Advice: Auditioning For the Role of Jill Pole

Since the release of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, we at NarniaWeb have received almost daily inquiries about auditioning for the role of Jill Pole in The Silver Chair. After the release of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, these inquiries have risen to almost unbelievable levels. We wanted to take this opportunity to give some information about the film industry and answer the questions that folks may have about how to acquire a role.

Pre-Production and Greenlighting

Before casting begins for a film, there are several steps that take place. A script is written (or at least begun), the story is pitched to the studio, and the studio then “greenlights” the film, which means that the production is formally approved and financed. After the film is greenlit, it then enters pre-production, during which the script is finalized and plans are made for the actual shooting of the film. It is during this pre-production stage that casting is done.

Casting and Auditions

The casting process for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was somewhat unique in that casting director Pippa Hall held many public auditions when searching for the four Pevensie children. These auditions were generally held at schools around the UK, with children from the drama clubs being invited to attend. This is not typical, though, and usually a casting director will work directly with agents and industry contacts to come up with a list of potential actors to fill a specific role. Several actors are given auditions and the director and producers together decide which one will best play the part. This is the way that Will Poulter was cast for the role of Eustace.

Occasionally there will be open auditions for extras at a film location shoot. When that information becomes available we always post it at NarniaWeb.

Silver Chair Status

The future of the Narnia movies depends on the box office results for each film. If The Voyage of the Dawn Treader doesn’t do well enough in theaters, it is likely that there will not be any further Narnia films. If it is successful (and no one is sure exactly what the threshold of success is in the eyes of the studio), then Walden and Fox will likely move forward and attempt to get another Narnia film greenlit.

In interviews the producers have mentioned that they are considering The Silver Chair as well as The Magician’s Nephew for the next film. This could mean that The Silver Chair would be skipped or passed over temporarily, or that both films could be made at the same time. There are any number of possibilities, but the reality is that the future of the franchise and The Silver Chair is very much in limbo right now. It also goes without saying that production for The Silver Chair has not been greenlit and is not currently looking for any actors for the simple reason that there is no production.

Advice

If you are interested in auditioning for the role of Jill Pole or any other character in a Narnia film, the best advice that we can give is to 1) get involved with a local drama group to hone your skills and 2) hire an agent who can acquire an audition for you with the casting director when the time comes. There likely won’t be any public auditions. This is simply the way that Hollywood works.

Another question that we are often asked is about what the producers are looking for. Again, since there are no producers and no production (yet), we have no idea. During the casting process for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Pippa Hall was quoted as saying that she felt that there were so many brilliant British actors that there was no need to look for someone who could “fake” a British accent. So our expectation is that the producers would probably look to the UK first to fill the role of Jill Pole.

Conclusion

To sum this all up, The Silver Chair has not yet been greenlit so there are no roles yet to be filled. If you are interested in auditioning for a role when one becomes available, we recommend that you hire an agent who can acquire an audition for you when the time comes. Good luck!

Haha, Ya, I'd be a horrible Jill Pole, what with long RED hair and blue eyes and bad teeth. Not to mention I failed in all my drama projects =D. Good luck to everyone who tries for Jill!

  2. JR143 says:

How did you get your agent?

  3. JR143 says:

    I have bangs Too ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Gem says:

Actually in The Last Battle Jill is described as being pale and slight. And the illustrations in the books show her having short either dark blonde or light brown hair. Besides, she's supposed to look like someone born in England. But I think you and Lucia should think about trying for Aravis. She is described as looking rather Middle Eastern-Indian-Oriental, so you guys would be perfect!

  5. Gem says:

No auditions yet, as SC hasn't even been green-lit. But keep a close eye on Narniaweb, they'll tell us when and where open auditions, if they have them, are. And just go online and look up agents in your area. Give them a call or however you reach them, and/or send them a photo. I'm not the expert on this sort of stuff, I've only heard how you do it, but I don't think it's that hard. Good luck! You sound like a good Jill, although they might look for someone a little taller and a little older. But good luck to you all the same.

  6. Gem says:

Seriously?? No offense, but what makes you think that?? Jill is supposed to be a beat-up British schoolgirl. How on earth could they ever change who she is as Jill??

  7. Kate says:

    I'll second that. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Emilee says:

Well my agent is not near me I use to have an agent near me but the only agents that look for auditions out of country or in all states are in New York or LA. I live in the south so it is hard to have an agent that far way but you do what you got to do.My agent is in New York. BTW if you do live in the south or anywhere they have really noticable accents you have to take classes to not have an accent especially if is a southern one like mine. But go to bing and search model/talent agencys near you ,contact them and you will probably have to send pics and info then if they like you they will call you and set up a meeting!Hope this helped!:)

  9. Emilee says:

Oh yes well most ppl who have them in those cities move there but I live in the South and have not moved but yet has one.

