Advice: Auditioning For the Role of Jill Pole

Since the release of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, we at NarniaWeb have received almost daily inquiries about auditioning for the role of Jill Pole in The Silver Chair. After the release of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, these inquiries have risen to almost unbelievable levels. We wanted to take this opportunity to give some information about the film industry and answer the questions that folks may have about how to acquire a role.

Pre-Production and Greenlighting

Before casting begins for a film, there are several steps that take place. A script is written (or at least begun), the story is pitched to the studio, and the studio then “greenlights” the film, which means that the production is formally approved and financed. After the film is greenlit, it then enters pre-production, during which the script is finalized and plans are made for the actual shooting of the film. It is during this pre-production stage that casting is done.

Casting and Auditions

The casting process for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was somewhat unique in that casting director Pippa Hall held many public auditions when searching for the four Pevensie children. These auditions were generally held at schools around the UK, with children from the drama clubs being invited to attend. This is not typical, though, and usually a casting director will work directly with agents and industry contacts to come up with a list of potential actors to fill a specific role. Several actors are given auditions and the director and producers together decide which one will best play the part. This is the way that Will Poulter was cast for the role of Eustace.

Occasionally there will be open auditions for extras at a film location shoot. When that information becomes available we always post it at NarniaWeb.

Silver Chair Status

The future of the Narnia movies depends on the box office results for each film. If The Voyage of the Dawn Treader doesn’t do well enough in theaters, it is likely that there will not be any further Narnia films. If it is successful (and no one is sure exactly what the threshold of success is in the eyes of the studio), then Walden and Fox will likely move forward and attempt to get another Narnia film greenlit.

In interviews the producers have mentioned that they are considering The Silver Chair as well as The Magician’s Nephew for the next film. This could mean that The Silver Chair would be skipped or passed over temporarily, or that both films could be made at the same time. There are any number of possibilities, but the reality is that the future of the franchise and The Silver Chair is very much in limbo right now. It also goes without saying that production for The Silver Chair has not been greenlit and is not currently looking for any actors for the simple reason that there is no production.

Advice

If you are interested in auditioning for the role of Jill Pole or any other character in a Narnia film, the best advice that we can give is to 1) get involved with a local drama group to hone your skills and 2) hire an agent who can acquire an audition for you with the casting director when the time comes. There likely won’t be any public auditions. This is simply the way that Hollywood works.

Another question that we are often asked is about what the producers are looking for. Again, since there are no producers and no production (yet), we have no idea. During the casting process for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Pippa Hall was quoted as saying that she felt that there were so many brilliant British actors that there was no need to look for someone who could “fake” a British accent. So our expectation is that the producers would probably look to the UK first to fill the role of Jill Pole.

Conclusion

To sum this all up, The Silver Chair has not yet been greenlit so there are no roles yet to be filled. If you are interested in auditioning for a role when one becomes available, we recommend that you hire an agent who can acquire an audition for you when the time comes. Good luck!

  3. Braden Woodburn says:

This is a wonderful update. I am sure Dawn Treader has done very well so far so I have faith. but I do hope they do The Silver Chair NEXT and THEN do The Magician's Nephew. Otherwise it could throw people who haven' read the books off.

  4. Gem says:

It would throw people more who haven't read the books to do MN after SC. I mean, that's so completely random. They are already doing the movies in the order that the books were published in, so to mess it up would be ridiculous. And by the way, why are the people who haven't read the books so important? People who have read the books are the true fans of the true Narnia.

  5. Pepper Darcy says:

ha, ha! I'd NEVER play a badguy 🙂 Nah! I don't look like Tilda though my hair's blonde… and thin… and I'm thin… (ugh… great! I'm more White/Witch material than Jill Pole material! LOL:) Maybe the LotGK has problems with wanting to rush up and hug Aslan? Cuz that'd be *MY* problem playing LotGK, I'd always be trying to sneak hugs when I should be trying to destroy Narnia 🙂 LOL!

  6. Edmund's Queen says:

Good idea guys; I'll be praying too. With God, all things are possible. Never lose hope. 🙂

  7. Edmund's Queen says:

Wouldn't it be so awesome if God brought us together here for a reason? Like, maybe we're all meant to do some movie or something together. "we have an extraordinary destiny, something greater than we could've imagined…" 🙂

  8. always narnian says:

Pepper you're so Lucyish! 🙂 If you were ever any Narnian character, it'd have to be Lucy! I think I could probably play a badguy….Yikes…that's sad 🙁

  9. Edmund's Queen says:

Maybe… you can never tell just what those folks will be looking for. You could be the fortold to play Aravis. 🙂

  10. Edmund's Queen says:

You'll turn 16 in july, just like Georgie! I'll turn 17. I just this September got involved in my local drama program and last weekend I was in the production of A Christmas Carol. I LOVED it! Acting is so much fun.

