Concept Art: The Lady of the Green Kirtle’s Lair

It is generally known that The Lady of the Green Kirtle appeared in early versions of the screenplay for The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

Below is a piece of concept art that NarniaFans came across on Federico D’Alessandro’s website. It appears to show the Lady of the Green Kirtle’s throne room. As for the Lady herself, my guess is they just threw an image of the White Witch in there as a temporary placeholder. Caspian is clearly a placeholder because he is wearing exactly the same armor he wore in Prince Caspian.

    First Comment!
That's pretty amazing! It looks a lot like it was supposed to look, especially the mushroom things. Except that LotGK didn't have an actual throne room, (unless it was in the palace where Rillian was kept) I'd say they did a really good job.

  2. Puzzle2005 says:

Sorry if I'm being a wet blanket here, but isn't it sad that we've come to this (ie make ourselves contented with news of no practical consequence)?! In an ideal world, the 4th Narnia movie must've been released by now and we should've been (heatedly!) exchanging views on how the film turns out…

  3. Twinimage says:

A very pretty image. Glad she didn't appear in the movie. Not that it mattered much, cause most of the movie wasn't that good. 🙁

  4. PepperDarcy says:

wait– is… I don't get it. Is it official art or… what? Are they *planning* on making another… or… what? At least we have The Hobbit to look forward to… and BBC Sherlock Season Three and HTTYD 2.

Gosh I would have loved to see The Silver Chair… :'(

This does look fantastic, but it just makes me sad there might not be a The Silver Chair– it was my absolute favourite!! :'(

  5. PepperDarcy says:

you're very right for being sad– I agree. I wanted to see The Silver Chair SO bad… especially after VotDT :'(

  6. PepperDarcy says:

it looks a little bit like a 'sea' palace which is interesting– since VotDT had the green mist and was a sea voyage– I wonder if the 'sea/coral reef motifs' had anything to do with *that* if so… it's bloody brilliant, and jsut makes me more sad about the movie never being made :'(

Interesting twist on the 'look' 🙂 and rather clever

  7. Jenn1 says:

I never quite pictured the throne room of the underworld like that really, I thought it more like along the lines as a chamber from a any sort of castle, but than again maybe that was in part from the drawings from the books. But as I look at this picture, it looks alot like the White Witch's style and design in LWW but in 'green'. (just my POV)

Which I'm not going to bring up the whole the White Witch/Jadis and the Green Lady/Witch are one in the same, which some believe that some don't. Through personally I do, though it seemed Lewis teased on it, I 'think' he said himself they're not. Which speaking of, does that mean the The Lady of the Green Kirtle would be portrayed by a completely different actress most likely, since they wanted to have a younger Jadis in the Magician's Nephew?

I have to agree, that no doubt had they made the SC we would no doubt would have seen a movie by now, Will Poulter would be a little bit too old to play Eustace now, unless they somehow do the movie within this year. Though they'd have to do that and all but nearly do the Last Battle nearly about two years later or so, in part the books have Eustace and Jill at 16, but I don't know if he could do it now at the age of 21, he's about what, 19 now which is nearly the same age as William in PC and Skandar Keynes at 18.

  8. Just Queen, not High Queen says:

It looks awesome, but not what I imagined. Still looks really cool. I love the concept art. I still have hope we'll see SC someday. We'll just have to wait, like the Pevensies.

  9. Emilyn Writer says:

The pools of water remind me of the Magician's Nephew…
    The picture looks beautiful!

  10. Michael says:

It looks pretty interesting…not quite how I imagined it though. The room looks too full of life.
It's supposed to be a witch in an underground room, with lots of caves and tunnels outside the room. There wouldn't be so much life (plants, water, water plants)????
I always imagined it as being a much darker place and hardly inviting at all.
I don't think I would have been very happy if this is what the final outcome would have looked like if they had made SC.

  11. Michael says:

My brother said that with LOTR there was a lot of contrast between the good and evil side. I don't see that kind of contrast here. The room should be much darker to show that evil does reside there.

For those interested in Concept Art, there is a whole raft of artwork, storyboards and animatics for VDT posted in this thread here:

    http://forum.narniaweb.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2779

There are many many pieces there which relate to the "leaked script" era of the movie, including the artwork above, and many equally intriguing pieces which hint at numerous scenes very different to the final movie. Go check them out and feel free to comment and add any new finds!

  13. Dylan says:

Is it just me but when you click the picture and it shows a close up, the figure standing in the back near the thorne (presumably the LoTGK, looks a LOT like the White Witch. Don't get me wrong, it shouldn't be her at all, but was that what they were planning for the movie? To the White Witch return one more time? Interesting concept art. I really hope this is made into a movie.

  14. Dylan says:

It makes sense for Prince Caspian to be a place holder for Rilian, but was the White witch just a place holder, or were they intending to use her in SC?