  10. Emilee says:

Hey well you should tell your parents I mean parents cuz they will be the ones taking you to meet with them. And I wish I could help but I dont know how you would be able to find a talent agentcys in other countrys try finding one where you live and they will look in other countries when they auditions.

  11. Edmund's Queen says:

I think I have seen that one, yes , 'cause I remeber thinking "Yes you are cool like that Skandar!" I love it in blond cam when Andrew turns the camera on him. He does his hot smirk! That's like his trademark! lol. He's so Skandarlicious. Have you ever done the commentary on PC? You don't actually (ack-chellay) get to see him, but just heaing his voice is so lovely. *sigh*

  12. claireyy says:

can't they dye your hair or something? just wondering

  13. I am turning 16 and well what I said is what I said I would be proud of myself If I got this job by Auditioning for The Sliver Chair. And i'm probably the same hight as Jill Pole from the last Sliver Chair. So I hope i'm the person you'll need! But i'm not British so…

  14. JR143 says:

    Thanks! This helped so much!

  15. JR143 says:

Yeah probably, why do you ask?

  16. Is it possible to audition if ur an Indian………….
Pls say it is possible, I'll try my bst to audition this movie:):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)

  17. Niamh says:

hey guys-i'm hoping to audition for jill too! i don't have an agent but i think i might get one now. i'm fifteen (as of yesterday!!) and i've been to a drama club since i was four. i live in the uk but i don't think i'll get an audition because i don't have an agent and everyone sees jill as slim but i'm a bit fat.

  18. Queen Elizabeth says:

You should go on youtube and type in Skandar Keynes and Georgie Henley press conference. (There are a bunch of minute long clips each from a question during an interview) And there is one labled like The Final Scenes (I think) And he's like "I think it's worse when you watch them back in the end, and their all emotional." He starts fanning his face and his voice gets all high. (He was joking around) But I loved the sound of his voice. This is getting long now… You should watch it ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. Queen Elizabeth says:

Some day when we are adults or there is a Narnia convention. We will give each other our names and meet it a fabulous reunion. The Narnia Trio! And we can't forget Not of This World too ๐Ÿ™‚ If I'm in the film buisness by then you guys will totally have to get roles :)I'm actually (ack-chellay) might be attending a film camp this summer ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. Queen Elizabeth says:

Not EVERYONE living in England has a full blown Brittish accent. And this would give Americans a chance to audition too without feeling shunned for a faking a accent. And if they do fake it it could be a slight one so it doesn't sound so fake. Maybe this way people wouldn't lable the Narnia films as British, and get some new voices in there.
That is why the movies is BASED on the ADAPTAION of the book. It doesn't have to be exactly the same.

  21. Lisa Scott says:

  24. narniafan! says:

hello could someone help me please i really want to get an agent but i dont know how?! my mum said i cant have one until im 16 but i would LOVE to play jill could someone tell me when there would be an audition for her or do i HAVE to have an agent?!

  25. narniafan says:

Hi, thanks for posing this advice, Im 15 (I either look my age or younger) i have medium length wavey brown hair and brown eyes,i am indeed british. I ways i see that i am a little like jill but i dont go into all that detail right now. I have a little experience in drama, im studying drama gcse and i used to go to a drama club after school. acting as jill pole would be a dream come true for me, but i know that i wont get a chance because no one ever comes to our school, and i wont be able to get an agent anytime soon, so all i ask for is a chance, so come to pembrokeshire (wales). even if i fail, i'd be grateful for you giving me this chance to be apart of the movie, but im sure you'd pick the right person for her.

  26. Edmund's Queen says:

Dang, that's so cool! Some friends of mine (two brothers) are in the market for a professional camera and they've asked me to be thinking of a storyline for a movie. They've also said I could act in it. So, 2011 could be a busy year for me! ๐Ÿ™‚ I can't wait to meet you guys someday. We'll have to keep our eyes open for Narnia conventions. Or maybe we could all go to the London premier of HHB, if they make it.

  27. Edmund's Queen says:

As soon as I read your comment, I went and watched it…and every other press conference video. ๐Ÿ™‚ I LOVED how he's fanning himself. I about had to start fanning MYself, lol! His little laugh/chuckle is so cute. Have you ever noticed how he touches his lips a lot? I mean, have you ever seen that VDT interview with Georgie, Skandar and Will P.? They all look so tired, especially Skandar, and he keeps rubbing his mouth. It's so funny and kinda odd, ack-chellay.