  11. Edmund's Queen says:

Me too. Not of this World, I like your user name! You seem like a cool guy. It's great meeting people on here!

  12. Gem says:

yeah, I guess you really don't look like Jill or the Emerald Witch. Sorry!

  13. Not Of This World says:

Thanks Edmund's Queen! I think you and Princess Jennifer seem pretty cool too 🙂

  14. Olivia Hall says:

Hi, My name is Olivia Hall i am 11 years old, i have medium length brown hair, brown eyes and are 5"1 but do not go to a drama group or club, bu i am really despirate to audition, i have dreamt about auditioning for narnia as soon as the first movie came out, i would love to audition for the role of Jill Pole but do i have to go to a drama group to even stand a chance of auditioning. PLease does anyone have any info?

  15. natasha says:

im like almost the exact same as u i am 11 almost 12 and have always dreamt of playing jill 2 i have light brown hair and hazel eyes but i have drama experience im working so hard on my accent i hope we both have good luck!!!

  16. debbie says:

I doubt that the silver chair will be made because the movie has only taken 185million in worldwide box office receiptS (as of 24/12/10) and remember it cost 150million to make plus probably another 30-50million in advertisments and prints. In my opinion it would have had to make nearer the 300million mark at the worldwide box office for a further movie to be made, so i think the series will end here, which breaks my heart because i would love to see one more movie (silver chair) but i doubt it now. I hope im wrong or else the only other way it would be greenlit is if dawn teader makes over 150million in dvd sales but you'll have to wait until well into next year to see if that happens, so fingers crossed.

  17. Braden Woodburn says:

Well of course the people who read things before they turn them into films are the true fans but let's face it, hardly anyone ever reads these days. But yes, they have gone in order BUT completely missed "The Horse and His Boy" which technically was still part of "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" in the end whenever the Pevensies were adults. Which is why I think they shouldn't even make it as a film because I for one disliked that book and could not see that if it was a film I most likely wouldn't watch. So, definetly "The Silver Chair" should be next, because it is what follows in order after "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader", then "The Magician's Nephew" to take us back to the VERY beginning of it all and to give the main actors to age older in real life, then bring them all back in "The Last Battle" to finish the series. I dunno, just feel that seems more logic and easier.

  18. Alambil and Tarvis says:

You're forgetting that it hasn't even hit the Christmas holiday yet. In terms of the U.S. at least (which is where the studios look most to judge box office success of films) the majority of public school students just got off school as of yesterday or two days ago. Because so many families will be off work/school in the next week, movie theaters are going to see a bigger rush of customers. Hopefully this is good news for VDT. LWW went up in earnings during the Christmas/New Year's rush because of the condition I just mentioned. Hardly anyone is going to take the time to go see a film with the family when the kids are probably swamped with final exams and the parents are swamped with work and shopping to finish before Christmas Day. Once the hassle is out of the way, there's more free time.

Plus, there are also the snowstorms to consider. The lack of financial success for VDT in the UK is most likely due to the fact that there's been so much snow. Heathrow airport has been closed for I believe a week now. My guess is that all of London is having transportation issues just within the city. Also, the midwest U.S. has had some bad snowstorms recently, which may account for the lack of viewings. In terms of all the movies in general that have just been released, none of them are doing exceptionally well, really. Tron didn't even break the 50 million mark its first weekend, which is somewhat surprising given the fact that it was marketed so much.

Just be glad VDT didn't open last year. It would've been doomed due to the excess of snow in the Northeastern U.S. alone. O_o

And personally, I have now contributed probably around 80 U.S. dollars just for myself on seeing the film, and I've dragged friends along each time. The first time I saw it I had more than ten people come (and we saw it in 3D) which is over $150. The thing that is going to help the franchise is if FANS SEE VDT REPEAT TIMES AND BRING PEOPLE WITH THEM. That's a big part of what has kept it alive despite the setbacks. If fans just give up now, then there was NO POINT TO THE MOVIES EVER BEING MADE. A good fandom needs to have loyal supporters who will stick by it no matter what the odds are against it.

  19. Pepper Darcy says:

Always, ah! that's sweet! Thanks! I love Lucy to death! 🙂 But I wouldn't say you're badguy material! 🙂

Gem, hey, that's okay! I am built at least similar to Tilda 🙂 (besides, you didn't offend me) 🙂

  20. Hwin says:

I think that the wonderful performance Will P. did as Eustace is reason enough to do SC next. He will be too grown up otherwise!