  15. Aslan's BFF says:

Have to say, I certainly didn't imagine the Lady of the Green Kirtle's lair to be so life-like. In the book it sounded like some kind of underground-cave-like sort of deal. Not so green. But hey, if it means another film…!

Now, I don't think that throne room would be where the Lady will keep Rilian. That just doesn't sound right. But perhaps the room in the picture has a silver chair somewhere in it, or at least something to do with it.

I'm not exactly /against/ Tilda Swinton playing the Lady, but I don't think the Lady and the White Witch are the same woman. (weird grammar, but whatever) Maybe someone younger for the Lady. It would have to be someone who is around Rilian's age because they're "supposed" to get married, in the Lady's mind.

P.s. What are we supposed to make of this concept art, anyway?

  16. We need another Narnia movie bad! I'm glad we have the books, but a movie would be great. But we have to wait. I don't know the legalities, but it sure is hurting us. It's like it's always winter and never Christmas. The art work was great and got my imagination a going. Oh,well, wait I will.

  17. glumPuddle says:

The LotGK was in early versions of the VDT screenplay. The above artwork was done for VDT. *shudders*

  18. Jake says:

Well, well, well, so we get our first glance at the LGK! Can't wait for both MN and SC to come out!

  19. Dylan says:

I thought of this as being the place where Rilian is lured to, not the underground place.

  20. True King of Narnia says:

WOW, its amazing, quite close to how i imagined it. I really Want SC to be first.

  21. Louloudi the Centaur says:

Cool artwork. Saw it a few weeks ago, and some more concept art from the same artist.

Yes, I do agree that the White Witch is a place holder for the Lady of the Green Kirtle, but I think Prince Caspian might actually just be holding a place for King Caspian. How much of the leaked script actually came out? Wasn't it only like 1/3 of it? Maybe Caspian did play some part in meeting up with the Green Lady at one part of the script we didn't see? I really do not think he is place holding for Rilian.

  22. Dylan says:

In my opinion it shoulda beeen in the movie, that way they would've had a justification for the green mist. Otherwise the whole green mist thing doesn't make sense. I hated the fact that VDT was so off the book, but I would have been fine if that was in the movie.

  23. Beth says:

Wow, I SO have always imagined her lair in the Underworld as being some kind of stereotypical Hell. Caves, fire, darkness… After all, Puddleglum does stick his foot in a fire… The concept art is pretty, but not at all what I thought.

I hadn't thought about how the green mist would have made sense with her being in the VDT film. That would work. If they had done it, I would have stopped complaining about how pointless it was, because that would foreshadow the kidnapping.

Silver Chair is my favorite book. I wish they were making/had made it 🙁

  24. Erk says:

Still doesn't make me like the green mist stuff any better.

  25. PepperDarcy says:

glumpPuddle– oh…. OH… *now* I get it. Thanks for clarifying…

THEY WERE GONNA PUT HER IN VOTDT?! What the DICKENS?! *faints* that's not right!! *facepalm* no-wonder it looks nautical… oh dear…

  26. Violamom says:

Good grief, guys, don't you read?? The paragraph above the picture clearly states as much. I think it's beautiful, but it only makes me grieve all the more that we'll never get to see Will Poulter's Eustace in The Silver Chair. *sigh* 🙁 <><

  27. QueenLucytheValient says:

It's awesome, wish we could actually see it on screen.

  28. Narnia #1 Fan says:

    So Awesoome! 😀

  29. Sui-Lun says:

Oh my god. That is so amazing!! Although it's not what I first imagined, it's actually better! It's so evilly magical!!!!

  30. glumPuddle says:

I'm very grateful they didn't make SC. I was just talking to another NWebber who summed it up perfectly: Suspian was the tip of the iceberg…VDT was the sinking of the Titanic…so I shudder to think what SC would have been.

Sounds like the series was going in a really terrible direction. As awful as VDT was, it looks like it could have been worse.

  31. nic says:

I'm also glad Lady of the Green Kirtle wasn't in VODT and that the Green Mist doesn't have to be hers.
Conceptually i thought the Green Mist for VODT is a good thematic progression from PC to LW&W to potentially Magician's Nephew in terms of an over all Narnia arc bridging the films cinematically and being able to be then continued to LoGK for Silver Chair, then to Last Battle.
But it wasn't developed beyond being a reason to care about finding the lost lords & their swords, given to them by Aslan (at some time before Prince Caspian movie & not related to anything we know about the Telmarines from the plot of PC at all )

  32. nic says:

It's a great piece of art work all the same, would maybe work well as a setting where we see Rillian getting enchanted by the Lady of the Green Kirtle at the start of Silver Chair.

  33. farsight-mssngr says:

    That's very Magnificent!
Although, their plans didn't work out in VDT. I guess the reason they did the Green Mist in VDT is that it represents the Lady of the Green Kirtle that will be revealed in SC. I think they should continue make SC next rather than MN for us to realise the representation of the green mist. That can be a Turning Point to rise up again Narnia in the box-office (maybe).
But I must say this: They should make more Narnia movies and they should do it with no exception from the book itself, don't change the story they must!
    Further Up for Narnia 4!