  28. Edmund's Queen says:

oops, I didn't mean to post this hear. Sorry.

  29. Edmund's Queen says:

  30. claireyy says:

    just wondering
because if that's so then can't they just find a person thats suitable for this role and just change their appearance?

  31. Queen Elizabeth says:

Haha ๐Ÿ™‚ In another one he looks like he's thinking 'why am I with these kids'. Georgie and Will are answering every question and he is just sippin away on his water lol I this one he plays with his sweater a lot, and has his head in his hand. Haha, he looks bored. He's probably tired of answering the same questions 50 times.

  32. Queen Elizabeth says:

I posted back to this comment on the other page Ooops. ๐Ÿ™‚ Let's continue our conversations right here so things don't get confusing. (I know… it's confusing) lol

  33. thesilverchair says:

@Lisa Scott an acting agent? who ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

  34. Edmund's Queen says:

I know. Georgie's probably getting tired of it too. I've heard her talk about how VDT mixes comedy, adventure, emotion at least four times. Only, she doesn't show her boredom as much as Skandar, lol. He's very figety. I'm like that too. I'm always playing with my hands and fingers in church lol.

  35. Edmund's Queen says:

Ooops, I just now responded to your comment on the other page! LOL! Sorry. This is more confusing than Narnian royalty! Anywho, what is the interview where Skandar plays with his sweater? I want to watch it.

  36. Queen Elizabeth says:

Same here, I'm one of those people who can't sit still. In church my grandma always gives me gun to keep me occupied. Or I doodle lol Yea they always get asked the same five questions. How did you feel about leaving, tell us about newcomer Will, Tell us about your character…. blah blah blah. lol

  37. cloggs says:

    hi everyone
i am 16 i live in london and have always wanted to act. i have loved the narnia books and films from a young age and belive that i could be a good contender for the role of jill pole.( as i have english accent) Im a normal school girl but want to break in to the industry and have had expirence on stage and other work . i have gloden blonde hair sholder length( natural ) and blue eyes. love to know whether you agree or whether you think i am a good contender .

  38. Queen Elizabeth says:

The one titled (Mis-haps on set) is funny. And yes, Skandar seems to touch himself a lot lol (that sounds odd) The one where he fiddles with his sweater I can't find. But he does a lot of picking lint off it and biting his nails lol He looks tired. I'm pretty sure those interviews take place right after a premier and in that room all the people who want inteviews take turns, so they could have been sitting in there for hours. I know that was the case with the one with all three of them.

  39. Queen Elizabeth says:

CRAP! My reply to this is on the other page too! ๐Ÿ™ Ok – from now on, reply here. lol

  40. Edmund's Queen says:

You sound like the Jill I've always imagined in physical appearance. I'm 16 also, and would love to play Jill, but I would have to get some accent coaching 'cause I'm American. I've only recently begun acting, but I love it. Are you involved in any drama programs? If not, that's a good place to start. There's more to being Jill than looks. May the best Jill win! ๐Ÿ™‚

  41. Edmund's Queen says:

Ok, I finally got it right. LOL. What you said about fidgeting in church, your grandma has to give you "gun"? You meant "gum" didn't you? When I first read it I was like "What the heck!" lol
Anywho, I've watched some more Skandar interviews, and have you seen the one from a few years ago with him and William Moseley? Skandar, talking about Peter, says, "'Cause he' so arrogant, and stuck up," He's so funny! Have you seen the one from like two weeks ago (I think it's Pix or something like that) in NYC. He talks about the film, (for the billionth time, poor darling) and he says "ack-chellay" I loved it! Sorry so long; there's just so many things to say about him. ๐Ÿ™‚

  42. the other Pevensie girl says:

To Edmund's Queen and Queen Elizabeth: For reasons beyond my comprehension, I've posted four replies to the conversation on the last page that have. Failed. To. Show. Up. Anywhere. >.< Haha, I do hope that you don't think that I've forgotten you!

  43. the other Pevensie girl says:

HUZZAH! This one has posted. *happy dance* ๐Ÿ˜€

  44. Charley_Jill says:

I am 13, blonde hair blue eyes and from britain. I am grade 5 at my acting but i don't have an agent. I did attend acting classes but i now attend musical theatre classes instead. I would love to play the role of Jill but i probably won't be able to audition because i don't have an agent.