  21. Queen Elizabeth says:

I'm liking the sound of that 🙂 But we all live so far away, maybe in the future when we are out of college we fill randomly run into each other at a narnia convention or something lol

  22. Queen Elizabeth says:

I'm glad you are on here Not of This World. 🙂 You are one of the few guys on here, that seems mature and has a love for Narnia. I am happy to call you my internet friend lol (I've made so many good friends on here in just the last couple weeks, and we all love Narnia!) 🙂

  23. Not Of This World says:

I have to agree. This weeks numbers are going to be great.

  24. Not Of This World says:

Thanks! That means a lot to me Queen Elizabeth. 🙂

  25. Fan 4 Narnia says:

I'm 15, blonde wavy hair, and have dreamed of playing Jill Pole. I have a little drama experience (no agent, though) and can fake a really good british accent. I think it would be good for the producers to look for a Narnia fan who will bring real love to the role instead of just some actress who has probably never read the books before! So, I'm open!!!!!!!!! And I also think it would be cool if they could have an American in the movies.

  26. Princess Jennifer says:

You never know !!!! That was a cool idea Edmond's Queen !!! I wonder if like Queen Elizabeth said we would meet !! That would be so cool !! And by the way, this IS me !! I hope that "Handsome " guy doesn"t come back !!! What on earth was he talking about ?

  27. Queen C The Gentle says:

I've decided to make a scrapbook for the narnian cast so that I can remember the good memories of these past 5 years. Anyone have any ideas?

  28. narniafan says:

i am 14 and everyone tells me that i look like emma watson when she was my age but acting in the narnia movies has always been my dream. i wish so much that i at least could be an extra but i live in the u.s. so there's not much chance of that.

  29. Princess Jennifer says:

I"m glad you"re here too !!:ike Queen Elizabeth said, it"s nice to have a matured young man on here !! ( instead of that jerk so called "Handsome ") How old are you ? Are you in the teen club ? Just curious . Merry Christmas !!!

  30. Princess Jennifer says:

    Really ? Then I am too !!! Screen hug !!! lol !!!

  31. Queen Elizabeth says:

I might not be able to write on here until after Christmas (like later on Christmas day) so I would like to say HAPPY CHRISTMAS! I hope you all have a wonderful time, and I can't wait to talk to you guys later. 🙂

  32. Emilee says:

I am 16 long brown wavy hair and has an agent and drama classes. I do not speak in an British tone but can learn. My agent is looking 24/7 for any auditions for the role of Jill!(: Wish me luck!

  33. Princess Jennifer says:

Oh, It"s ok !!! That will probably be my case too. VERY busy on cooking today !! No Snow though. Sigh……. Maybe Tommorrow. Well Merry Christmas to you too !! And Merry Christmas to Edmond"s Queen too !!! I hope you have a Blessed Christmas and I can"t wait to talk to you guys again!!! Merry Christmas !!!

  34. Nesselphie says:

    Hiya Gem!
I apparently look like Dakota Blue Richards but older… haha! and my hair is less curly… but it's still wavy 🙂
hopefully the auditions will be before i turn 18.. .hmmm…
    Merry Christmas! 😀
    xx

  35. Narnia Fanatic says:

I would desperately love to have to role in a Narnia movie! I grew up reading the books, and they are my favorite movies. I am English but live in America and can do a British accent very well. I am 17 but I look younger than my age. Most people think that I am 14 or 15. I have long wavy brown hair and brown eyes. I have grown up doing plays and dinner theatres, so I am not shy of the stage. I love to act and would love to audition for the role of Jill!

  36. Pepper Darcy says:

you know, all the kids who played in Narnia really were fans of the book? They read them and loved them to death 🙂 It's not their fault though if the movie doesn't follow the book 🙂 They're just doing what they're supposed to do 🙂 But just in case you didn't know, the kids *do* love the books 🙂

  37. The Drama Queen says:

Yeah, I know, Georgie is 6 days older then me. When I saw LWW for the first time, I went home and did some research on the actors and was like "I could of auditioned for Lucy I am the same age!" But at that time I hadn't been involved in drama. But as you can see from my username, it's a passion of mine. I hope I have a shot… My teacher's son has been in like 4 movies, so I am going to talk to him about where he started and how he got an agent, am I am going to rock the casting directors socks!! God Bless!!