  34. Son of Neptune says:

Any of you seen that new ABC show "Once Upon a Time"? That evil queen would be good for the LotGK.

  35. Son of Neptune says:

The movies gave the Narnian universe more history and background than C.S. Lewis did. I think that it's stupid that he made a world that only lasted for about 2575 years or so, right? On the whole, Tolkien's world was better.

  36. Dylan says:

I agree Glumpuddle, the Suspian thing started it all. This is what happens when you let people take a classic book and turn it into a movie. They want it to be more then what it is. They want it to be epic, have to many "love" scenes, and thank goodness they dind't go through with the Lucy/Caspian crush thing. That would have wrecked it for me (not that it isn't already wrecked).

  37. Dylan says:

And to add on to my comment above, I think its a goood thing that the moratorium happened, cause by the way things looked, at the end of VDT they were going to start filming MN/SC immediatley after, and Apted would be taking over again. With the moratorium in place, they have time to reevaluate things here. I just hope they don't rewrite SC and MN, and turn it into a totally different story.

  38. Aslan's BFF says:

    Ooo. Good point.

I wonder if the snake will look anything like the serpent in VDT. I named the serpent Theophilous (which really means lover of God) because it's "the-awful-est" thing I ever saw.

  39. SavedByGrace says:

makes me wonder if Eustace and Jill would have had to make a sea voyage…

  40. Aslan's #1 fan says:

    That's so…so…so EPIC.
I'm trying not to be emotional, they better start something, either keep making movies or remake and keep going; either way they need to hurry up.
Sniff…sniff…SC is one of my top fav's in Narnia.

  41. Aslan's #1 fan says:

Has anyone heard anything about more movies (remakes, sequels) I don't care. I just want NEWS. Does anyone know anything???

  42. Aslan's #1 fan says:

    Agreed Violamom. Its amazing.

  43. Hey Pepper! 😀
Yeah that would have ruined the movie even more 😛 But I guess that's where they got the green mist idea????

  44. narnian resident says:

Hint! HINT!!!!!!! oh please, movie making people, let this be a sign!!! Silver Chair is beckoning to you to be made! Please oh please oh please! Do it For Narnia, come on!

  45. Braden Woodburn says:

That looks incredible.. imagine seeing this scene on the big screen. It's weird looking at the Lady being in the form of The Witch Witch.. irritating at the same time because people compare her and the Lady as the same person… totally 2 different people. Still, I wish another film was underway already, upsetting that we are just clueless at the moment. 🙁

  46. Reepicheeps Archer:) says:

Its a BEAUTIFUL throne room! It kind of has this air of mystery and wonder but at the same time you definitely know something evil lives there…Does anyone know if they are going yo make the Silver Chair?..I really hope they do but it will be really sad for me though because to me its just not Narnia Without The Pevensies I loved the movies sooo much when they were in them…They just MAKE NARNIA SOMEHOW!

  47. Dylan says:

    Hmmm.. I wonder the same.

  48. Dylan says:

Thus explainging the coral and nautical look of her lair. I really think it is quite beautiful, and would have been interesting to see this conection between the green mist and the green lady.

  49. I agree with what Pepper Darcy said above. I was dying and still am dying to see a movie for The Silver Chair. VDT wasn't good, and even people who like it can say it wasn't successful. But I just wish it can still be possible for us to have an SC movie. It is by far my favorite out of all of them.

  50. Avra says:

I know …but there's still a chance.I've been waiting to type in narniaweb.com and instead of it proclaiming on the tab "Your source for voyage of the Dawn Treader Narnia movie news" it will say "Your source for the Silver Chair Narnia Movie News". I think I'll scream…out loud if(or WHEN) that happens.

  51. Anhun says:

I think SC would have been naturally better than VDT just because, as a story, it's so much better suited to the feature film format.

  52. DaughterofAslan'sCountry says:

The picture looks nice, but it looks like something from the Little Mermaid, literally. I wouldn't like this in the Silver Chair or VDT. It doesn't look Narniaish at all!

  53. DaughterofAslan'sCountry says:

P.S. What's the point of making a movie into the book if the people making the movie don't want to follow half the book. Don't make what's called a "Narnia" movie then. Make a movie and say it's based off of Narnia.

  54. Brandon says:

It IS a nice piece of Artwork but I would imagined the lair as something Dark and Cavelike. After all is under the earth where there is no sunlight Hello!

  55. Anhun says:

In this version, it's supposed to be under the sea. They were going to turn the Green Lady into a White Witch/Ursula hybrid.

  56. Dylan says:

Right,in the leaked script for Voyage, they had her ruling under the sea.

  57. coracle says:

If anyone hears anything, we expect it to be reported here pronto! We are the Narnia Movie news site!
(hint to anyone who hears or reads anything: please do a news report)
