.

  58. Unless, my Marshwiggle, they intend to hit viewers with a short but heavy blitz of advertising closer to the film release date.