  45. cloggs says:

well ive been acting since i was about 12 that when i got noticed in a drama lesson by someone doing a advert/ commercial for t.v and they wanted me to have the part and ever since the experience of being in front of the camera i have loved it and i have done a few more things since on stage but really im just a normal school girl trying to break in to acting like the other actors who have played lead roles the in the narnia films . i just need a chance and i think i would possibly make a good jill ๐Ÿ™‚

  46. Cait says:

I'm the same as u. I'm 12, blond hair blue eyes, but my parent won't get me an agent! they don't realise how much I'd love to do to be an actress!!!! But I proberbley won't get the part any way. I never get chosen for anything. ๐Ÿ™

  47. Narnia Fan To The Stars says:

Hiya my name is megan wayne and i am 14 years old.I have brown hair and green eyes and am 5'2.I come from a little place called wakefield near leeds where there isnt much oppertunity fot things like this.I dont have an agent but i have been in shows at the theatre and played the leads in most school plays and go to a drama group.I have always wanted to act and have loved all the narnia books and films.I think i would be a good jill pole because i have a good english accent and am just a normal schoolgirl who just wants a shot at been in one of the best films ever.I dont have a agent but have always wanted to act.If i did this it would open up so many things for me and make a great impact on my life please consider me as jill pole :)x

  48. Narnian Rose says:

I think I could play Jill pole. I am: 4'9ish, I am thirteen years old, a medium brunnet, I have have an amazing British accent, I have read all the books like 4-5 times, I've seen all the movies, and I have been on stage practicly all my life! I think I would be perfect for the role. What do you tink could I make it?

  49. Shayna Ruffle says:

Hey my name is shayna im 12 and i really want this part so badly i have perforemd in the west end in "Annie" and i got the part of "Pepper" and i was hoping if any one knows were the adutions are could they please please contact me my email is shaynaruffle98@hotmail.co.uk thanks a buch love from shayna

  50. Wishing4JillPole says:

they really need to do the horse and his boy! that was the best book!

  51. Wishing4JillPole says:

i am a really dark blond with hazel eyes. i am really skinny at 5'9. i can do a really good British accent, and have had some acting experience (all having British accents). love all the books- been reading them since I was 5! and have read each about 15 times! i have seen all of the movies multiple times- 1st and 2nd at least 10 times, but only seen 3rd twice- tickets are too expensive! i would love to be Jill!

  52. Wishing4JillPole says:

where in the south are you?

  53. cloggs says:

i know saying this i maybe getting a few peoples backs up but i do think that they should cast a english girl for jill pole. because all the characters before have been and also why would u want someone putting on a english accent if you could just cast someone who actully has one and its the real deal ?.

  54. Queen Elizabeth says:

Yes I've seen both of those!! ๐Ÿ™‚ (and yes I meant gum) I love the one with him and WillMo ๐Ÿ™‚ He's like (skandar talking about his character) "Edmund's real character and plot is with Peter and how he isn't appreciated because he is so aragant and such a horrible person… and he's always saving william."

    Will "Saving William ha!

Skandar: What happens at the very beginning of the film?

Will: Maybe a couple of times…

Skandar: I think a little more than that.

Love his sense of humor! LOVE IT! lol

  55. Narnian Rose says:

The reason they might could be that they want an actress that is a nobody. That way they can pay them as little as possible. Besides some girls learn accents fairly quicky. Like me, I get it from my mom she picks up accents quickly. I dont take verry long either, my parents even say that I sound like Georgie Henly. So they might just pick an average girl like you and me.

  56. cloggs says:

i defo agree that the person should be a normal girl ,so that they give poeple like you and me a chance in the acting world. and all of the others who have played lead roles werent well known before and they were great. but i do think that the actress should be english so that the accent is perfect and doesnt hvae like a little twinge of something else.

  57. QueenLucyPevensie says:

I would love the part for Jill, and I have the requirements, other than being English, but there's a problem with the whole agent thing. Where I live, talent agents are non existent. Where would I get an agent? Without those, you can't get into movies.

  58. I wish to much says:

I think ( if anyone cares to listen) that they should give Americans a chance just the same as British accent! Without us there wouldn't be as much money to there movie in the first place. I'm not trying to be rude it just seems that they think us Americans across the pond can't pull one of there bloody British accents!

  59. QueenLucyPevensie says:

I completely agree. We should have as much of a chance as people in the UK.

  60. I narnian queen says:

I agree with I wish you are right! I've dreamt Of being Jill pole my hole lifer ever since I read the books. I pray God almighty king of kings will bless me and every person with a dream to at least get a chance in America or anywhere else to try out for the part. God bless you I wish and everyone else with a dream!

    P.s. Happy new year!!!!

P.S.s. I hope people in charge will reconsider