  38. Pepper Darcy says:

I can definately say right now… if I tried out for Jill Pole… I would *NOT* get the role… to many other great people here auditioning! 🙂

  39. The Drama Queen says:

If somebody has experience acting talent, and can do accents well, they can usually do different levels of accents. I have been involved with acting classes for some time now, and I can do a really intense British accent, and a more subtle one, it all depends on how "British" the director wants you to sound. By listening to LWW, PC, and VODT, It seems like each movie, the accents become thicker, possibly because they are getting older, but even Ben and William M. were grown up, and their accents became thicker. Just my opinion. God Bless!!

  40. the other Pevensie girl says:

Amen! It's good to know I'm not alone haha. Oh, and Merry Christmas! 😀

  41. the other Pevensie girl says:

Wow, that's awesome! Good luck to you! 😀

  42. Narnian Meerkat says:

My SISTER SHOULD BE JILL POLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hahahahhahaha. . .

  43. Narnia101 says:

Hi I'm Hannah and I'm 13 years old. I live in the US and cannot produce a British accent at all. I have blond hair and blue-green eyes. I have grown up reading and listaning to the Narnia series. I have some acting experience and I wish to take acting classes, come next year. I would really like to act as Jill Pole in S.C. but I doubt I ever could. But its my passion to act, especialy in a Narnia film. Anyone have any suggestions, comments, or help they could provide me with?

  44. Edmund's Queen says:

I know that was really odd. You know, girls, though we may not ever meet each other in this world, we shall meet in Aslan's country…Heaven! I looked out my window early this morning and saw a beautiful bright golden light in the sky. It was likely Venus or some morning star, but at first I seriously think Christ was returning. It was really thrilling!

  45. Edmund's Queen says:

Oops, I meant to say "thought" instead of "think". Anyway, PJ, what Handsome, or whoever that was, was talking about isn't really something that should be spoken of on Narnia Web. It's what some people may call "adult content."

  46. Edmund's Queen says:

I just had to do a *screen hug* too. Merry Christmas Eve!

  47. Edmund's Queen says:

I have never forgotten Puddleglum! I am a bit concerned about it, but if they do it right, he'll be so cool! He's part of why I like the Silver Chair so much!

  48. Braden Woodburn says:

Oh yeah for sure. I mean, seeing recent interviews since the movie has been finished filming he already looks alot older and mature in person now than how youngish looking he was in the film. I'm not sure how long the time difference between Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Silver Chair are but I think I saw a Narnia & Earth timeline and Voyage of the Dawn Dreader was during the summer 1942 and then The Silver Chair in Autumn 1942 so like, 2 or 3 months has past on Earth where as it is like 50 years in Narnia because Caspian is now an old man.

  49. yeswelovenarnia says:

wow i am surprised at how many people on here have agents!! Thats crazy! I wish I could get one…I desperatly want to be in a Narnia film…*sigh* that will probably never happen 🙁

  50. Edmund's Queen says:

So your birthday is the 15th? Mine's the day before! Cool. That's amazing about your teacher's son. I wish you the best of luck for the auditions, whenever they may be.

  51. Edmund's Queen says:

Not of this World, Queen Elizabeth, and Princess Jennifer, you all are my Narnia Best Buds! I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas. I look forward to talking to you guys afterwards!

  52. Jana says:

🙂 I play in one film, but i was one second in this film!!! 😀 but I play in my school Snow White..:-)

  53. Not Of This World says:

Merry Christmas to all and to all, good day!

  54. Louloudi the Centaur says:

Well, I do read a lot, so that would most certainly help pass the time. 🙂

  55. The Drama Queen says:

I was on a interview website for will, and it said he is 5'5… but he may have grown… who knows?

  56. The Drama Queen says:

Oops… fail math attempt… my bday is on the 18th. LOL. I know I thought it was really cool that her son acted in movies… though, he was in twilight, which doesn't really float my boat. HAHA. Thank you for your support, you have NO IDEA how much I want this (actually you probably do…) I have been acting parts out of the book on my free time… and I look alot like how people picture her, which is good!! Let's hope for the best!! God Bless!

  57. The Drama Queen says:

Just a quick poll… what is everybody's estimate on when the auditions will be?

  58. The Drama Queen says:

Well if you can't produce a british accent, that is one of the first things to work on. Watch alot of english movies, like narnia and harry potter (those are my favorites). Also, you will want to get into some acting classes and plays and such to get some experience, and an agent. Then, nobody really knows what will happen next, i guess it just snowballs from there… I will hopefully see you at auditions! God Bless!!

  59. yerin says:

    Country and age is free?

  60. Princess Jennifer says:

You too Edmund"s Queen !!! I can"t wait to hear from you again !!!! Merry Christmas !!!!
